Failing miserably at shaping

I just started doing my own gel nails a few weeks ago and every time I use tips either for gel x or press ons, the shape just looks so wide and blob-like.

I make sure they fit to my nail or are even a touch smaller before I glue them down, then as soon as I finish with the top coat they are so much thicker 😭 I don’t have this problem when I use gel directly on my natural nails. I have been filing down the inside of the fake nail to thin it out near the cuticles and sides, and using very thin layers of gel, and keep running into this issue. They don’t look terrible, but definitely look like beginner nails.

I’m using pretty cheap amazon gel tips since I’m just starting out, would investing in a better quality brand help do you think?

Just started gel this week– my first finished set!

Took me about 6 hours! Some are definitely better than others as I figured out my technique

Still going!

Honestly never thought I would get this far, but this subreddit has helped so much. I also found a new love for gardening, which keeps my hands busy, and it’s super satisfying to pick the dirt out of my nails after 😌

One week of progress after trying press ons!

This is the longest I’ve been able to let my hands heal in maybe the last year. Just wish I could get them to not be so dry!! I feel like I’m moisturizing constantly.
