Sierra.ev interactive visual PDI inspection tool - free to use, tablet-optimised, generates a PDF report you can email to the dealer

Sierra.ev PDI Tool - the first and the only one out there that provides a comprehensive PDI documenting experience.

The story behind this craziness actually starts before the Sierra.ev was even announced.

During a Curvv.ev test drive, I casually asked the dealer whether I could bring in a professional PDI service before taking delivery. The answer was no - professional external inspectors are not permitted on the premises. I filed that away at that time.

When I eventually ordered the Sierra.ev and delivery was approaching, I already knew that professional pdi route was closed. So I cooked up a recipe on Claude.

It started simple and got progressively more detailed each time I found a gap in what it covered. By delivery day, I had a full interactive tool running on my iPad that let me work through every inspection point systematically, photograph defects inline, and export a timestamped PDF report at the end.

My assigned sales executive was with me for the entire PDI- it took just over three hours. Midway through, during a lunch break, I shared an interim PDF report into the dealership's WhatsApp group. That is when things got interesting. The team leader and others in the group saw the report and immediately assumed a professional had been hired -- the format, the photo documentation, the structured findings.

They came rushing over to where I was doing the inspection. The look on their faces when they realised it was just the customer with an iPad was, honestly, one of the more satisfying moments of the whole buying process.

When to schedule your PDI -and how to protect your access to the car

This is the part most guides skip this part... You will be surprised at the amount of people who have skipped PDI just because they did not know they can do it even!

PDI happens after the car arrives at the dealership but before registration and delivery. The moment you pay in full and the dealer registers the car, your leverage on pre-delivery defects drops significantly. So the sequence matters.

Here is what I would recommend:

  1. When the dealer confirms the car has arrived, schedule your PDI visit before making final payment.
  2. Block two full days -one for the PDI itself, one buffer day in case you need to negotiate on any findings.
  3. Make final payment and approve registration only after you are satisfied with the PDI outcome, or have written acknowledgement from the dealer on any defects you are accepting.

The practical way to enforce this is simple: do not transfer the final balance until you have completed the inspection. Dealers will push to get payment done first.

Resist politely but firmly - "I will complete payment once we have done the walkthrough together" is a reasonable and completely legitimate position.

If the dealer tries to rush you through the PDI, the tool helps here too. A structured checklist with 140+ points takes time by design. Work through it methodically. The documentation you generate is worth the time it takes.

About the tool

No app install, no login, no data sent anywhere - everything runs locally in your browser and saves to your device.

It is designed primarily for iPad because that is the most practical form factor at a dealership - one hand holds the device, the other opens doors and panels. You can photograph defects directly into the checklist as you go. It works on mobile but the layout and workflow are optimised for a larger screen.

What it covers:

Tata Sierra.ev full price list + what it actually costs on the road -- my take after living with one

I have been driving the Sierra.ev Empowered A 75 kWh for a two weeks now, and the one question I keep seeing in DMs and comments is "but what does it actually cost?" So here is the full picture, from ex-showroom to what hits your bank account on delivery day.

What you actually pay on the road

Ex-showroom is not what you pay. Here is what gets added:

  • TCS at 1% of ex-showroom (mandatory on any vehicle above Rs 10 lakh)
  • Registration / RTO (varies by state, typically Rs 10,000 to 15,000 in Maharashtra)
  • Insurance
  • FastTag
  • Any accessories you add

Insurance is where things get interesting. The range is genuinely wide:

  • Best priced independent policies (ACKO, Digit, etc. with proper IDV): Rs 45,000 to 55,000 for the base and mid variants
  • Average market rate: approximately Rs 70,000
  • Dealer-bundled insurance: can go up to Rs 1,00,000 to 1,30,000 and often comes with lower IDV than independent policies

My strong advice

do not take the dealer's insurance without checking. Get an independent quote first. The IDV (Insured Declared Value) matters -- it is what you recover if the car is totalled. A lower IDV at a higher premium is the worst combination, and that is what dealer-bundled policies tend to offer.

