how far does your travel spend go?

this is mostly out of curiosity since no one i know talks about this irl — two questions:

  1. what’s your average yearly travel spend?

  2. how far does that go? feel free to include lots of detail here! some conversation starters:

  • your demographics (age, income, household size, kids or no kids, if you travel from a hub)

  • number of vacations

  • international vs domestic

  • obligatory travel (family/weddings/bach parties etc) vs just for fun

  • level from ultra budget to ultra luxury for each vacation

  • how far in advance you plan them

  • if you use points or airline/hotel cards

  • if you pay cash for any specific upgrades

  • if you pay for trip planning tools, including a travel agent

  • if you plan everything out or just wing it when you get there, and what you’ve noticed is the cost of one way or the other

  • if you pay for friends or family or if they ever pay for you

  • if you count food/shopping on a trip as part of this budget

curious about pretty much any aspect of this!! none of my friends talk about money at this level of detail but everyone online seems to be taking insanely luxurious vacations and claiming they paid little to nothing for it because “points” and that simply can’t be the vast majority of people. i know some people play the points game but there’s so many other factors that i want to hear about! and i want to hear from people who spend real money

Belle Burden Strangers New Yorker Article

archive link: https://archive.is/2026.05.26-161744/https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/whats-missing-from-belle-burdens-strangers

I remember seeing this book mentioned a few times here, and more generally in women’s personal finance spaces, when it first came out. This New Yorker article just came out where the journalist was able to get access to court documents and published the real numbers that were mostly glossed over in the book. Maybe I’m naive but wow it’s so many more zeros than I was imagining🫠

I read the book when it first came out and felt it was not relatable but interesting, especially as a “how to not handle your money” reference guide 🙃 This new info doesn’t invalidate the story but it does make it feel a little more disingenuous…did anyone else read the book and the article? What did you think of the book at the time, and have your thoughts changed now?

(I tried to send a modmail with this suggestion but didn’t receive a response, it’s very possible I did it wrong since I never have messaged anyone before on reddit)

Anyway, it seems like the vast majority of posts in the subreddit are simple “searching for” requests (jewelers, med spas, and tailors are the highest frequency topics that i’ve seen but there’s tons). What do people think about having a weekly requests and recommendations thread like r/bitcheswithtaste ? I’d love to see this community become more than just a list of simple requests, and honestly some of the comments on these posts seem like ads (or maybe I’m just paranoid in thinking everything is an ad)

Definitely not trying to take over for the mods, I know it’s a tough job! Just wanted to put the suggestion out there and see what others think!
