Problems with the Book of Abraham

I’ve never understood how Mormons can read the Book of Abraham and simply accept the idea that God told Abraham He lives on another planet orbiting a star called Kolob, which supposedly has a governing relationship to the other stars and worlds in the universe.

That is such a massive departure from the way Abraham and the ancient Israelites actually understood the cosmos.

The ancient Israelites didn’t have physics, astronomy, geometry, or any of the scientific framework we have today to understand the universe. Their worldview was fundamentally different. They generally understood the Earth as a flat, stationary place supported by pillars, with a solid dome (the “firmament”) overhead separating the Earth from the cosmic waters above. The sun and moon were not understood as distant celestial bodies like we understand them today. They were essentially the two great lamps placed in the firmament to govern the day, night, seasons, and appointed times.

The stars were part of the “heavenly host,” and planets were essentially understood as wandering stars. The Earth was the center of the physical and spiritual world, sitting beneath God’s heavenly realm. Heaven was not some distant galaxy millions of light-years away. It was literally understood as the realm beyond the firmament.

That was their entire reference point for understanding the cosmos.

They had no concept of the Earth as a sphere orbiting the Sun, the Moon as a satellite orbiting the Earth, or the Sun as one star among billions. They certainly had no concept of gravity, planetary motion, nuclear fusion, the physical composition of stars, or the enormous scale of the universe.

The Book of Abraham asks us to believe that Abraham looks through an ancient instrument (the Urim and Thummim) and receives an explanation of the universe that is radically different from the cosmology surrounding him. Instead of the Earth being the physical center beneath a nearby heavenly dome, Abraham is supposedly shown a vast cosmic hierarchy centered around a star called Kolob.

Kolob is presented as being so close to the throne of God that it becomes, in effect, the closest thing to a literal cosmic center of God’s presence. The Book of Abraham describes governing stars, planets, times, and relationships between celestial bodies in a way that sounds much more like a later cosmological framework than anything resembling the ancient Israelite worldview.

How was Abraham supposed to understand any of this, and what reference point did he have? How could he suddenly comprehend a completely different model involving governing stars, planetary relationships, celestial time, and a cosmic hierarchy?

It would be like trying to explain nuclear physics to someone who has never even conceived of an atom. You could give them the words, but the words wouldn't give them the underlying concepts. Abraham would have had no reference point for what he was supposedly seeing. Charlie Brown's teacher explaining it to him (“Wah Wah Wah”) would be about as meaningful. He wouldn't even have had the mental framework to process it; it is so radically different!

If God miracously gave Abraham this revolutionary understanding of the cosmos, where did it go?

Why didn't this knowledge transform the ancient Israelite understanding of the universe?

Look at the story of Joshua stopping the sun. The sun is described as standing still in the sky. The imagery fits perfectly within the ancient conception of the sun moving across the heavens as a lamp. If Abraham had already been taught that the universe was structured around Kolob, that celestial bodies existed in a hierarchy, and that there was an entirely different understanding of planetary motion and celestial time, why doesn't any of that knowledge appear to have survived in ancient Israelite literature?

Why does the ancient worldview continue to look exactly like the worldview we would expect from the ancient Near East?

Where is the influence of Abraham's supposed cosmic revelation?

Why did nobody else seem to know about it?

And then, thousands of years later, the Book of Abraham appears with a cosmology that sounds completely foreign to the worldview that Abraham lived in.

The problem isn't simply that ancient people didn't understand modern astronomy. Of course they didn't. The problem is that the Book of Abraham asks to believe that Abraham somehow received and understood concepts that were completely outside his cultural, scientific, and conceptual framework and then somehow none of that knowledge meaningfully entered the Israelite tradition.

Galileo and others eventually dismantle the old Earth-centered model in the 17th century, and astronomy eventually revealed a universe governed by physical laws, gravity, planetary motion, and enormous distances. The sun became a star, planets became physical worlds orbiting stars, and the Earth became one planet among many rather than the literal center of creation.

