A warning about Healthcare for people considering moving to Sweden

I moved to Sweden last year and the quality of life here is great overall, security is great, transport is great. But the healthcare ... the healthcare is a sad subject.

In my home country there is a strong preventive culture, people do regular check-ups and blood tests to be sure they are fine. Here? It seems completely 100% reactive.

Unless you are in acute pain or have cancer, it seems they will send you home with maybe an alvedon recommendation.

I have a degenerative disease that could use some regular checkup, to see if it is advancing quickly or if it is under control, because there is a risk of it becoming somewhat of an open wound and it would easily lead to life threatening infection.

I went through the normal steps of the healthcare and even got to specialists, and the doctors basically said "Yes, if it happens it would be a serious emergency, but there is nothing we can do but wait and see" and basically say it is a waste of time to monitor the progression. If felt like this: xD

https://i.redd.it/6mzgc0e18h2h1.gif

Anyway, the thing is, there is a possibility to operate it before it becomes critical. But since a surgery has risks, there is a certain "line" to be crossed to make the surgery worth it. And with monitoring, this prevention can be done, but the doctors said "When it happens, we treat the emergency".

So, they take the conscious decision of not acting until it gets to a life threatening point of no return. It's crazy for me ... but it is a different culture, I guess.

So if you have known health issues and consider moving to Sweden, have a plan B considering you might not get the support you need from the usual healthcare here.

Book an appointment for fingerprints and photograph

Good morning!

My residence permit application has been granted. However, I am being asked to book an appointment for fingerprints and a photograph directly in Sweden (i don't need a visa to go), and currently there are no available appointments in August, which is when I will be traveling.

Do new appointment slots become available regularly?

Thank you in advance!

25M from the UK looking to move to Sweden (Uppsala) with Swedish girlfriend. Any advice on visas/life in Sweden?

Hey everyone,

I’m 25, from the UK, originally from an Asian background, and I’m looking into moving to Sweden in the future. My girlfriend is Swedish and lives in Uppsala, and we’ve been together for 2 years now.

I’m mainly looking for practical advice from people who’ve gone through the visa/residence permit process or moved to Sweden themselves.

We actually had a rejection before because my girlfriend didn’t meet the maintenance/accommodation requirements at the time. She’s currently studying, and while she does receive SEN-related income/support, apparently that didn’t count in the assessment, so the application was mostly savings-based. One issue was also not having long-term accommodation.

So I was wondering:
Has anyone been in a similar situation?
Any tips for strengthening a future application?
How difficult did people find the process overall?
How easy is it to find work once you are here provided you can speak the language?

As for life in Sweden generally, I’d also love to hear people’s experiences. I know people often say Swedes can seem a bit closed off socially at first, but I do Muay Thai and MMA so I’m hoping joining gyms/clubs will help a lot once my Swedish improves.

My girlfriend also has a solid friend group already, which probably helps.

I already spend a lot of time in a year in Sweden visiting her anyway, so I’ve had a bit of experience with day-to-day life there already, but I’d still appreciate any honest advice from people who’ve made the move long term.

Thanks! 🇸🇪

Allergies :(

I might be traveling to Sweden this summer to visit my family for the first time. I’ve grown up with Swedish food at home, but it has almost always been modified because I am allergic to nuts and seafood. How are allergies handled over there? Mainly in Stockholm and Uppsala (where my cousins are).

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Employer delaying work permit application

I have been living in Sweden since 2024 on a residence permit for studies with my husband who has been on a dependent permit. Since early 2025, my husband has been working full-time.

My studies are nearing completion soon, and my husband has been requesting his employer to switch to a work permit since a few months. However, his employer has delayed the application stating that his current dependent permit must first expire before they can proceed.

We understand that we may need to leave Sweden and wait outside the country while the work permit application is being processed. However, our understanding is that the application process could begin even before the current permit expires. Has anyone been in a similar situation and navigated this process before?

Minor applying for Swedish residence permit, does one parent need to go to the embassy or can he go alone?

I got an email from Migrationsverket asking my son to book an appointment at the Swedish Embassy in DC to present his passport and for biometrics. He's a minor moving to sweden alone (Upper Secondary Studies) so wondering if one of us parents have to go with him or if he can just go alone? And if a parent has to be there, would one be enough or do both need to show up? We'd sign a consent form or whatever is needed. Has anyone dealt with this? Let me know!

Student residence permit interview

I have applied for visiting visa previously to visit my fiancé in Sweden which was rejected (the reason was risk of overstaying), and now I applied for student RP for masters and was asked to book an appointment for interview. I heard they ask about future plans and they might also ask about my fiancé, which I’m not going to lie about, but we do plan to apply for sambo visa after I finish my masters. Should I avoid the “I will stay in Sweden” answer because I genuinely want to get my masters there and don’t want to be rejected simply because I have someone there..

