Just did my first 3 oil change on my new 1996 FXSTC and I think my engine is getting louder? I’ve heard many things about what oil to use and what some kinds do but don’t know where to start. I just put in what the Harley tech told me for my which was SAE 20w-50 for ALL my oils. It didn’t make sense but he assured me. I followed the manual as close as I could with the primary oil level but maybe the chain is loose? Was thinking the transmission but have no idea what to hear for.

Just bought my first Softail and I’m HATING these after market foot control extended things. I’m trying to revert it back to somewhat oem style and am having trouble finding a set that is the whole package.

The bike is a 1996 Softail Custom, please help find some good replacements haha

Been wanting to jump from my 1996 Sportster 883 to a nice decent dyna model! Sucker for an older carbureted bike too. Saw this on Facebook and was instantly in love. But is it worth it??

What are the pros and cons of these older dynas? What should I look for when I go to look at it in person?

Well maintained.. always on tender... Scheduled rides for upkeep.... Pretty much picked up from a friend... He thought he was going to ride.. but never got around to it.. it would come with the original everything.... Plus a set of pipes that came with it extra... And a windshield... Always kept clean.. interior kept.... Never any starting issues... It's practically brand new..... I originally paid 6,500$ personally myself.. but if I could get 6,000$ out of it I'd be ok with it..... It's a beautiful bike..... On paperwork someone will literally be the second owner...

So tbh I don’t quite know where to go from my sporty but this Softail Custom caught my eye. Too big for me or a good step up? Was obviously thinking of going to an older dyna but I wanna get something a little “nicer” and thought a Softail might be a good direction.

I talked this guy down from 6k$ to 5 which I think it’s a good deal? Has 25,000 original miles the seller said too. Gonna try and see it in person this week sometime so what should I look for?

Let me know what a good move is I'm open to advice! Thanks folks

Main thing for me really is I wanna stick to the older bikes. Carbs preferably.

Maybe some of you will recognize the bike from previous posts lol but I wanted to update those who do that the rattle is gone! It WAS the bolt hold the tank one. It felt tight and looked snug but I put a wrench to it and, voila, it stopped!

So I enjoyed the no rattle rides for a week or two but now.. my Speedo, odometer, signals, etc don’t work. My bike died on me at a gas station and had some buddies jump me. We thought it was fixed but died again shortly after. We agreed it was probably the battery somehow and I impulsively bought a new one for 150$. We swapped it in the parking lot like true Harley owners and it fired up! The speedometer was not reading correct at all but it was running great.

Fast forward to today and I went on a beer run down the road. Bike started cold. A little slow but it normally does so I wasn’t tripping. Got it to temp by the time I was at the gas station again and it never turned back on afterwards. Bump started it on a hill but now no Speedo signals, odometer or anything works.

Question is.. where do I start here? Fuses? Starter? Wiring? Stator? New new battery?? Let me know yall, thanks for the help ✌️