For rough on-road budgeting, add Rs 85,000 to 1,00,000 over ex-showroom for registration, average insurance, FastTag, and basic accessories. So:

  • Entry point (Pure 63 kWh, basic independent insurance): approximately Rs 20.5 to 21 lakh on road
  • Empowered A 75 kWh with charger, average insurance: approximately Rs 27 to 27.5 lakh on road

My honest take on where the value sits

I bought the Empowered A 75 kWh and I would make the same call again, but I want to be straight about the logic.

The jump from Adventure to Empowered is where the 75 kWh battery starts making more sense -- the range difference between 63 and 75 kWh matters more as you go up the usage spectrum.

The Empowered A is a significant price step over the Empowered, but it is the only RWD variant that brings ADAS L2+. If you are buying a car you plan to keep for 7 to 10 years, the ADAS package has a real safety case. If you mostly drive inside a city at 40 to 60 kmph and will never use ACC or Lane Keep Assist, the Empowered 75 is a more honest buy.

The AWD variants are niche. Unless you have a genuine off-road or extreme weather use case, the RWD 75 kWh makes more financial sense -- you pay a premium for the AWD setup and give up some range (C75 goes from 510-530 km down to 480-500 km).

One thing nobody tells you upfront: the AC charger (7.2 kW wall box) is bundled with certain sub-variants and adds Rs 49,000 to the ex-showroom price. If you are buying a home charger separately or through Tata Power, check whether the bundled charger actually saves you money or is redundant.

Finally took delivery of my Tata Sierra EV Empowered A 75 - here is everything that happened, including the parts dealers would rather you not know

Long post. Worth reading if you are anywhere in the Sierra EV consideration process, or just want to see how the full journey plays out from "I need to replace my Tigor" to "It has to be the Sierra."

The background

I drive roughly 70-75 km a day, MMR outskirts to a central Mumbai workplace, almost entirely urban stop-go. My 8 year old Tigor had crossed 121k km and was costing me real money in repairs. The more painful number: I was tracking 9.3 kmpl real-world on that commute, which at Rs 111 per litre works out to over Rs 21,000 a month in petrol with occasional weekend drives. That is what eventually broke the inertia and pushed me toward buying a new car seriously.

Before the Sierra EV came into the picture, I evaluated a fair few options over about two months: Seltos diesel (eliminated after discovering the 2026 model uses active SCR/AdBlue and has documented DPF regeneration issues in urban use), Duster 1.3 turbo petrol (genuinely liked it, test drive was excellent, but E20-to-E30 ethanol transition risk killed it), Hyryder strong hybrid - zero excitement, poor cabin quality experience, Nexon EV (test drive car had 8% SOC -- next to useless for evaluation), Mahindra 3XO EV (pleasant surprise - the sales person at the Mahindra dealer proactively guided me toward the 3XO EV over the 7XO when I mentioned budget, which I respected).

I also spent significant time on the corporate lease route. The numbers looked compelling on paper - around Rs 7+ lakh in tax savings over 3 years. But when I dug into the actual policy documents, the battery warranty clause was the deal-breaker: under lease, the RC registers in the company name, which means you take ownership as a second owner after the lease ends. Tata's HV battery warranty drops from lifetime/unlimited km (personal purchase) to 10 years / 1,60,000 km from the registration date. At my usage, that km cap gets eaten through in about 4 years after I take ownership- exactly when battery risk starts to matter, hence personal purchase it had to be.

Why the Sierra EV Empowered A 75

The 75 kWh variant on personal purchase gives you lifetime, unlimited km battery warranty with a huge asterisk that we often don't read. The 665 km claim with a potential ~510-530 km real world range essentially eliminates charging anxiety for my use case. The ADAS suite , HypAR HUD, 540-degree surround view, and the general packaging of the car was not really justified the premium over the Curvv EV. However, nostalgia got the better of me, and the rear seat space of Sierra vs Currv.ev tipped into Sierra's favor. I chose the Rishikesh Rapids as it stood distinctively EV (is also the launch color), though I liked the Naintial Nocturne but ws not available with my variant. Colour shift in sunlight is not gimmicky, it actually works.

The dealer experience

My sales executive was responsive, patient, and never pressured throughout the process. I also referred a colleague of mine who subsequently bought a Nexon EV through the same dealership - which tells you something about how he operates. From TD to Sale, there were minor hiccups, but nothing enough to call out loud.

