I’m a special education teacher in a self-contained 8:1:1 classroom in a community school. My students are autistic, and several have significant behaviors, including hitting, hurting each other, running around, and difficulty regulating. There have been a lot of incidents where students are hurting one another, and I’m finding it really difficult to manage the classroom and keep everyone safe.
I was told that part of the problem is that the classroom isn’t structured enough for the students. I understand that structure is important, but I’m honestly at a loss for what that should look like in practice, especially with students who can become aggressive or dysregulated.
I feel like I’m constantly reacting to behaviors instead of actually teaching. I’m trying to figure out how to create a classroom environment where the kids are safe, regulated, and able to learn, but I feel completely overwhelmed.
Has anyone else taught in a self-contained autism classroom with significant behaviors? What did your classroom structure actually look like? What routines, visuals, schedules, or systems made the biggest difference?
And honestly… how do you know when it’s time to leave? I’m at the point where I’m seriously considering quitting because I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this.
Hi everyone! I’m a newer teacher working for the NYC DOE. I joined and had an amazing experience with the principal at the time. Unfortunately, they left, and I’m now working under a new principal who and I really don’t seem to be a good match. I’ve been feeling like the relationship has become increasingly difficult, and I’m concerned that it’s going to make the school year very challenging.
I’m hoping to potentially get released from my current school and move to another NYC DOE school. Has anyone here ever gone through the process of being released/transferring to another school during the school year?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through this, especially if you have advice on:
How the release process works
Whether it’s realistic to move schools during the school year
Who I should speak with first
Anything I should be careful about when approaching administration or HR
I’m not looking to cause problems or burn bridges — I just want to find a school where I can be successful and have a better working relationship with my administration. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
