Question about McDonald's hiring and student B permits

I recently walked into a McDonald's in Bern for a scheduled Crew Member interview, but before the interview even started, I was told they couldn't hire me because I have a student B permit, as they don't handle the required migration office paperwork.

The interviewer also mentioned that students with a student B permit are generally expected to work in their field of study. However, I confirmed with the migration office that I'm allowed to work full-time during the summer break until September.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this specific to that franchise, common across McDonald's Bern, or even true for restaurants in general?

Is handing out CVs in person still a good idea for student/Aushilfe jobs?

Hi everyone,

I'm an international female student living in Bern with a student B permit, and I'll be starting my Master's at the University of Bern this September.

I've been applying online for student and Aushilfe jobs (retail, supermarkets, restaurants, warehouses, etc.), but haven't had much luck so far. My German is improving, but it's not fluent yet.

I was wondering if it's still common in Switzerland to walk into places with a printed CV and ask if they're hiring. For example, would it make sense to visit places like Coop, Migros, Aldi, Lidl, Ryfflihof, cafés, restaurants, or shops in person, or do most employers only accept online applications nowadays?

For anyone who's hired staff or found a student job this way, I'd really appreciate your advice.

Looking for a Student/Aushilfe Job

Hi everyone,

I'm an international female student and I'll be starting my Master's at the University of Bern this September. I'm looking for a part-time job. I have a student B permit and I'm actively learning German, but I'm not fluent yet.

To be honest, I feel like I've applied to almost every student or temporary (Aushilfe) job I could find online (retail, supermarkets, warehouses, restaurants, cafés, events, etc.), so I thought I'd ask here in case anyone knows of something I've missed.

I'm available to work full-time throughout July and August, and from September onwards I'm looking for around a 40% workload alongside my studies.

Does anyone know of companies or places in Bern that hire students with limited German? Or if your workplace is hiring, I'd really appreciate any leads or recommendations.

Thank you so much!
