Thomas Buas, Mercurios Buas and their perceived ancestors.
What is a "perceived ancestor"? This is a term I have translated from Greek (νοητός πρόγονος), it means the ancestors which someone THINKS he has, and the ancestors someone sees his CURRENT identity into. When it comes to "perceived ancestors", the objective reality doesn't matter as they factor in only when national consciousness (a social construct defined by sense of belonging) comes into play.
Who were Mercurios and Thomas Buas? They were Arvanites from Argolis. With ties to the power families of Angeloi and Spatha. Their ancestors ruled Aetolia until Karolos Tokos took it.
Tzanes Koroneos writes: "And Karolos ruled Angelokastron, and took what wasn't his. And 2 nephews, Buas of lord Mouriki, hid and run away. [They went to Constantinople] then the king welcomed them and said they should not be afraid (of Karolos) anymore and sent them in the Moreas to rule.[...]"
Mercurios Buas:
Mercurios Buas was born in Nauplio in 1478. At 11 years old he had to leave the Peloponnese with his father and some other rebels. It was at that point he changed his name from Maurikios to Mercurios. From then on he went to become a general of the Holy Roman Empire.
Kostas Krystallis writes: "He fought with no end as the head of his Hellenic combrades in the plains and the mountains of Europe.[...] Always giving victory to the lord that hosted them and glory to his Hellenic heritage."
He was a founding member of the Hellenic brotherhood of Venice.
Thomas Buas:
Around 1514 king Henry of England hired some Greek Arvanites "Stradioti" in his army. Nicander Nucius from Corfu follows a division lead by Thomas of Argos(Buas), Antinios Stisinos and Theodoros Louchisis.
During the siege of Boulogne, Thomas and Nicander find themselves face to face with 1000 French cavalry, with only 500 soldier of their own.
At this moment, Nicander writes, Thomas turned to his soldiers and said: "Comrades, as you understand we have found ourselves in a place far away, serving a monarch of the far north. We have nothing of our country except our bravery and courage and the courage we will use to fight the enemy, because their numbers are not enough for our own virtue. We are children of Hellenes and we have nothing to fear of this barbarian horde, all we have to do is fight bravely and win, proving through our actions the ancient military might of the Hellenes."

Medieval Greek loanwords in Arvanitica.
Arvanitica has a number of medieval loanwords that have fallen out of use in Modern Greek.
Arvanitica Gomar = Donkey, from medieval Greek "γομάριον/gomarion" with the meaning of something that carries things.
Kusar = Thief from medieval Greek "κουρσάρος/koursaros" meaning pirate.
Koro = The acting of cutting or avoiding something, from some Greek archaism of the ancient verb "κειρώ/keiro" (to cut, to remove, to abstaint) some examples in Arvanitica: Koros=barber, Koropis=he who abstains from alcohol, Koroves = an animal feeder with no handles (called ears=ves).
Was Irene Pappas Albanian?
When Irene passed away, I was surprised to learn that Albania was mourning the death of an Albanian actress at the same time as us. Until I learned that the actress was Irene Pappas.... So what was the nationality of Irene Pappas and what was the evidence of her being Albanian? There are 3 reasons she is considered Albanian by some. I will try to present them fairly and debunk them.
Argument 1) "Her real surname (Lelekou) is Albanian" The surname "Lelekas/Leleku" comes from the Turkish word "leylek" meaning "stork". Its not a uniquely Albanian name. "Lelekas" exists in Greek as a loanword for "tall".
Argument 2) "She was an arvanite" while the reasons why the term "Arvanite" and "Albanian" are not interchangeable has been explained already I need to mention that there is no strong evidence of her being of Arvanitic roots. Her 2 villages of origin (Chiliomodi and Preveza) are not historically Arvanitic. Not that I completely reject the possibility of Arvanitic roots from the villages neighboring Chiliomodi
Argument 3) "She said she was Albanian in an interview." While this argument is strong. It contradicts live action footage of Irene declaring not only her Greek nationality but also her descent from Ancient Greeks. In the below 1995 interview the question of Greek contributions to European culture comes up. For which Irene had this to say "They (the Europeans) need to understand that we are a preserved people that lives in the same place and speaks the same language with few differences since ancient times."
The nationality of Odysseas Androutsos (Verousis).
Odysseas Androutsos (Born Odysseas Verousis) was born to Andreas Verousis and Akrivi Tsarlampa in 1790 either at Preveza or Ithaca. His father was executed by the Ottomans when he was 7 years old for participating in the Orlov revolt. He would join the Greek war of independence and become a prominent figure until he was killed in 1825 by the Greek government which falsely believed he was in cahoots with the Ottomans.
Unfortunately, like many Greek Arvanites of the revolutionary war, his memory is being trampled online by Albanian nationalists who frequently alter his Wikipedia page and the Wikipedia page of his village (Livanates).
This letter, sent by Odysseas to Adamantios Korais in 1823 proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was Greek.
"Respected Patriot! You have spent most of your life away from our fatherland, not suffering the sight of it enslaved and ruled by barbarians. You left for the civilised nations, not so you can live a rich life, but to collect, like a bee, the most substantial teaching that would elevate the people of poor HELLAS. Your efforts have not been in vain. Since the moment you started preaching in our language all that is good, all that education brings to the world, those of our race also begun to elevate their minds to higher places, and to recognise their political situation. In short the freedom -loving feeling of the HELLENES had begun to awaken for some time now, but all that you have said and your publications have sowed the seeds of ancestral virtue and greatness in the heart of Hellenes."

