"Original Post:*

Reminder, the deadline for the lower rate is this Thursday. I'm going to try to get that extended.

Reminder 2, this trip is for known regulars.

If anyone has questions, feel free to message me. I just made a few new posts in the trip sub.

Puzzle Master

This is Bertie. He helps my sister with her crossword puzzles. She said the progress is slow and that sometimes she has to assemble sections more than once. She also told me that pieces occasionally disappear. 🤷

Does Gratitude Rewire Your Brain? - American Brain Foundation

The following is an exerpt from the brain foundation about the benefits of gratitude.

The Benefits of Gratitude

Ultimately gratitude is more complex than merely expressing courtesy or focusing on positive thinking. When you regularly focus or meditate on what you are thankful for, it causes effects that promote well-being, including psychological and physical health. Here are some remarkable benefits:

Gratitude helps you develop a more positive mindset.

Gratitude reduces stress.

Gratitude reduces anxiety.

Gratitude reduces depression.

Gratitude improves emotional resilience.

Gratitude improves focus.

Gratitude improves immunity.

Gratitude improves sleep.

Gratitude helps with social bonding.

Gratitude can improve general health concerns.

DO60, do you practice gratitude daily? If not, are you convinced to start now?

Which of the benefits are most important to you?

Colo Meetup Roll Call

Please go to the trip sub at the link below to let us know if you're going. Please.

[The trip sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/DO60\_Meetup\_2026/s/faEgA3wMF7)

The trip is restricted to those we already know well in the community.

Known members may bring someone they know well to assist them or a traveling buddy if safety is a concern or a significant other, if they have one.

Do not respond here about whether you are going or not.

If you don't respond, you risk being removed from the trip sub. If you don't know yet, that's fine to hang until you have a definite yes or no. We will eventually remove people from that sub who are not going.

Those who want to be included in future gatherings should participate in the sub.

Air Conditioning Appreciation Days

Did you know AC Appreciation Days runs from July 3 to August 15? I did not. The linked article tells the history of air-conditioning, including how people cooled prior to electricity and Mr. Carrier's invention.

Today we express our gratitude for air conditioning. I grew up without it in the Midwest, home of hot summers with high humidity made worse by corn sweat. Yes, I said corn sweat!

Aside: I had friends who earned money in the summer detassling corn! I couldn't take the heat. You had to wear long pants, long sleeves, and gloves to avoid corn cuts. It's hot, dusty, dirty, hard work.

So, wassup DO60?! What happened this week for which you are grateful? And, let's hear it for air conditioning!

New Sub: r/DatingOverSeventy

r/DatingOverSeventy is now open for those over 65.

It's separate from DO60, with a different mod team who have plans to create a community that addresses the wants and needs of those dating in the next decade. They plan to try some different things and to make it a unique space. (I decry the overuse of that word but I think it may fit here.)

When we started DO60, people asked why and if it was needed, since DO50 was already strong and growing. We've discovered that life changes with each successive decade. And we've noticed that each decade of the DO communities have taken on different, perhaps appropriate personalities. Some of that is shaped by the moderators but perhaps even more by the members.

While I do still spend some time in DO50, I now spend most of my time here in DO60.

Stop by and wish them luck.

Book Readers ~~Love~~ Live Longer

Autocorrect incorrection that seems to work.

A Yale study shows that regular readers live approximately 23 months longer than non-readers.

So, what are you reading?

And, does anyone have a desire to get a book club going? DO50 has a nice little one they run on another platform.

Follow-up To "Gratitude For Who You Are"

Here's last week's post:

Gratitude For Who You Are

This grew out of last week's post, but also out of a discussion with friends this morning.

Many of us have lived a life of putting everything else and everyone else first and then we get what's left -- which sometimes isn't much in the way of time or comfort, or even care.

There are times when that can't be avoided: during childrearing and career-building or business-building; during caregiving; I'm sure you can think of many more things and people you have put before youself.

Now, that many of us can shift focus a bit, caring for ourselves can actually feel a bit selfish or indulgent. Maybe we're taking on the responsibilities of others or for others who should be managing their own lives but we can't see a way out. (Ahem, Blitzen)

Let's encourage each other to take good care of ourselves so we can live our best lives in this third third of life. We need to take care of ourselves, and this time, we'll be able to give what's left to family and community.

🔊🔊 You're number one! 👏👏

#DO60, what good things have you done just for yourself this week?