The original proforma had the dealer-bundled insurance at Rs 109K. I sourced ACKO independently at ~53K for better IDV and got the dealer insurance removed from the proforma. The saving was over Rs 55,000 just on that line item. Always, always ask the dealer or anyone who is selling you the insurance for the Policy Wording. The dealer quote was not competitive on IDV or premium, nor the dealership broker was forthcoming to share the policy wording.

The PDI - this is the part I am most proud of

I was told at the onset that external PDI are not permitted. With little choice (the other dealerships were already pathetic, this one was the only decent one) I did a structured PDI using a custom tool I built (offline HTML, covers ~150 checkpoints with photo attachments per item). At delivery, I documented: 108 passed, 3 failed, 14 deferred, 16 not inspected.

The three failures:

  1. A tactile paint defect near the front passenger door - raised spots, not something you would feel unless you ran your hand across the panel
  2. Sticky left ORVM (minor but documented)
  3. Summon Mode non-functional

On the paint, the dealer's response was to reframe it as "surface roughness" that would be resolved by Teflon coating. I accepted this in good faith and approved RTO registration. That was the correct decision in the moment - but it left me with only a framing, not a warranty commitment in writing.

What happened next: the Teflon coating did not remove the raised spots. That reframing has now been undermined by the treatment's failure, and I have raised a warranty reassessment request.

The dealership leadership assumed a professional third-party assessor had been brought in. They had not - it was just me with a well-structured checklist. That assumption created real accountability. Written documentation of defects before RTO approval is a meaningful lever. Use it.

Post-delivery - where things stand

I had assumed that there will be some glitches, so went ahead with that mindset. Three noteworthy issues:

  1. Driver side Dashboard display malfunction- diagnosed at the delivery, as a significant hardware failure. Not a minor glitch. An escalation email had gone out requesting resolution within two working days, and the car was picked up and delivered back in two days.
  2. Paint defect -Teflon failed, warranty reassessment requested. This one has a long tail.
  3. Boot-lid light fogging- noticed at delivery, documented, resolution pending at first service.

To be fair: the escalation process produced a prompt response with senior management copied. The process is working. Whether the outcomes will be satisfactory is still to be seen.

Other bits for anyone considering this car

  • PPF: I went with XPEL ExoArmor 7 year at Rs 148k from an XPEL certified installer in Mumbai. Plan is to remove the PPF at year 6-7 and transition to ceramic, aligning with the end of car loan.
  • Insurance note for anyone buying an EV: get the actual policy schedule, not the product brochure. Standard motor wordings often do not explicitly confirm EV battery cover, zero depreciation override on battery, or coverage for non-electrical accessories beyond Rs 50,000.
  • Verify all electrical and non-electrical coverage in insurance this before you assume you are covered.
  • Ventilated seats: if this is on your checklist, understand that these systems circulate cabin-temperature air. They are not cooled seats. In a Mumbai summer, the leatherette upholstery matters more than the fans.

Current Status:

  1. Driven 340kms so far, no driving niggles per se. One 120Kms drive, experience Adaptive Cruise Control - worked flawlessly, the panoramic sunroof is a kid favorite (glass always closed), seating comfort is top notch.
  2. 4 charging cycles registered so far, 3 of them at the dealer end - none reaching 100% - so the BMS is still evolving. Will report back after 1000 kms.
  3. Arcade.ev registration issues through out the 11 days since delivery, escalated to dealer and Tata Motors - not resolved yet.

Would I suggest the Sierra EV to anyone else?

Yes. The car itself is genuinely good. The journey to get here was longer and more complicated than it needed to be, and the post-delivery hardware failure is a real problem that should not exist on a car at this price point. But the Tigor is still running as a backup, the EV covers my commute without anxiety, and the running cost difference is stark.

What are legitimate alternatives to Nexon or Currv EV twins?

I am in the market to upgrade my Tigor XZA 2018, driven for 122,800 kms and saw a sharp dip in mileage from an average of 11.9 to 9.7 kmpl - a direct impact of E20 fuel. Mostly city driving, 70 kms daily in bumper to bumper traffic. Quarterly long drives, longest driven is Mumbai to Alleppey in Kerala and back, but several other long drives including to Goa, Hyderabad, Banglore, Hampi, Udaipur to name a few.