An etymological analysis of Arvanitic mountain names in Greece part 1: Sterea Hellas.
Bardusia (Korakas): From Arvanitic "Bardushi" meaning white, put together with Greek "-ia" a suffix for toponyms.
Gkiona: From the Arvanitic version of John "Gjon", the word is also borrowed in Greek as the name of a small owl (Scops) because the sound it makes sounds like "Gjon". Meaning "the mountain of small owls".
Birbilio: From Arvanitic "Birbili" meaning "swallow". "Meaning the mountain of swallows".
Liakoura(Parnassus): From Arvanitic "Liakur" meaning "naked" or "with no vegetation".
Loutsa: From Arvanitic "Lutza" meaning "wet".
Liofateza: Is hypothesised to be Arvanitic in origin but the etymology is unclear.
Guras(Othrys): From Arvanitic "Gura" meaning "stone".
Names will be added as I find them and corrections will be made.
Today is the birthday of Laskarina (Pinotsi) Bouboulina. A woman who gave EVERYTHING including her children for the liberation of Greece.
What's the difference between Arvanites and Andriotes natives? A collection of testimonies.
(Stauros Larios)
-What does the name "Arvanites" mean?
-I dont know, to tell you the truth.
-Are Arvanites something different from Greeks?
-No they considered themselves Greeks, but they spoke Arvanitica and did not know where they came from. And they didnt know why they spoke it, if you asked the elderly "do we know why we speak Arvanitica" they didn't know.
-Is there an ethnic division (from Greeks)?
-No, no, "Greeks" they said they were.
-Does something distinguish them from the natives? A difference in mindset or way of life?
-They are different, because they are tougher/colder, certainly less educated, and they were employed in ships later by the natives.
(Alexandros Stauras)
-Are Arvanites different from the rest of the inhabitants of the island?
-No, we are all from the same cut of cloath.
-Are they different in any way?
-No, how would they be different?
-Are you an Arvanites?
-Arvanites let's say: Bastardarvanites, with the Albanians we can't communicate, only a bit can we say a few things.
-What does the word "Arvanites" mean now?
-There are no pure Arvanites here.
-When were your parents born?
-I dont know.
-Are you from Andros?
-My mother is from Amolochos and my father from here. The amolochites are not really arvanites. They are unique even now.
(Tsourmpis Takis)
-What does the name "Arvanites" mean?
-Arvanites are the only tribe noone likes. We dont like them. I speak (Arvanitica) too, and understand them.
-What do you mean? Those who spoke Rhomaica made fun of those who spoke Arvanitica?
-In the country (the south part of Andros) noone knew (Arvanitica), not at all. They cursed them. And the Arvanites called them "big dicks", and did not like us. They didn't care about Arvanites because they had a negative view of them.
-Despite not speaking Rhomaica they felt Greek?
-Of course, they are Greek. In the (revolutionary) war they feared arvanites because they were savage.
(Elena Mamais-Makrina)
-What a characteristic of Arvanites?
-They are hard workers, but the women lived beastly. The husband would ride the donkey carrying flour and fruit and the wife would be walking. If they had a baby the woman would carry it too to work. There were no roads back then. When roads finally came to Gaurio, only men came. The women never came, the men would shop and then drink.
-Whats the difference between the North (Arvanitic) and the South (Rhomaic) side? Where there issues or differences?
-The Andriotes(Southerne) would be working on ships, an entirely different world. Here these were the poorer places, the wilder places as they said.
-Did they curse at eachother?
-If they (Arvanites) went south they wouldn't even give them a chair to sit, they considered them degraded. But after the (German) occupation came there was hunger, they all left (the south) and came here where they would find food and settler and would make friends with the Arvanites.
(Demas Mamais)
-When you went South, did you say you were Arvanites?
-Sometimes they would tell me to make fun of me, not much. With that word (Arvanites) they would be degrading us. It meant "the poor people" the second grade houses.
-Was it an issue of being "less Greek" than the Southerners?
-No that wasn't it.
-So you Arvanites feel like Greeks and not foreigners.
-No they never called us foreigners.
-When you were in Athens, were did you say you were from?
-We didn't say we were Arvanites, we said we were from Andros. Arvanites are a tougher, colder and crueler people. As warriors say, a strong people.
The nationality of Markos Mpotsaris.
Markos Mpotsaris was a Greek Arvanite Hero of which Greekness can not be disputed. In his own words, recorded in the Book "Biographies of Heroes: Georgios Karaiskakis and Markos Mpotsaris." In the section "Demegoria of Mpotsaris". Greek Historian Georgios Gazes records his last words before his heroic sacrifice in battle.
In his words: "My brothers in arms, our enemies are many, well prepared and in valley well dug(with trenches). The enemies of our faith are the SKOUDRIANOI ALBANIANS, nations experienced in warfare. They, who we have fought often, know of our advantages, but their number is far greater than our strength and our patriotism. A head on fight is therefore impossible and very dangerous for us. So it is my opinion that we should fight them with a risky approach, we shall attack them at night when they will not be prepared to face us. We will either be successful in our attack, or we will become victims for our lovely homeland, both of which are HELLENIC and heroic, and we will become glorious example in the struggle for faith and country to our brothers, I hope the first scenario to become a reality, but if God decides for us the second (scenario), what greater joy will it be to go find Leonidas and his 300 Spartans in the Elysian Fields?! I myself will see that this plan comes to fruition, if you approve of it and feel HELLENIC BLOOD in your veins."