Show Gratitude for Who You Are

"People will come and go in your life, but the person in the mirror will be there forever. Be good to that person. Love that person."

- did not find attribution

Ways to be good to yourself:

Speak kindly: Use soft and encouraging words inside your mind instead of harsh criticism.

Forgive mistakes: Let go of past errors because everyone learns by trying and failing.

Protect peace: Step away from spaces or choices that break your heart or drain your joy.

Rest well: Give your body and mind the quiet time they need to heal and grow.

DO60, How will you be good to yourself this week?

Water might mean a puddle, lake, stream, river, or ocean. Pond or creek, swamp, sea, lagoon, fjord, bog, fen, brook or bay. Or?

Please limit to four (4).

Please provide links, if possible. If you need a little help with that, someone will be along.

Gratitude for Variety in People and Experiences

I came up empty when I searched for articles about gratitude for variety. None with depth. Nothing pithy. Just nothing.

I'd thought about the word diversity. I looked and the articles were mostly about diversity in the workplace. Diversity, as we currently use the word is not what I'm thinking of.

Yes, I'm thinking about people of different races but also people from different regions, different countries, different cultures. Even people in my neighborhood and town who have had experiences different from mine. Interaction with them just about always leaves me changed.

They know things I don't. They've seen and experienced things I have not. As a result, we observe the same things through different eyes. We see something different while looking at the same object or circumstance. It's all so thrilling to me!

That's one reason I like this community, especially when people are accepting of these differences in experience and perspective. When curiosity replaces the type of judgement that has hints of condemnation.

And that takes me to experiences. I love that there are so many things I've yet to experience. Even being made aware of those things is a gift. I've met a lot of different types of people and had a variety of experiences and I'm excited for the new discoveries I've yet to make. New people, places, and things!

Wheeeee!

So, DO60, does this have any meaning for you? If so, or if not, what/why? If yes, how have new experiences or new people changed you?

We Need Mods

We’re looking for a few more people to round out our mod team. We need people who are interested in helping shape the future of DO60 and keep it a close and welcoming community as we grow.

WHAT IS NEEDED TO BE A MOD?
The most important things are to know and understand the rules (and the whys) of the sub and Reddit's content policy; have a positive attitude and not take conflict with members personally; remain impartial regardless of your personal beliefs; be fair and consistent. Oh, and be over 50.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

Our community objective is to foster a safe and welcoming environment for people over 50, of different backgrounds, from different parts of the U.S.A., from different countries and from different cultures. We welcome people who define relationships in traditional and non-traditional ways.

Our moderators strive to be neutral and not enforce their personal beliefs or values on others, though we may voice our individual preferences in ways that do not diminish those of others when we are participating in discussions as members and not as moderators.

Our members should expect to participate freely, without being verbally attacked or insulted when expressing  controversial or unpopular opinions that don't violate the rules of Reddit or the values or rules of our community. Members who are new to the sub and are trying to figure out how things work after being married or in a relationship for many years should expect patience and guidance.

Discussing opinions is fine; debating to win is not.  Hostility toward other users and personal attacks are not tolerated. It's a balance between letting individuals speak their opinions in their own voice, and maintaining a positive discussion where some topics are sensitive and, at times, users are overly passionate or have opinions that are not broadly shared.

Mods are expected to interact with members in a respectful and positive manner in comments and in modmail. Communicate why a comment/post was removed or the user banned - without emotion or snark, even when they use it. When a user is insulting or aggressive, that can be a challenge.

Moderation is an unpaid, volunteer position.

HOW TO APPLY

You are welcome to ask questions in the comments below, or you can send any questions through modmail. (click on sub name >click on "see more" >scroll down until you be mod names > click "Message the Mods")

If you're ready to apply, please message the mods through modmail. Include:

  1. Why do you wish to mod DO60?
  2. Do you have any previous mod/admin experience? (helpful but not required)
  3. TIME ZONE?
  4. When in your day you are most likely to be modding. Example: I usually check Reddit most mornings between 8 - 9 am, occasionally while dinner is cooking around 5 or 6 pm, and before bed sometime between 8 and 10 pm.
  5. ENGLISH: Describe your fluency in English. Examples: I'm in the US and a native speaker. I'm in Denmark, but have strong written and moderate spoken English.

Please do not send any mods a direct chat. Use modmail instead.

Thank you! PlasticBlitzen, Gooseberry_Sprig, Bao_Xinhua
