MY Bilateral Salpingectomy Timeline

For those looking at bilateral salpingectomy as a childfree option, here’s my full timeline of getting info about the surgery to the post op as a 24 year old in a Red State! I had my bi salp done under 5 days ago:

  • August 2025 went to my first drs appointment as an adult
  • September 2025 went to a woman’s healthcare facility for my yearly checkup. they told me they would NOT approve any form or sterilization under 30
  • October 2025 went to a consultation at a clinic that is 100% for womens rights and they told me at the first encounter they would do a bi salp, hysterectomy, etc if a patient wants. no questions asked. no age restrictions. (Advanced Gynecology of Tampa Bay, Dr Michael Stine)
  • Novemeber 2025 ultrasound appointment. Dr agreed to sign off on the bi salp or schedule a biopsy for a hysterectomy at that appointment. I told my parents the plan, they disapproved (as I was under their insurance) so I held off.
  • July 2026 I make the decision for myself, I want the bi salp and I schedule a phone consultation for schedule a pre-op.
  • August 6 2026 pre op date. 15 minute appointment to go over medications, procedure, surgery, hospital etc
  • August 14 2026 surgery day!!
  • August 18 2026 (today) mostly back to normal. no pain.

IMO this was a VERY quick process. I could’ve gotten it done within a few months if I had kept with the plan in 2025. Luckily I didn’t have to repeat any of the process in 2026, but please check back to see my full recovery timeline!!

Bilateral salpingectomy done & I wanna cry

I just had my bi salp but I’m very confused and almost doubtful.

I went in today at 9am. as my first surgery ever, I had NO idea what to expect, from the IV to anesthetics to the process itself. I was calm, but anxious. I had two tries on my IV and it was the most painful sting ever. I almost thought because of that needle, there would be no way Id get thru surgery & recovery.

I didn’t get rolled out to surgery until around noon so I was fighting to keep calm with both IV punctures for hours. I can hardly remember due to the anesthesia but the nurses were nice & genuine. I was already so tired from waiting in the bed, I didn’t know whether I fell asleep because of that or the anesthesia. Next thing I know I was opening my eyes (Or trying to)

But this is what shocked me the most… i have 0 pain. ZERO. I woke up on my side, hardly able to feel the incisions. The only sting I had was from the IV. No gas, no aching, no nothing. I was mostly scared that they didn’t do the procedure at all. From what I’ve heard from others experience, there was a bit of acute pain but I feel exactly the same as when I walked into the surgery center.

I cried because I was so confused. I trust the doctors but I feel like nothing happpened. Did I get my tubes removed? Is there a way to be sure?

Can I get a bi salp & an ablation??

I scheduled my bi salp for two weeks from now (YIPPEE!) I’m considering also getting an ablation. Is it okay if I bring it up at the post op a week before the procedure so they can do it at the same time as the sterilization or would this be a completely separate procedure?

second question: has anyone had no success after ablation? I’ve heard sometimes it doesn’t work. Don’t want it to be a waste of time & money but I would like a chance of extra peace.

I’m scared insurance won’t pay for my bi salp 😟

according to my florida blue marketplace insurance, they’re only forced to accept a single contraception of each type. in the sterilization category, theyve done the minimum. theyll only pay for a tubal ligation (why 😭)

im scared now bc i want to have my tubes removed, not just tied. its preventative & also safer. there’s been no births whereas i even personally know a woman in her 40s who had a child after surgery.

but if my insurance refuses to pay, i don’t know what im going to do. when i asked my dr, she assured me they could code it so that i wouldn’t have to pay. not to say i don’t trust my drs, but what happens if they code it as a bi salp and i have to pay bc my insurance only covers the tubal ligation? does anyone have this experience? Im clueless about insurance as a whole & i def don’t know enough to be able to fight this with them after the fact.

Is Molina insurance really that bad??

I (f24) want / need to get an ACA insurance for sterilization purposes. I went to Molina first because it's least expensive. I dont currently have health insurance so I'd want to pay as little as possible just to cover this procedure. I used Molina's online chat and called to speak with a live person to ensure that under ACA guidelines the procedure would be 100% covered. Both told me the same story, they had to cover it due to regulations.

I did a quick reddit check & it looks like with Molina, you pay for the poor service. Although I am now on the fence, it's the only inexpensive insurance out there that my gyno takes. I will also add, after procedure & recovery, I plan to cancel & get a more reliable insurance with my husband.

I'm mainly concerned whether it'd be best to go with Molina as a short term cost effective option for a month or two or if it's best and safest to take the more expensive route.

i'm a bit concerned

I need to hear your experiences after having a bilateral salpingectomy / tubal ligation. I (f24) have never had surgery before but I plan to get sterilized. I'm worried about the recovery & pain most, but it's easiest to process when I have something to compare it to.

For those who have had this surgery, other surgeries, periods, pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, c section, etc, I'd love to hear how ur sterilization compares to any or all of these procedures & experiences. Feel free to just rate ur pain from 1-10!

I’m 24 years old & have no idea how health insurance works…

I have no health insurance. Newly married. Wanting a bilateral salpingectomy & have heard it will cost over $15k out of pocket.

I’m looking at insurance plans, namely Obamacare thru healthcare.gov bc I heard ACA compliant insurances are forced to pay in full for bi salp sterilization. (If I’m wrong about any of this lmk I have no clue)

as an example, I’m looking at lowest premium plans ($480 monthly, $9000 deductible, $10,600 out of pocket maximum individual total). I assume this means, I pay monthly $480, if the bi salp costs over $9000 they will pay a portion, and the most I pay is $10,600?

please correct me if I’m wrong and tell me exactly what this means! I am getting insurance to pay for the bi salp. How difficult is it to cancel after recovery? I only want it to pay for the surgery & complications.
