IIT Madras BS Data Science - Qualifier Reattempt Today (Aug 16): What happens if I fail?

I'm currently in the May 2026 term of the IIT Madras Online BS in Data Science program. Today (August 16, 2026) is my final reattempt for the Qualifier Exam.

The official mail says if I fail, I'll have to "reapply in the next term" with full program fee and restart from Week 1.

My question:

Does "next term" mean September 2026 or January 2027?

Can I join September 2026 if I fail the Qualifier today, or do I have to wait until January 2027?

Also clarifying:

I understand that even if I pass the Qualifier today, I'll still have to redo Quiz-1, Quiz-2, and assignments for Weeks 1-4 when I join the September term

So passing vs failing today determines whether I start these redos in September 2026 or January 2027, right?

Confusion about reattempt timeline - Will I be wasting 6 weeks?

Background:

I'm a student in IIT Madras BS Data Science program (May 2026 batch intake). I failed my qualifier exam on July 19, 2026 in 3 out of 4 subjects. I'm retaking on August 16, 2026.

My Understanding:

August 16: I take reattempt exam (on Week 1-4 content) = This counts as Quiz 1

August 17 - October 1: 6-week gap

October 2: Sep 2026 batch officially starts Week 1

My Confusion:

If my Aug 16 reattempt = Quiz 1, then logically I should already have completed Week 1-4. So from August 17 onwards, shouldn't I be studying Week 5-12 content?

The Problem:

Sep 2026 official start is October 2 (Week 1)

If they make me restart from Week 1 in October, I'll be repeating Week 1-4 content twice

This seems like a waste of 6 weeks

My Questions:

Will I be placed in Sep 2026 batch officially after passing Aug 16?

What should I do between August 17 and October 2 (6-week gap)?

Should I study Week 5-12 content on my own during this gap?

Will my Quiz 2 and Final Exam follow the normal 4-week pattern (Sep 13 and Oct 11)?

Or will I have to wait until October 2 to officially start with the Sep batch?

Hey guys, I failed the qualifier on July 19 and I'm retaking it on August 16.

Hey guys, I failed the qualifier on July 19 and I'm retaking it on August 16.

If I pass, I'm confused about a few things:

1. Does my Aug 16 reattempt count as Quiz 1 or Quiz 2 in my final grades?

The grading formula uses Qz1 and Qz2. Since I failed/didn't count on July 19, does Aug 16 become my new Quiz 1? Or does it still count as Quiz 2 since that's the official date?

2. When does my Week 5 start?

The May batch (who passed July 19) already started Week 5 in late July. Do I start Week 5 immediately after Aug 16? Or do I have to wait until October?

3. When is my final exam?

May batch has final exam on Sep 13. Will I also take it then? Or is mine different?

4. Am I registered for May 2026 or Sep 2026 batch?

The email says I can "start from week 6-7" but also mentions "Sep 2026". Does this mean I join May batch late? Or wait for Sep batch?

5. How far behind will I be?

If Week 5 starts late August for me, I'm basically on pace with May batch (maybe 2-3 weeks behind). But if it starts October, I'm 6+ weeks behind. That's a big difference.

Has anyone reattempted before? When did your Week 5 actually start after you passed the reattempt? And were you registered as May or Sep batch?

Would really help to know the actual timeline.

" Family issue - can't attempt IITM BS Qualifier Exam on July 19.

Due to a family problem, I won't be able to attempt my Qualifier Exam on July 19. Will I still get a second attempt chance in August? Is there any condition attached to it (like do I need to fullfill some criteria , or does missing the first attempt automatically make me eligible for the reattempt)? Anyone who's faced a similar situation, please help.

"Qualifier Exam Hall Ticket Confusion - Submit Button at 3:30 PM but Exam Duration is 4 Hours?"

Hey everyone, I got my hall ticket for the July 19 Qualifier Exam and I'm confused about the timing. It shows Exam Duration as 4 hours (2:00 PM - 6:00 PM), but there's also a "Submit Button" time listed as 3:30 PM. Does this mean I only have 1.5 hours to solve all 4 subjects (Math, Stats, CT, English)? Also, if I finish early and submit before the deadline, am I allowed to leave the centre immediately, or do I have to sit there till 6:00 PM regardless? The hall ticket doesn't clarify either point. Has anyone who's given this exam before know how it actually works? Would really appreciate some clarity before exam day. Thanks!

Is there still a minimum score requirement to register for more courses?

I'm currently in the Qualifier phase of the IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications program, and I have a question about course registration.

According to the official website, you need to meet certain minimum score requirements to register for a specific number of courses (for example, an average score above 75 to be eligible for 4 courses).

However, during one of the introductory/orientation sessions, I remember the instructor saying that this rule is no longer applicable and that students can choose any number of courses they want, regardless of their scores.

Can someone clarify which information is correct? Is the score-based course limit still in effect, or can we now register for any number of courses as long as we meet the other eligibility requirements?
