elf lash extendr mascara - why didn’t I discover it sooner?

I just bought a tube of this mascara and I only wish I had discovered it sooner.
My eyes have become sensitive since perimenopause hit and I could no longer use drugstore brands.
I love Chanel and Lancôme mascaras but they’re costly.
Elf’s lash extendr mascara goes in well and doesn’t irritate my eyes. And it’s easy on the wallet.
Now hopefully they don’t discontinue it

Applying for a new job at this stage in my life

I have been feeling restless at my job for a while and I have not looked elsewhere (outside the organization) out of fear of being ‘too old’
(I’m 59 and will be turning 60 this year)

I have been looking at other opportunities more (both internally and externally) as I cannot ignore this feeling that I have outgrown my role.

I’m in a Supervisor position but in many ways, I’m doing higher level manager type duties (I do have a manager and while we are on good terms, she’s not pulling her weight and I feel her days are numbered)

I saw one opportunity recently that sparks my interest (i have experience in the field)and I’ve been working on my resume.

I tell myself ‘it’s the things I don’t do that I’ll end up regretting’… I will apply and see what happens.

Has anyone else applied for another job at this stage in life and was successful?
The thought of the job not working out and being unemployed is a big concern. (I still need to work until I’m
65)

Edit to add:
I did it! I submitted my application so well if anything comes out of it. There is another job that kinda caught my eye. I’ll apply for that one too 😉

Supervisors: ever had a former employee with an axe to grind?

One former employee who was very unhappy with his performance review before he went onto another department in the organization seems to be taking digs at my department/me.

What makes me think this? He recommended one of my team members to apply for a position in the department he’s now in. This person has been chosen (she is very difficult to work with and has faced disciplinary action) and I don’t want to get paranoid that they’ll start colluding against me.
I know, this doesn’t necessarily mean he’s out to get me, but considering his last words to me, it gives me an uneasy feeling.

For context, his review wasn’t bad; he didn’t like the fact that I didn’t give him achieving in one area (there was reason) but his overall rating was achieving/fully meets.

When I told him his review would still stand, he messaged that he would speak to the shop steward to see what his rights are (he also messaged my manager who didn’t get back to him right away; also she did not like him which didn’t help)
In the end, he didn’t file a grievance (I think the shop steward reasoned with him)
I have seen him a few times since he left at functions and I don’t speak to him. Just get weird vibes with him.

With disgruntled former employees, is there anything I can do to protect myself? (Documentation of course)

HUAWEI freebuds 6i vs 6 - worth getting the 6?

I have a pair of the Freebuds 6i and overall I think they’re great.
The ANC is enough for what I need and the mic quality is great on Teams calls (I wish the AirPods would work as well)
I’m looking for a back up pair for work and use my current ones for commutes, gym, etc.

There is a sale at a local computer store that carries HUAWEI products (I’m not in the US) and the 6i are on sale.
But I see the freebuds 6 on Amazon and apparently the mic quality is even better.
My ears are particular and the 6i are comfortable for me.

Should I stick with the tried and true or venture with the freebuds 6?

When employees leave because of the supervisor

For context, I’ve been a supervisor for 6.5 years and have a small team of 3. (I work in a union environment in government, not US)

Two and half years ago my direct manager and I hired an external candidate for a vacancy (she was recommended by her friend who works in a different department in the organization).

This employee was fine during probation but then as time went on, her personal issues began bleeding into her work performance. (She has mental health issues from what I have observed)

Long story short, she has had a Letter of Expectation and two disciplinary letters put into her file. (For disrespectful communication and insubordination respectively) HR agrees that this isn’t a one off and a pattern that is already there.

Needless to say, she wants to leave the team and is in the running for another role in the organization (1 year term); I had to give an internal referral check to HR - I was honest but still professional and did mention behavioural issues and advised HR to look into her personnel file. Whether or not that will affect her getting this internal job remains to be seen.

Another supervisor who is more experienced has told me candidly, “don’t take it personally and be glad when she leaves so she’s no longer your problem”.

I’ve had other employees move on because they were not happy (the workload and a few other factors, including staff turnover)
They seem to be happier in their current posts.
Admittedly I was not the best supervisor when I first got promoted and I struggled, especially when my direct manager at the time did not provide support (he does not like managing people)

Yet this current situation seems to be getting to me more than it should. My manager is seasoned and has done lots of disciplinary action in a previous job and is very pragmatic.

How do you not take things personally when you know you’re doing your job by calling out employees and holding them accountable, etc.?

It makes me question my abilities at times. My current manager and Executive Director have my back and neither one of them likes this problematic employee. My ED has told me that I’m reasonable and she thinks this employee has sociopathic behaviour. (My ED is very astute)

TLDR:
How not to take things personally when an unhappy employee (whom you’ve had to discipline) wants to leave?

Internal reference checks for employee ?

For context, I work for a crown corporation and I’m a supervisor (union).
I have had issues with one employee (external hire and has been with the organization for just over 2 years)
This employee has received two letters of disciplinary action to date and is just very difficult to work with.

I know she has wanted to leave the department for some time and has applied to various internal postings, never making it to the interview stage.

