Do you care if the associate is good because they’re proficient with AI and reviewing it? Do you care how the sausage is made? Or just that it’s delectable?

What's the difference between how you teach/critique "good" associates versus the not-so-good or hopeless ones? Fear of falling out of favor (i.e. not being perfect) with partner who has otherwise praised my work.

Today’s take: Lots of these people aren’t rude/malicious. They’re just nerds with poor communication skills and self awareness.

Drug Use in BigLaw: Are people getting high anymore?

Maybe it’s generational, but the idea that Big Law people are doing drugs, coke, getting wasted, seems outdated. Besides, 90% of attorneys are pretty square. Other than alcohol, cigarettes (vapes), and weed, is anyone doing drugs?

Do you ever tell folks junior to you “good job” when you don’t mean it?

As in, just being polite but the work is actually garbage? My self esteem is such that I don’t even trust positive feedback: either this person is just really nice or they’re consistently happy with my work.

Does anyone else re-read “nice job” emails to feel less like an idiot during the day?

I’ve read the same 10 word email probably 20 times today. Encouragement matters, folks.

What do you guys actually do when you're not working? Sleep? Doomscroll in bed? Play with your pets? Play video games? Crochet? Watch TV? When things are slow, how do you pass the time (assuming this job is a means to an end and not the end in and of itself)?

What's the most common mid-range luxury jewelry found at Big Law happy hours? I notice lots of men and women have some combo of Cartier Santos/panthere/tank watches, Rolex datejust/sub, Van Cleef bracelets/necklaces...and that's about it.

At what year are associates (Corp in particular) generally entrusted to run solo with client communications with minimal to no intervention? I have a good feel for a client, their tone, timings, etc. and have been running stuff with their team. Everyone's CCd but no one says anything. So I keep goin

What to make of this lateral offer: Class year market base salary + class year market full bonus = base salary in the offer letter. In other words, base offer looks 2-3 class years ahead because bonus built in to monthly salary. Thoughts?

Expensive, sure. But the classic European Louvre-church-French royalty aesthetic really does it for me, especially after moving away from Diptyque after the latest price rise and brand refresh (i.e. reformulation) nonsense. Trudon boutiques are also beautiful and quiet in person, and I'm sensitive to that sort of thing since the markup for all of these candles for me is justified by the buying experience. Bought the fancy gold candle stands and everything.
