Traveling to Sweden, please help!

Hi everyone! My mom and I are planning a trip to Sweden in a few weeks and I was hoping to get some advice. We'll fly into Stockholm, a few days later into Visby, then Gothenburg, and flying out of Copenhagen at the end of the trip. We have hotels and whatnot figured out in Visby, but are wondering about the latter end of the trip in/around Gothenburg and Copenhagen. There's probably around 6 days or so that we aren't sure where to go, just that we'll be flying into Gothenburg at the beginning and out of Copenhagen at the end, and would like some advice on the in-between!

1 - we'd like to visit a beach town or two, and are not sure which one(s), and if that would be better as a day trip or somewhere to stay in

2 - our family a few generations back comes from Jönköping, and we aren't sure if it makes sense to drive and stay a night or two in or around that area (coming from Gothenburg). If there's anything notable nearby or on the way, that would also be good to know!

Any thoughts on this, and any other thoughts or pointers for the rest of the trip would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Healthcare in Sweden experiences

Hi! My husband & I are looking where to settle down after living a long time in Finland & Spain. Quality of healthcare is of utmost important to us, and we're considering Sweden as one of the potential countries to settle. It seems to have excellent healthcare outcomes even for cancer (which is very relevant to us, as well).

We'd love to hear from people currently living in Sweden (natives and expats) - how has your experience of healthcare been in terms of cost, access & wait times, quality, serious & small problems handling, and general level of trust in healthcare?

Bonus points if you could compare it to other places you've lived - any experiences abroad tend to give deeper perspective.

Thank you!

Tips in behaviour for tourists

Hej, kära svenskar, 👋

next month I will visit together with my brother Sweden for the first time. Since I don't want to seem rude in your country and avoid conflicts, I'm asking especially for this. We will mainly be in the cities of Malmö and Göteborg, that's also where our hotels are, but we're also planning day trips around those cities.

Which tips, don'ts and dos, would you give us especially for when visting restaurants, museums or if we are on trekking trips. We are Germans and I know that we are not always the kind of tourists known for a nice behaviour duing vacations. What kind of things should we be aware of? Maybe there are things that total normal in Germany, but not in Sweden.

I would be very grateful for some tips.

Tack så mycket.

Relocating to Stockholm with a 10-year-old, advice on neighborhoods and making friends as newcomers?

We are family of 3 originally from the US but have been living in Germany for a few years. I have a job offer from a company in Stockholm, so my spouse and I are considering a move and would love some honest, on-the-ground perspective before we commit.

  • Neighborhoods for families - Imagine a friend of yours was moving to Stockholm with a 10-year-old daughter. Which neighborhood would you point them to? Ideally we would like a good public school with some level of support for immigrant kids who don't know the Swedish language.
  • Making friends as newcomers - We currently live in Germany, and while we've genuinely enjoyed it here, one thing that's been surprisingly hard is building a real social network as outsiders. Is this easier or harder in Stockholm, in your experience?
  • What actually works - For those of you who've built a solid friend group here (whether you're Swedish or moved from elsewhere), what helped? Clubs, sports, work, kids' school, something else?

If someone moved to Stockholm tomorrow and didn't know a single person, where would you tell them to begin?

Housemate and landlord access my room anytime

Hej! I rented my room in big house in Stockholm. We share kitchen , and all other stuff but we have our own rooms with locks. Renting landlord said is all different keys to every room (it's 5 rooms). My room in biggest one and it has access to shared vindvåning. When I rented it, what he said " if someone whants to access it they ask you". Now it's not the case. Turns out 2 people and my landlord has access there. Yesterday one tenant thats not supposed to have key to my room opened my door, inspected my stuff (books ,clothes etc), and she before opened my door with key in evening, when i was in bed. Another tennant has key too. Landlord also don't ask when he comes. He kinda of assumes i want be there in weekend, but sometimes I am and he also opened doors when I was in room. Can I complain anywhere? Landlord dint really care

Skatteverket Flytta Till Sverige - Can I do it without the ''enrollment'' document?