A maternity leave position has come up and she ended up getting an interview and HR has asked me to fill out an internal reference check.
I have filled it out honestly while being professional and did mention positive qualities. I also mentioned addressing behavioural issues and to check her HR personnel file.

I realize this may prevent her from getting the position.

As it’s my first time filling out an internal reference check, especially with a problematic employee, will a less than ideal reference deter an employee from getting a position?

And does HR actually check to see if an employee has had disciplinary action recorded? And does this also hinder an employee from moving onto another position?

GoFundMe - thoughts?

A couple of people I know have set up GoFundMe accounts to ask for donations to cover vet bills for their pets with chronic health problems.

In one of these situations, this person adopted the pet knowing about its chronic medical needs, despite her financial limitations. I know, why on Earth would someone choose to adopt an animal given their circumstances?

Not surprisingly, pet health insurance denied coverage for this animal’s vet costs, hence the GoFundMe setup and now the owner is also facing a huge dental bill.

A friend who has 3 dogs doesn’t believe in soliciting money for vet bills as the owner should be aware of the costs involved. Basically she thinks it’s tacky and not being a responsible pet owner. I tend to agree; I love animals and would not get one unless I knew I was fully able to commit to its well being.

Another person set up one to ask for donations for a down payment on a home.
If people are resorting to this for a down payment then it speaks volumes of the current economic situation.

Given that Gen X’ers didn’t grow up with GoFundMe, what is your opinion?

I don’t use my iPhone 14Pro features as much

As the title says, I don’t use the features of my iPhone 14Pro to its full capabilities and while it’s a great phone, I now kinda regret the $$ I spent on it . (I got it just over 3 years ago)

The battery is starting to deteriorate more quickly (the latest iOS update seems to be the culprit)
It’s at 90% (I had the battery changed about 18 months from when I first got it as it was draining very rapidly)

For my everyday use, the 17e would work and if I wait for the 18 to come out, I lose more trade in value with my 14Pro.

Anyone else go to the 17e from 14Pro?

Looking to upgrade my phone - will it affect my current plan?

I paid off my phone last April and switched to Rogers (from Fido) for a better plan (BYOP plan) and of course they increased their rates after 6 months so I switched back to Fido on their BYOP plan they were offering.
The rate $40 for 60GB is valid for 24 months.

I’m thinking of trading in my current phone (iPhone 14Pro) and buying an iPhone 17e outright with the difference. Apple says everything would migrate over as I would have an eSIM vs a physical one and it won’t make a difference.

Is this legit? (skeptical as Apple wants me to upgrade $$$)

Getting Telus fibre internet tomorrow and

Is it just me or are Telus apps very buggy?
I had to cancel my original order and went into a store to have them correct my service address.

They had to submit a service desk for their back end and the address is still missing the full street name in my address but at least the postal code is correct. (Apparently this is not unusual for Telus)
Of course the billing address is wrong and the sales person helped me call in to correct it.

Now I need to wait for the internet installation to sign into the Telus app and the sales person said she would help me with that. (I’m very tech savvy and that made me feel old lol)

I hope fibre optic is worth it and better than Shaw/Rogers 🤞

Life coaches - worth it?

Life coaching has been a booming industry and I see it everywhere on social media.

I’m at crossroads in life; my work life is becoming increasingly stressful and there is likely to be big changes coming up. My job is protected (for now) and if I can hang on for another five years until retirement then I will. (I’m almost 60)

Has anyone used a ‘life coach’? And was it worth the $$$?

Reaching customer support via chat or text

I’m looking to switch internet providers and Oxio seems to be popular (no ISP is 100% perfect)
I’ve texted to chat with an agent and it looks to be a while before someone is available.

Is this normal? Especially if I’m a potential new customer?

Edit to add: I finally got a response after a 2 hour wait; the usual experiencing higher than normal volumes etc

Follow up to changing providers

I managed to speak to Telus today and also Shaw/Rogers.
Telus is offering 1.5 MBPS plus a $100 credit for 2 months (for $90 per month) and also sweetening the pot by offering discounted rates for adding on streaming services. ($115 per month or thereabouts)

I called Shaw/Rogers and they could only offer $75 for 500 MBPS or $100 for 1.5 MBPS
What an insult, as I’d be getting fibre optics with Telus.
I’m inclined to cancel my services with Shaw/Rogers (they did say I would have to pay a $25 admin fee for cancelling before the last day of my contact)
I don’t know if Telus can go any lower (I’m in Vancouver if that’s worth any consideration)
Thoughts?

Internet plan up for renewal

I’m dreading calling into Rogers to try and negotiate a new internet plan given the long wait times I’ve read about.

I went to Costco earlier tonight and they’re not able to provide a good deal at this time and said the best thing is to call Rogers to see if they can offer something comparable to what I’m paying now.

I’m currently paying $86 for 500 MBPS and that’s already with a promotional discount, being a FIDO customer and auto payment. (Regular rate is $115)

I tried online via the app and I get the message to call or chat as I’m an existing customer (to take advantage of the $10 discount)
Curious what rates existing customers have been able to negotiate?
Wish me luck getting through.