The scientific revolution fundamentally dismantled the mythological architecture through which ancient people understood the heavens. The universe went from being a human-centered spiritual theater beneath a heavenly dome to an enormous physical system governed by mathematical laws.

And yet the Book of Abraham presents itself as an ancient revelation to Abraham, but its description of the cosmos doesn't fit comfortably within the cosmology of the ancient Israelites surrounding him.

So, If God really showed Abraham a radically different understanding of the universe, why does Abraham's world show virtually no evidence that he had the conceptual framework to understand it? Why does the ancient Israelite tradition show virtually no evidence that this knowledge was ever passed down?

Abraham was missing the entire language necessary to understand what he was supposedly being shown!

Priesthood and the Universe

I'm wondering if you agree or disagree with the doctrine of the priesthood and the universe as i understand it.

Power of the Universe

The priesthood is eternal, the power and law that organizes and governs the universe. The priesthood, universe, matter, time, and spirit matter have always existed with no beginning and cannot be destroyed.Every conscious being; gods, God the Father, Jesus, and all who have lived had a beginning. They were organized by the priesthood and must follow the universe’s rules. These beings differ from the eternal priesthood, universe, matter, time, and spirit matter.

Element (Matter)

The physical universe’s building blocks are eternal. God did not create from nothing; He organized pre-existing matter into the Earth and cosmos. Matter can be reshaped but never destroyed. Mormon scripture: “The elements are eternal.”

Intelligence

Before becoming spirit children, the core of who we are existed as uncreated “intelligence” a mind and agency that has always had its own identity. Mormon Scripture: “Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be".

Spirit Matter

Spirit is real, finer matter, invisible to mortal eyes. As matter, its substance has always existed before organization. Mormon scripture: “All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure.”

Eternal Laws and Truth

Fixed spiritual and physical laws govern the universe; even God follows them. Truth is independent and can act or be acted upon. Cause-effect, justice, and mercy have always existed. Mormon scripture: “All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself.”

The Priesthood

In LDS teaching, the priesthood is God’s uncreated eternal power and authority. It organizes chaotic eternal matter and intelligence into worlds. It has no beginning or end and upholds physical and spiritual laws across the universe.

The Eternal System

Intelligence chooses progression; element and spirit matter supply materials; the priesthood is the power, authority, and law that organizes them into stars, planets, bodies, and resurrected beings.God did not create from nothing. He used the priesthood to organize existing matter. Under the Father, Jesus employed the Melchizedek Priesthood to form worlds without number. Unlike temporary earthly authority, this power is eternal and existed before the physical earth (e.g., keys held by Adam). Its purpose is progression “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” Through temple ordinances and the New and Everlasting Covenant, the faithful may inherit “all that the Father hath,” including priesthood power to organize matter and create in future worlds. On earth, God delegates a portion to worthy men: the Melchizedek Priesthood (higher, keys to spiritual blessings and mysteries) and the Aaronic Priesthood (preparatory, keys to the ministering of angels and outward ordinances).

Does this fit the biblical explanation of God, the universe, time, and creation? If so, explain how? If not, why is it different?

Just curious about Priesthood and the Universe

I'm just curious if everyone here believes that the priesthood, unlike earthly authority which is bound by time and geography, is an everlasting principle that has always existed. The Priesthood is the eternal power & Law that organizes and governs the the universe . The Priesthood, the universe, matter, time, or spirit matter have always existed with no beginning and will never be destroyed.

Every conscience being inside the universe such as gods, God the Father, Jesus, and anyone who ever lived in the universe, including the earth, had a beginning, was "organized" by the Priesthood, and is bound by governing rules of the universe. Gods and conscience beings are unlike the priesthood, universe, matter, time, or spirit matter which have always existed and always will.

  1. Element (Matter)

The fundamental building blocks of the physical universe are eternal.

  • No creation from nothing: God organized existing chaotic matter to form the Earth and the universe.
  • Indestructible: Matter can be reshaped, refined, or transformed, but it cannot be annihilated.
  • Scriptural foundation: "The elements are eternal"
  1. Intelligence (The Core of Consciousness)

Before humans were born as spirit children to Heavenly Parents, the absolute core of human identity existed as "intelligence."