I have already completed the form and submitted the notification. Of the documents I could attach, I only included my passport and my antagning.se selection results as proof of acceptance. When I go to my appointment, I'll bring the physical copies of those documents as well, just to be sure, even though I guess I don't need to (as it's in my form) My only concern is the "proof of enrollment" document. As far as I understand, I won't receive that until late August.

Do I need to wait until I have that document before booking or attending my appointment, or is it okay to have the appointment beforehand and provide the proof of enrollment later?

Also, I saw someone saying they printed their form? I had that option after I finsihed it, but I don't anymore. Is that an issue? Thanks in advance

How to get driving experience on a budget in Stockholm without qualified family/friends?

I'm an EU citizen, based in Stockholm, and currently studying. I also don't have family or friends who I can rely on that meet the requirements of a driving mentor. As I am doing a PhD, I'll be here for a while and it would be nice to rent cars when vacationing somewhere with poor public transport. I don't plan on owning a car in Stockholm.

I checked a nearby school and a 70 minute session would cost 1,400 SEK which is steep for me if I need 20-30 lessons. I know I cannot expect a cheap jouney, but if there are any tips that could help reduce this financial barrier, I would be happy to look into it. Someone recommended the Trafiko app which is slightttttly cheaper at 1,250 and for 80 mins, but there has to be other ways too?

Cultural adjustment: What parts of daily life in Sweden took you the longest to get used to?

Hi everyone,

I'm a Brazilian currently living in Portugal, and I've been learning more about Sweden lately. I'm fascinated by the lifestyle, the social dynamics, and the overall rhythm of life in the country.

Instead of looking at policies or numbers, I'm deeply curious about the real, everyday human experience of adapting to Swedish society.

For those who moved to Sweden from abroad, or even for locals observing newcomers: what specific aspects of daily life, local customs (like the social etiquette around fika or lagom), or community integration usually take the longest to truly click?

I’d love to hear your personal stories and insights on what the learning curve looks like when trying to genuinely fit into the local rhythm.

Tack!

How does sommarsemester actually work at your job?

I've been in Sweden a few years now and every July I'm still a bit confused by how the whole industry-semester thing plays out. My workplace basically shuts down weeks 28-31 and everyone's expected to take their semester then, but I've heard it varies a lot.

For those of you working here - does your employer pick your weeks or do you get to choose? What happens if you're new and haven't earned enough semesterdagar yet? And is it true some companies basically force obetald semester on people who haven't accrued days?

Curious how it works across different industries. Feels like one of those things nobody explains when you move here, you just figure it out.

First time in Stockholm – where should we eat (no high-end restaurants)?

Hi everyone! 😊
We’re visiting Stockholm for the first time and staying in Södermalm.

We’re looking for good, casual places to eat and try local food (especially Swedish classics like meatballs, fika, etc.).

We’re not interested in high-end or fancy restaurants, just:

  • local spots
  • good value
  • authentic but casual food

What are your must-try places or dishes in Stockholm that fit this vibe?

Thanks a lot! 🙏

Edit: Thank you all so much for recommendations and effort to write it all down for us!

EU freedom of movement age requirements?

Out of curiosity, is there an age requirement to move to any EU country including Sweden under EU rules with a family member (either spouse or registered partner) who is an EU citizen and is exercising their right to free movement in another member state other than that of their nationality?

As EU rules would not apply to say a Swedish person living in Sweden unless they are returning to Sweden after exercising their right to free movement in another EU country together with their non EU family, in the case of returning Swedes under EU rules is there an age requirement for spouses or registered partners?

As far as I have read, the only mention of age requirements under EU rules are for other types of family members such as the child of an EU citizen needing to be under 21, but no mention of age requirements for spouses or registered partners as far as I can see. So presumably the only age requirement would be for both partners (non EU and EU spouse/registered partner) to be legal adults (18+) and to be legally married or in a registered partnership.

