IOQM First Pass Solve Rate

How much should be the first attempt IOQM first pass solve rate? I have roughly correctly attempted 50% of Number Theory, 40 % of Algebra and 40% of Combinatorics on first pass. Geometry pending. This percentage is based on the number of questions not by marks weightage (2/3/5). So 50%of Number Theory means some questions of 2 marks, some of 3 marks and some of 5 marks.

[Proposal] Regroup IOQM Categories to 8–10 / 11–12 instead of 8–11 / 12 — draft email to HBCSE inside, please send your own if you agree

For IOQM 2026, eligible students (born Aug 1, 2007 – Jul 31, 2014; Classes 8–12) are currently split into Group A (Classes 8–11) and Group B (Class 12 only).

That means a 13-year-old in Class 8 is competing for the same cutoff as a 17-year-old in Class 11 who's had years more Olympiad training. We think a fairer split would be Group A (Classes 8–10) and Group B (Classes 11–12).

Why this matters:

  1. Cutoffs are currently set by the oldest, most-prepared students in Group A. Class 8/9 students get squeezed out even when they show real potential, because the bar is effectively set by Class 10/11 students with much more prep time.
  2. HBCSE has put real effort into growing Olympiad participation — a fairer junior cutoff would actually support that goal instead of working against it, especially for students without access to long-running coaching programs.
  3. 3–4 more years of runway. Catching talented kids in Class 8–10 gives HBCSE/MTA far more time to mentor them toward IMO-level performance.
  4. Fewer dropouts. Early wins keep junior students engaged with Olympiad math before JEE/board pressure hits in Class 11–12.
  5. This isn't a new idea globally — AMC (8/10/12) and UKMT (Junior/Intermediate/Senior) already split by age/grade for exactly this reason.

If you agree, please personalize and send this to HBCSE (don't just copy-paste verbatim — a flood of identical emails is easy to ignore, slightly different wording carries more weight):

Subject: Representation Regarding Category Regrouping for IOQM 2026 (Proposal: Group A – Classes 8–10, Group B – Classes 11–12)

Dear Respected Committee Members,

I am writing to request reconsideration of the participant grouping for IOQM 2026. Currently, Group A spans Classes 8–11 and Group B is Class 12 only. I propose restructuring this into Group A (Classes 8–10) and Group B (Classes 11–12).

This change would give junior contestants (Classes 8–10) a realistic, attainable cutoff at the IOQM and subsequent RMO stage, rather than one effectively set by Class 11 students with several more years of preparation. It would also support HBCSE's own efforts to widen Olympiad participation, give HBCSE/MTA a longer mentorship runway for identifying future IMO talent, help retain junior students against later JEE/board pressure, and bring IOQM's structure in line with international practice (e.g., AMC 8/10/12, UKMT tiers).

Thank you for considering this change to support young mathematical talent across India.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Feel free to add your own reasoning too — the more varied and genuine the emails, the more likely this gets taken seriously.

Shameful

Very shameful of MC Sir to use this student movement to promote his book. Very opportunistic. This moment is of the students. Not book/ coaching promotion by showing photo editing skills. I had very high regards for MC Sir but this is not right. One may agree or disagree with CJP but no one should have the right to use someone's distress to sell and make profits.

@mods Do not delete this post. This is neither political nor promotion of any coaching.

Allen IOQM Module or VOS IOQM book

Which one should I buy? Does anyone of them has 2 marks type questions?

Also just need to confirm if the following are included in them:

- Solutions to exercises (not just answers)

- PYQs with solutions

There are many IOQM Workshops starting these days. Which institute's workshop should one join? Is it better to join online mode or offline mode workshop? Any other considerations?
