Settling in kids

We’re a Swedish Australian family moving from Australia to live permanently in Sweden next month, my husband is the Swede.

Our kids are aged 7 and 5 and have lived in Aus their whole lives, neither really speak Swedish.

They’re enrolled in a bilingual school and preschool and we’ve started working on the same work books my sons grade 1 class are using in Sweden so he’s hopefully familiar with the basic concepts by the time he starts.

They’re active kids, between them they do swimming, football, MMA, ballet and gymnastics and I want to keep this up for them but have no idea how any of this works in Sweden!

We’re excited but also nervous about the move, my 7 year old in particular is a very social little guy and is heartbroken to be leaving his friends and worried about making new ones.

I’d love to hear any tips people may have for settling their kids in. I won’t be working as my focus will be on helping the family with the transition and studying Swedish so we will have some flexibility to our schedules.

How should I approach the school about this?

My son is in gr 1 at a small catholic school, we’ve been really happy with all aspects of his schooling and love the community there but he’s started to come home with some concerns.

Today he came home upset and told me that another boy kicked him and pushed him to the ground, then kicked his head while he was down before jumping on his head. He went to sickbay but I didn’t receive a notification which infuriates me as it seems like a serious incident.

I emailed the school and confirmed this happened, they’re going to investigate further and get back to me with more detail tomorrow

This little boy has being acting out a lot in class and has been bullying other kids in my sons friendship group. He will take their ball if they’re playing soccer and throw it over the fence, will destroy projects and make comments on their appearance. He’s started to be physical with a couple of them including hitting and pushing and gets time out.

Generally the class all get on beautifully together and I get the impression this little boy is an outsider. He’s also from a refugee family and I’m aware there is probably quite a bit of trauma he’s dealing with and want to be sensitive to that but also want to make sure my son is safe.

What recommendations do you have for me in discussing this with the school?
