Jupiter.
One planet. One giant protector.
The other day, i read about how Jupiter helps protect the planets in our Solar System.
Because of its enormous mass and immense gravitational field, Jupiter has intercepted, captured, or redirected countless comets and asteroids over billions of years. It is by no means a perfect shield. Under certain circumstances, it can also perturb objects into Earth-crossing orbits but many astronomers agree that Jupiter has profoundly shaped the impact environment of the inner Solar System. Without it, Earth might have experienced a far more hostile cosmic history.
This got me thinking.
Jupiter, which is identified with Deva Guru Brihaspati in Vedic Jyotish, is considered the most benefic planet in the Navagraha system and is said to expand and protect the significations of whichever house in the horoscope it sits in and casts its benevolent aspects (Drishtis) on.
A strong, unafflicted Jupiter in the chart, in its own, exalted or friendly sign is said to bring wisdom, divine protection and luck to the native. The best houses for jupiter to be placed in are 1,2,4,5,9,10 and 12. When Jupiter is placed in its own sign or sign of exaltation, Cancer, in any of the Kendra houses, it forms the auspicious Hamsa Yoga, which one of the 5 Panch-Mahapurush yogas. This yoga is said to bless the native with learning, noble conduct, spiritual inclination, respect from society, and the guidance of worthy teachers.
Along with its standard 7th aspect, Jupiter also has special 5th and 9th aspect. The 5th aspect triggers past-life merits (purva punya), sharpens intellectual reasoning, supports higher education, and blesses matters of children and creative solutions. The 7th aspect brings harmony, ethical wisdom, and stabilization to marriage, long-term contracts, and public interactions. The 9th aspect is Jupiter’s most powerful trinal aspect. It acts as a supreme protective shield over a house, amplifying luck, long-distance travel, spiritual evolution, and alignment with righteousness (dharma).
Jupiter when aspected by or conjunct with other benefic planets, gains strength. When conjunct with malefics or debilitated planets, it does not lose its benefic properties, but protection, blessing and luck, often come after a period of hard work, tests or divine surrender.
Whether Vedic Jyotish is ancient science that our ancestors passed down to us or merely an esoteric subject, has been an a topic of hot debate since the inception of modern science and is an interesting topic in itself. But whatever be the reason, as a student of Jyotish, i find this planet endlessly fascinating as it is the karaka of so many things starting from the jeeva itself to children, wealth, knowledge, Dharma, spirituality, higher learning, philosophy, Guru or Guru-like figures and even marriage and spouse in some traditions. Sometimes it almost feels as though the heavens themselves chose Jupiter to play the role of the great protector, both in the Solar System and in the language of Jyotish.
Having a strong Jupiter in a chart is indeed a Divine blessing and on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, lets pay our obeisances to Deva Guru Brihaspati who is the embodiment of Dharma, wisdom and Daiva Anugraha.
ॐ श्री गुरुभ्यो नमः।
