To work or not to work?

When Hubby and I got married, he told me he would prefer if I stayed home and let him provide for us, although he would understand if I wanted to work, and it was my choice. I tried the SAHM thing, but it drove me nuts, so after a few years I found a job I loved. I worked full time for about 20 years, then Hubby was diagnosed with vascular dementia and the neurologist was worried about his safety being home alone all day. We went through the intake process to get a home health aide for him, but the first time the aide showed up at the door Hubby, who is very introverted, threw him out. Getting another home health aide was out of the question so I left my job and found a part time one where I only work about four hours a day, three or four times a week.

The job is a back office job and is pretty mundane, but I like my coworkers, and it gets me out of the house and makes me feel useful. I make sure Hubby is up and has breakfast and morning meds before I leave, and he makes his own lunch when I am gone. I make dinner and give him his evening meds when I get home. This has worked well for awhile, but his dementia is progressing. Now when I come home, I often find scorched food left in the pots from when he made lunch, spills on the counter and floor, and dirty dishes all over the house. He is not a wanderer, so I am not worried about him leaving the house and getting lost, and he is not a fall risk, although he is moving around a lot slower.

I am feeling pretty stressed right now because on the one hand, I feel like hubby needs me at home, but on the other hand I need to be around other people and feel productive and useful. He needs me to quit my job, but working outside of the house is better for my mental health. Financially we'd be OK if I stopped working, as Hubby's retirement and SSA cover the bills. (I'd have to cut way down on my Amazon purchases, though. 😄)

Is it selfish to want to keep working? What other options do I have, though?

I am trying to be a positive person, but. . .

This Spring has not been easy. It has been one thing after another and I am having a hard time staying in the now. This is going to be mostly a vent, but if any of you have any suggestions, or stories that can make us all smile, please share them.

Because of Hubby's vascular dementia, he cannot travel. He doesn't do well in new places, or with big crowds, and he cannot sit in one place very long, so flights and road trips are both out of the question. We live in a rural town and all of my family lives three states away. I cannot go see them because Hubby can't be left alone for more than a few hours at a time, he refuses to let anybody else come over to help him, and taking him with me is not an option. I do work part time (maybe 15 hours a week), and can get him to go to the grocery store or out to dinner sometimes if it is a restaurant he is familiar with, so I am not completely homebound with him, but have not traveled farther than the nearest big city for a Costco trip in several years.

In March, my father passed away. I could not attend his funeral. My family was disappointed but understanding and tried to set up a Zoom from the church, but the connection was fuzzy. In April, I had a routine mammogram and they found a mass. It turned out to be a lymph node, nothing to worry about, although now they want me to get annual mammograms instead of every other year. May didn't have any major events, but Hubby did have a week where he was not feeling well, and I had a lot of poop to clean up. (Many thanks, by the way, to the person who suggested shaving cream for cleaning up--it works really well!)

Which brings us to June. June started out well, Hubby was feeling better and my colonoscopy showed only a few polyps. I was starting to think that things were going to be better for awhile. Then my sister called me. She has been having small memory issues, and had been seeing a neurologist for evaluation. This week she got the results--she has Lewy Body Dementia. We were on the phone for awhile talking about her treatment plan and the lifestyle changes she was going to be making. After we got off the phone, I went into my room and cried.

I am scared of what July is going to bring.
