is 6-8 months enough to build my Upwork profile ?

Hello, I’m a software engineer with 2 years of experience. I’ve worked on industrial computer vision projects and data science projects( time-series applications)

I live in a poor country where salaries are extremely low compared to the workload , extra hours , stress. At my last job i earned around $875/month while working on industrial-level projects for large companies, and most of the profits went to the company owner.

Because of this, I’ve started thinking seriously about freelancing. I already have a small network of local clients, but the pay is still not great, and since my friend brings me the clients, he also takes a percentage.

That’s why I’m considering trying Upwork.

i dont want to waste money on Connects, so i’ve been thinking about a long-term strategy: slowly building my Upwork profile in a niche like data science (time series) / computer vision by asking some of my local clients to pay me through Upwork. I would continue doing this for a few months to build reviews and credibility naturally.

How good do you think this strategy is? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I’m posting for a close friend who has been with her company for a very long time. without giving extra details , but I really need your help. I’m from USA, so I don’t fully understand how these things work legally.

My friend is a mother of two sons. For the past few years, she has been suffering from severe depression and anxiety, and she has been on antidepressant medication before, Any sudden change in her life causes her intense stress!

Until last month, things at work were okay and relatively chill, and she had her own space where she was in her comfort zone . But recently, her manager changed things to a high-surveillance, high-stress seating arrangement. Since then, her condition has worsened a lot. She even collapsed from stress at home and had to take a few days off.

During that period, her mental health deteriorated even more, to the point where she expressed suicidal thoughts to me. That honestly scared me a lot....

Quitting her job is not an option . She has financial responsibilities, loans, and two children to take care of.

So I suggested that she see a psychiatrist to get a formal medical memo/report that she can present to the company, asking to at least return to her previous workspace. She’s not asking for special treatment, just to go back to a setup where she can function and continue working.

Questions for the SG community:

  1. If she gets a formal memo from a psychiatrist recommending "workplace accommodations" ( basically returning to her previous setup thats it ), is the company obligated to consider it under Tripartite guidelines?
  2. Does her long tenure offer her any protection against "quiet firing" or being pushed out without cause?
  3. What is the best way to approach HR about a medically sensitive issue related to workplace stress, without escalating it into a personal conflict?
  4. How do the Workplace Fairness Act (2025) and the Tripartite Advisory on Mental Well-being apply to more subtle situations like this? If a change in the work environment leads to a documented mental health relapse for a long-term employee, is the company required to provide reasonable accommodation (like returning her to a stable workspace)?

i want her to handle this professionally and by the book to protect her health and her career. Thank you for any guidance.

EDIT : the problem is her boss , she intentionally did this change to her in a subtle way , idk why . so talking directly to the boss is not an option..
