Y-DNA and mtDNA frequency of Bunt, Kodava, Kapla, and Nair populations

mtDNA Overall: M=84, U=36, R=23, HV=11, A=1, J=1

Haplogroup M is overwhelmingly dominant (54%), consistent with deep South Asian ancestry. U is the second most common (23%), reflecting West Eurasian/ancient ancestral components. HV appears mainly in Kodava and Kodava_US. Rare haplogroups A and J each appear once, both in the Kodava_US diaspora sample.

Y-DNA Overall: R=42, H=22, L=13, J=9, Q=9, N=1, E=1, G=1

R1a sub-clades dominate (43%), with R-Y7, R-Y6, R-Z2123, R-Z94, and R-L657 being the most represented. Haplogroup H (especially H1a1d2 sub-clades) is the second most common at 22%, a characteristically South Asian lineage. L (mainly L1a1) makes up 13%. J appears notably in Kodava/Kodava_US samples (J2a1 and J2b). Q shows up across populations, particularly in Nair. Rare lineages E and G each appear once, both in Nair.

A recent Y-DNA study on Gujarat Kolis (N=153) showed significant paternal diversity. The most common haplogroup was R1a at 45.1%, followed by H1, L, and R2 (N = 153).

The Koli community is one of the largest and most historically widespread communities of Gujarat, traditionally associated with agriculture, fishing, local warrior groups, and village based occupations. Different Koli groups are spread across various regions of Gujarat, mostly found in coastal regions along with the south Gujarat bordering Maharashtra. The name 'Koli' may be derived from Koli named king, or Kol (boat) or Kul dynasty or the ancient Kol state situated south of the Vindhyanchal mountains. 153 years ago, as per the first census of Gujarat of 1872 AD, the population of Koli in Gujarat was 965000 out of Gujarat's total population of 9129722. Kolis are known as Koli, Kharava, Khant, Koli Patel, Koli Thakor, Machhi, Tandel in Gujarat.