Student permit for Indian internationals

Hi,
I had applied for student permit visa on the second week of April, and got a mail regarding digital passport verification. Its been 1 and half months now.Since I didn’t have an e-passport I had declined for a digital verification and am waiting for an invite to the Swedish embassy for in person biometrics.
The problem is I haven’t heard anything back. Is anybody going through the same thing. Is there anything to be done from my side?

Housing requirement for permanent residence

I live with my partner and the contract is on my partner. There is no lease document that I signed. We have a mutual bank account, paying rent through it, and I am registered in this apartment in Skatteverket, of course. I have read now that the landlord can’t add me on the contract at this point. We have lived in this apartment for more than a year now and as this is first-hand, the contract is not limited by time.

Has someone been in this situation? What are my possible actions?

I am thinking of visiting Stockholm next weekend and I'm noticing that hotel prices are unusually high. Does anyone know the driver behind the increase in hotel prices?

Do Swedish employers value language certifications?

Hej!

I will be moving to Sweden late this year. For context, I know Spanish, English, German (up to B1 level) and started learning Swedish last year (hopefully A2 by EoY).

I'm hesitating about taking a new English exam (Cambridge's CPE) given that my latest English certification is 7 years old, and it's one that has an expiration date. By this point, of course, already expired.

Do employers care about this when applying for a job? If so, tell me how much a difference could it make.

I don't ask about German because it's not likely that it will make a difference in Sweden, but I'm sure English will, given that my Swedish won't be competent until a couple more years.

Additional information if useful: I'm a Civil Engineer (and considered as such by the UHR) with most of my experience in mining and infrastructure projects (7+ years) and will target career-related jobs.

Thanks in advance!

Edit:

I appreciate all the input! Everyone seems to be on the same page, which is good to hear. It is indeed different from what's valued for job positions in my country. Thanks again!

Ressidence permit | Suggestions on how to proceed

Hello. I have recently been granted my residence permit; the only remaining steps are the fingerprint verification and the photographs. In my country (Peru), there is no Swedish embassy, and the Migration Agency website asks me to book an appointment directly in Sweden in August. However, they also give me the option to complete the process at a Swedish embassy in a nearby country, such as Colombia or Chile.

I would prefer to do it directly in Sweden, but I want to make sure I will not have any problems entering the Schengen area. From what I have read, having the residence permit approval letter should be enough. However, I cannot find that letter on the website. Should I request it separately?

Would you recommend going to a neighboring country instead?

Is there actually a PR fast track for EU Blue Card holders?

RT. I've seen a few immigration lawyers websites in 2 languages mentioned that you could apply for PR after just 2 years on Blue Card in Sweden. Some also mentioned that you will have to reach B2 in Swedish to qualify. However, Migrationsverket only mentions that if you've had Blue Card for 4 years, you can apply for PR with no mention of language requirements or any possibility for different timelines. So does it even exist?

And assuming no, what's the benefit of Blue Card over normal work permits?

Tack!

I am willing to study in Sweden

I am willing to study in Sweden.

I am a 17-year-old high school student from a non-EU country. I lived in Sweden from the age of 9 to 12, so I integrated very well and speak Swedish fluently. Part of my family still lives in Sweden. Studying there seems like a really good option, even though the tuition fees are very high.

I am very interested in the engineering field and have excellent marks at school. Unfortunately, my upper secondary education does not allow me to meet the specific entry requirements such as Matematik 4, Fysik 2, and Kemi 1. Moreover, Swedish-taught programmes are practically unavailable for international students, because admission decisions come in mid-July, while a residence permit decision usually takes around 2–3 months.

There is one engineering programme for international students at Lund University, but I am still not eligible for it. There is also a Pathway programme at Jönköping University that may help me get eligibility, however, they do not guarantee that it will be accepted by other Swedish universities.

I feel lost and overwhelmed. If anyone knows any information that could help me, please comment or send me a DM. I am even ready to pay for proper guidance.

Thanks in advance.

Passport request for citizenship

My fiancee has just been requested to submit her homeland passport to migration, for what we believe should be the final step toward citizenship!

She is very stressed about sending in her passport because we are catching a flight to our own wedding, back in our home country on June 23rd... because of recent the holiday, and snail mail, the letter to request the passport took a week to get to our door!

Does anyone have recent experience with this? How long should we expect them to have the passport?

Är det normalt att det inte står något om provanställning i ett anställningsavtal?

Jag har nyligen undertecknat ett anställningsavtal där det står

”Type of Employment: Permanent Employment”

Men det finns ingenstans i avtalet någon hänvisning till någon provanställningsperiod. Är det normalt?