  • Uncreated self: This raw essence of consciousness, mind, and agency was not created by God.
  • Co-eternal with God: It has always possessed individual identity and the capacity to choose.
  • Scriptural foundation: "Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be"
  1. Spirit Matter

Spirit is not an abstract, non-physical concept. It is a tangible, refined substance.

  • Refined matter: Spirit is simply matter that is more fine, pure, and invisible to mortal eyes.
  • Eternal substance: Because it is a form of matter, the substance that makes up spirit bodies has always existed in some form before being organized.
  • Scriptural foundation: "All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure"
  1. Eternal Laws and Truth

The universe operates on absolute, fixed spiritual and physical laws that God Himself abides by (God is bound by these and does not have the authority or power to change it).

  • Independent truth: Truth exists independently in its own sphere to act or be acted upon.
  • The basis of justice: Laws governing cause, effect, justice, and mercy are co-eternal with the cosmos.
  • Scriptural foundation: "All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself"

Summary of the Relationship

Principle Cosmic Application
Origin Co-eternal with God; has no beginning or end.
Function The mechanism used to organize matter, create planets, and direct physical laws.
Scope Governs endless creations and millions of worlds.
Ultimate Goal Elevating humans to become like God, allowing them to wield this same universal power eternally.
  1. The Priesthood (The Power of Creation)

In LDS theology, the Priesthood is not just an earthly office; it is the eternal, uncreated power and authority of God. It serves as the active mechanism that governs and manipulates all other eternal elements.

  • The Organizing Force: While matter and intelligence have always existed, they exist in a state of chaos until acted upon. The Priesthood is the law and power used to organize chaotic matter into ordered worlds.
  • Without Beginning or End: Priesthood authority is co-eternal with God. It did not start with the creation of this Earth or any previous world.
  • Governing Agent of Law: It is the supreme governing power by which physical and spiritual laws are maintained throughout the universe.

The Complete Eternal Ecosystem

With the addition of the Priesthood, LDS cosmology forms a complete eternal ecosystem of existence:

[ THE PRIESTHOOD ] <-- The Eternal Power & Law
            │
            ▼ Actively Organizes & Governs
  ┌─────────────────┼─────────────────┐
  ▼ ▼ ▼
[INTELLIGENCE] [ELEMENTS / MATTER] [SPIRIT MATTER]
(Raw Mind) (Physical Building) (Refined Substance)
  • Intelligence provides the conscious identity that chooses to progress.
  • Element & Spirit Matter provide the tangible materials used to build creations.
  • The Priesthood provides the ultimate power, authority, and law required to fuse them together into stars, planets, spirit bodies, and resurrected beings.
  1. The Power of Creation and Cosmic Order

God did not create the universe out of nothing (ex nihilo). Instead, He used the priesthood to organize eternal, pre-existing matter.

  • Cosmic Governance: By this power, the universe is kept in perfect, structured order.
  • World Creation: Jesus Christ, acting under the direction of Heavenly Father, utilized the Melchizedek Priesthood to create worlds without number.
  • Eternal Law: The priesthood operates as a "perfect law of theocracy" that spans across all galaxies and dimensions.
  1. An Eternal Principle Without Beginning or End

Unlike earthly authority, which is bound by time and geography, the priesthood is an everlasting principle.

  • It existed with God from eternity and will continue to exist throughout eternity.
  • It operates independently of mortality; prophets like Adam held cosmic "keys" of presidency before the physical earth was even formed.
  1. Exaltation and "Worlds Without End"

The ultimate purpose of God’s priesthood power is cosmic and human progression—specifically, “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man”

  • The New and Everlasting Covenant: Through temple ordinances tied to the priesthood, husbands and wives can be sealed for eternity.
  • Joint-Heirs with Christ: Faithful individuals are promised that they can eventually inherit "all that the Father hath," meaning they will be given the same priesthood power required to organize matter, govern realms, and propagate eternal life across their own future creations.
  1. Delegation to Earthly Humans

While the priesthood governs the vastness of space, God delegates a small portion of this authority to worthy mortal men on Earth to administer the gospel. This is separated into two orders:

  • The Melchizedek Priesthood: The higher or "Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God". It holds the keys to the spiritual blessings and mysteries of the universe.
  • The Aaronic Priesthood: The lesser, preparatory priesthood. It holds the keys to the ministering of angels and outward, temporal ordinances like baptism.

