Guanfacine

My 5 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with moderate to severe ADHD. It has been affecting her at school and at home, so we have decided to try medication.

We are starting with Guanfacine 1mg. I picked it up from the pharmacy today and found out it’s in pill form. She absolutely WILL NOT take it. She has always struggled with sensory problems with taking medicine, so we knew this would be an uphill battle. However we’ve been trying to convince her to take this for the entire day and I am beyond frustrated. Is there a different form that this med can come in besides pill form? If it was a liquid maybe we could at least hide it in her drink or something. Also any tricks to convince a very stubborn girl to take this medicine that could potentially help her so much?

Also would love to hear any success stories from Guanfacine! I was hesitant to start her so young, but her psychologist, OT, and teacher have highly recommended trying meds. And I do feel better starting her out on a non stimulant first.

New Diagnosis

My daughter who is newly 5 (by exactly one week) has just been diagnosed with moderate to severe ADHD. We have always know she likely has ADHD, as it’s pretty undeniable if you are around her for any length of time. She was given a diagnosis of ADHD at 3, but this was based only on a preschool teacher and myself filling out an evaluation form. However, recently, her Pre-K teacher as well as a social worker for the school have encouraged us to seek out a formal battery of testing as they though she might be on the Autism Spectrum, rather than ADHD. So we did this full testing about two weeks ago and got the results today.

The psychologist has said that she does not believe she has ASD, but instead moderate to severe ADHD that has been mimicking symptoms of ASD. That being said, she has encouraged medication for our daughter, along with several different therapies to compliment the medication.

My overall question being, is barely 5 too young to start medicating ADHD? Are there any success stories or cautionary tales?

I knew this day would come eventually, but I didn’t think it would come one week into Kindergarten. Ultimately, I want what is best for her. If medication can help, we will 100% do it. But if she is too young I would also be willing to consider any other options as well.

ADHD

Can ADHD go hand in hand with porn addiction? My husband was never officially diagnosed because his mom didn’t believe in that sort of thing, but I am 99.9% sure he has ADHD. We also have a 4 year old daughter that has been diagnosed as AuDHD and I know there’s a genetic component (that did not come from me). I think if he’s formally evaluated that he would, in fact, be diagnosed. Is there any hope in getting his ADHD diagnosed and under control, that he would be able to control, or at least manage, these addictive behaviors?

We are currently setting up marriage counseling, but I also think we will attend individual therapy sessions as well to address personal issues within the both of us.
