Using contrast as a shade

Making slow progress on my new army but I quite like the results from using Blood Angels contrast to shade over the bold pyrrole red basecoat. Initially I did want quite a bright red armour, but it looked much too cartoony so I wanted to darken it a bit. Did consider carroburg crimson but past experience had it pooling too much and resulting in the coffee staining, so tried the blood angels contrast instead. A small amount of staining still, but seems to result in a really nice, rich deep red that I'm fairly happy with. So finally done with the armour, just need to get started on everything else now. Anyone else use the contrast paint for shading rather than just the basecoat?

edit: first few pics is before and after shading.

WIP Joining the Angels in time for Armaggeddon

Figure with the new edition, might as well start a new army. Had some leftover Leviathan Terminators, a very old Dark Imperium Intercessor squad thats been tucked away for god knows how long, a few kitbashed characters and the free scout model from mini of the month a while back to use up. Plus I've been needing a palette cleanse from my usual Imperial Fists. Challenging myself to finish them all in time for Armaggeddon and adding that box set to this little company. Must say, red is a very satisfying colour to work with. For the Angel!

Messing around with weathering during the yellow process to see what kind of effects I can get. Fairly happy with the result. I've used similar methods in the past for the yellow but havent tried sponging dirt effects or recess shading prior to finishing the coat.

Pic 1 and 2 is finished yellow coat.

Pic 3 is prior to the final coat of Imperial Fists contrast, after sponging goregrunta fur with a recess shade and drybrushing bold titanium white.

Pic 4 is a vindicator after its first coat of Imperial Fists contrast so you can see the difference before and after the full process.

Pic 5 is a different vindicator after a full coat of Imperial Fists contrast on top of a full coat of watered down goregrunta and a white drybrush. No sponging or recess shading.

Pic 6 is my favourite Imperial Fists artwork, which is the kind of gritty bright yellow I've always tried to emulate.

I really like both finishes so will do a mix with across the rest of my vehicles. Further weathering will follow, more shading, grime, chipping, mud etc, but that's end stage stuff.

My yellow is pretty much the u/darcybono method, but for a much lazier painter. I've tried a lot of yellows to get the result I like but hers has been the best so far by quite a margin.