Does this doctrine fit into the biblical explanation of God, the Universe, time, and creation? If so, tell me how it fits in or how it is contrary to this.

February 2nd 1850: Brigham Young Orders Extermination of the Timpanogos People.

February 2nd 1850: Brigham Young Orders Extermination of the Timpanogos People.

Brigham Young approved an order to “exterminate” Native Americans in 1850 after Latter-day Saint settlers arrived in Utah Valley. The mormon church never has expressed outrage by this extermination order that caused a genocide directly from the orders of Brigham Young.

Yet all Mormons are taught to be outraged by the Missouri Extermination Order (1838): Issued by Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs ordering that Mormons be treated as enemies and driven from the state or exterminated, even though The prevailing consensus among scholars is that there is insufficient evidence to suggest that militiamen invoked the order to justify their actions during that period. There is no evidence of any Mormon ever being exterminated by the governor's order, that was issued after the failed assassination attempt put two lead bullets that he was only saved by a miracle from God. He should have died.  This is the great attrocity the church teaches in its false church history still. The truth is 15,000 Mormons had to flee Missouri due to the crimes committed by the church, including attempted murder of the governor.

Yet there is no outrage from the real extermination order the church issued by their wicked, heartless leader Brigham Young where they exterminated the Timpanogos Utes men and then took any remaining Timpanogos Utes woman and children into custody and were distributed to the Latter Day Saints as slaves, which was legalized under Brigham Young's personal fight with the US government.

Which extermination order was the real crime and what people were the real ones persecuted. It was the Timpanogos Utes and not the Mormons! This is real church history which they have tried to hide for 150 yrs. by whitewashing the truth and telling lies!

What was restored?

JS claims to have translated the golden plates and published the BOM in 1830 and claims to have restored what the early church lost and caused an apostasy. I've read the BOM yet do not see anything he restored from the early church in the Book. All of those things came after as far as I can see. So even if the BOM is true, I don't see what it restored from the early church. Christ coming to the Americas wouldn't have been a teaching of the early church nor any history that took place in the Americas. So what lost doctrine was restored by the 1830 version of the BOM?

Truths traditional Christianity vs Mormonism

Is like to see who agrees that Christianity is made up of absolute truths and Mormonism is made up of truths.

Some examples:

Christianity, God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Mormonism, God was once an intelligence, then a spirit, then a man, then exalted to His Divinity that He has today and can still get a higher exaltation in the future

Christianity, what God revealed to a prophet doesn't change. Mormonism, the current prophet can get revelation that changes any previous revelation to any previous prophet.

Christianity, God protected His Word (the Bible) and will continue to protect it to the end of time. Mormonism, God let men make errors in translations that changed the doctrine of God's Words.

In Christianity, God is always an absolute truth and His commandments are absolute. Mormonism, God speaks in truths and commandments can be temporary.

Please respond in the comments if you agree and if these are fair statements. If you think this is not accurate or fair, please state why.

Here's an understatement that someone else posted on reddit.

"If this was God's church on earth, it wouldn't have so many obvious flaws.

Everything about the LDS Church makes sense under the paradigm that Joseph Smith was not a prophet and that the restoration never actually happened."

The LDS church ties itself up in knots by making up false, impossible explanations, telling lies, gaslighting members, commanding members to not seek answers from anywhere except from the church because they are the experts and everyone else is attacking them (church paranoia anyone?), and also claiming nobody can know the answer in this life and just put it on your shelf in how it responds to the overwhelming abundance of evidence attesting to its falsehood.

Sherlock Holmes was right when he said "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." As is Occam's Razor stating "the simplest explanation is usually the correct one".

Just my two cents.