The reason I ask, is because I think I have seen somewhere a mention of EU law allowing member states to impose an age requirement of a maximum minimum (if that makes sense) of 21 for both partners if they so choose to implement a rule, but I cannot seem to find any official sources for this. I have browsed all sorts of EU guidelines and official websites from different countries in the EU and for EU rules I cannot remember seeing an age requirement. Whereas for applying for a residence permit to move to someone in Sweden (sambo/Swedish national rules) the requirement to be 21 is pretty easy to spot.

How much of a hassle will it be to change my name?

I'm a Brazilian-Italian currently moving to Sweden while also going through the proccess of changing my name iin Italy, as it is wrong, and doesn't match my Brazilian surname, as it uses my dad's surnames instead of my mom's last name + dad's last name. So my name is:

Myname Dadmiddlesurname Dadlastname, when it should be Myname Momlastname Dadlastname

Now, since I am entering and studying as an Italian, I am using my current Italian name, but I am in the proccess of changing it, however, all my Swedish stuff will be registered with my previous (wrong) Italian name. How much of a hassle will it be to change it for my Skatteverket, BankID, ID card, my bank, university, etc? This seems like hell. Is it supposed to be this way?

Landlord unfairly keeping deposit after end of rental contract

Hi, I'll try to keep this brief:

I'm an international student in Lund, just moved out of my room (30th of June). The next day, upon requesting my deposit, my landlord surprised me with a message saying that he will not be returning my deposit for these reasons:

- Damage to the front door due to slamming: while I did indeed close the door loudly a few times, so did his children who live downstairs. My roommate who moved in before me even had to ask them to close it more quietly because it was waking her up. On one occasion, however, my slamming caused the electronic lock to malfunction. The landlord never explained what was exactly wrong, but they took a hammer to the bottom of the door and since then, there was no issue. This is obviously the biggest reason for the deposit.

- Lost key: I did indeed lose an electronic key and should be charged for that. Not sure why they never asked for payment until the end of the contract.

Now the remaining two are total lies:

- Left room unclean: it was spotless when I left

- Balcony door not closing: it closes and has never had an issue.

So, that's the whole thing. There was no indication given that the landlord would be requesting money at the end of the contract until literally today.

Is there anything I can do? If so, where should I begin?

Thank you very much.

Primera vez en Suecia

Hi everyone! 😊
I’ll be traveling to Sweden for the first time, and I’d really appreciate some advice.
My flight arrives in Stockholm at almost 10:00 p.m. in early September. Could you recommend a hotel near the airport where I can spend the night? My plan is to rest and take the train to Kalmar the following day.
I’d also love any recommendations for useful apps for getting around (public transportation, trains, maps, payments, etc.) or any other tips that could make my trip easier. I’ll be staying in Sweden for three weeks. 😊
Finally, how safe would you say Sweden is for a woman traveling alone?
Thank you so much in advance for your recommendations! 🙌🏻

American Certified Nursing Assistant to work in Sweden

CNA in the US to Undersjuksköterska in Sverige

Hello! I and my fiance are trying to get some information together to figure out if she can apply for an undersjuksköterska license with a CNA education.

She is currently an athletic trainer in the states and that degree was already rejected as being too specific for the swedish nurse assistant license. She would like to get the CNA certification in the states and then use that to reapply, but we can't get a straight answer on whether they'll accept that or if its comprable. We have been in contact with Socialstyrelsen already and they've been vague on what she can do and what they'll accept for this. They did tell us that she need a year of clinical experience in Sweden in order to get the license, and she is aware and working on the language requirement.

The other thing we are confused about is how to get that year of experience because she need a work visa to live and work in Sweden, but she cant get the license to do job until she have a year of experience....so it seems like a catch 22.

Any advice or has anyone gone this same pathway? Her career as an athletic trainer has been 10 years in orthopedics, pediatric care, first aid, emergency response, evaluation of orthopedic injuries, and rehabilitation through physical therapy. She would love to be a nursing assistant in orthopedics if possible.
