Prospective PhD student: Is the UNR stipend actually livable?

Hey everyone...I’m looking into the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) PhD program at UNR and trying to figure out the actual financials. I’m trying to see if it’s realistic to live on the stipend or not.

From what I know, the base stipend is around $2,200/month. On paper it includes a tuition waiver and health insurance. But, it seems like the mandatory fees and engineering differential fees add up fast.

I have a few specific questions for current CSE grads or GAs or TAs at UNR:

  1. Is the $375/month payment plan real? I heard that after the tuition waiver, engineering students still owe roughly $1,300 to $1,500 per semester out-of-pocket because of the $100/credit Engineering Differential Fee and campus mandatory fees.

  2. Is it true that you have to pay around $375 a month back to the school on a payment plan?

  3. What is your actual monthly take-home pay? After federal taxes and paying back those semester fees, what do you realistically have left in your pocket each month to live on?

  4. Are you able to save any money monthly? Or are you just living paycheck to paycheck?

  5. How bad is the rent situation? Can you afford to live alone, or is having multiple roommates a strict requirement to survive on this stipend in Reno?

How to justify my break in resume?

I applied to several colleges in the US for direct PhD programs, but unfortunately received rejections. Now my situation is this:

My bachelor’s degree will be completed in June 2026, and I am planning to apply again for the 2027 intake in both the US and Germany (mainly for research-oriented master’s programs in germany).

Until then, I am confused about how to justify or utilize the gap period until around March 2027.

  1. Should I take up a software job?

  2. Should I pursue a research internship under a professor at my college?

I also have one concern: if I choose a software job, will that negatively affect my profile for future PhD admissions?

I really need some advice and guidance.

I applied to 9 PhD programs in Biomedical Engineering, and I’ve already received 8 rejections. I come from a Computer Science background and applied straight out of my bachelor’s.

My profile:

- CGPA: 3.4 / 4.0

- 2 research internships (one at a top-tier government college in India)

- 2 conference presentations as first author

- 1 journal publication (second author)

- 2 book chapters (second author)

- 1 patent

- 1 government grant

One big mistake I realize now is that I didn’t contact any professors before submitting my applications.

I chose Biomedical Engineering because all my publications and research interests are in this field specifically biomedical data science.

Now I’m confused about what to do next. Should I apply again for Spring 2027 or wait for Fall 2027 (this time contacting professors in advance)?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice on how to improve my chances.

Thanks in advance.