Tata SC experience has been a hit and miss, and after trail and errors, found the most decent one that I am currently hooked to... Tigor is well maintained, still drives well but a few rusting issues have cropped up.

When I started considering replacements, I was thinking of switching to CNG or Diesel. CNG automatics are only with Tata and the Home Minister outright rejected any hopes of considering a Tiago, Punch or Altroz with the threat of a divorce (typical, never real). The new Tiago is very interesting, and I would just plonk the money in to get the CNG AMT for my daily runs and saving on costs with CNG. Alas...

In the last one month or so, did several TDs cars that were in the 15-22L OTR range. Finding a top end car without sunroof is impossible, as it is something that I felt was not on par for the course. Buying through company car lease for tax benefits hence OTR is corp registration cost, max budget to stretch to is 22 L OTR.

1. Renault Duster 1.3 Turbo Petrol (Techno+, in-budget variant) Heart says yes, head says no. Strong, enjoyable drive and the best dealer experience of all (same-day TD, punctual home exchange visit etc.). Parked, not eliminated, over the E20-to-E30 fuel-policy risk and petrol running cost at Rs 108+ a liter, risks with Renault ASS experience, no SC nearby closest one is about 30 kms away.
Cost: 22.03 OTR

2. Kia Seltos 1.5 Diesel (HTK(o), in-budget variant) Liked the look and interior, ride was okay. Eliminated over DPF regeneration problems on my stop-go urban route (70kms a day mostly city), the AdBlue requirement, and the isobutanol policy risk. HTK(O) is a stripped spec at the budget ceiling. Dealer missed the scheduled home TD and ignored three callback, poor follow up experience post the TD.
Cost: 22.08 OTR

3. Tata Nexon EV (Empowered 45) Liked the EV character, but poor evaluation was incomplete (TD car at 8% SOC, so range and highway behaviour untested) - this especially when the TD was done from Showroom. Few Concerns: leftward driver-seat tilt, very common, and 45 kWh range needing more highway planning for longer drives. Tata dealer did not follow up for a re-TD, as if they just dont want to bloody sell it.
Cost: 16.6 OTR

4. Tata Sierra 1.5 Hyperion DCA (Petrol, top variant) No diesel available for TD in the two showrooms I had nearby; while my actual target was the diesel TC. Liked the drive and ride, fresh packaging. The in-budget diesel (Pure+) misses the Superglide suspension; the one that has it (Adventure+) lands ~Rs 23L, over the ceiling.
Cost 21.8 OTR

5. Mahindra 3XO EV Pleasant surprise, punchy, well-priced (a couple of lakh under the Nexon with discounts), rear seat acceptable. Smaller battery pack at 39 kWh range, a high boot-loading lip, and an overt design language and even smaller road presence than Nexon. Some smart touches, interior quality better than Nexon, but the car settings and the electronic UX was very poor.

6. Toyota Hyryder Hybrid Power was adequate, but three sharp negatives: handling not sharp with two front wheelspins on a highway u-turn during TD (this happened when traction control was already on), the sunroof blind too thin so light bleeds into the cabin and distracts, and inconsistent AC cooling as the car switched between EV and petrol modes during hot afternoon. Its case rests on high mileage hybrid; the TD did not give me a feel-good, and it loses on features for the money spent versus the Curvv. Cost slightly higher than max budget caps at 23L OTR.

7. Tata Curvv EV (Empowered X 55), it is the front-runner, TD passed: Recent launch, so no discounts but the new car is at least cheaper by 3 lakhs and now is more VFM. This time got another dealer about 24 kms away to do a TD, and found it genuinely pleasant to drive. Rear seat acceptable since people who might occupy the rear seat are not tall enough, coupe roofline not a dealbreaker, under-thigh support is strictly okay. Powered tailgate with gesture control, per haps the best 360 camera (same in Nexon too); rear visibility through the raked glass limited as expected. Single-pedal-to-standstill mode could not be tested (rep could not demonstrate; regen level 3 slows to ~5-8 kmph). Dual-zone climate absent on the EV variant, which is a sore miss when it is available in the ICE version as TwinZone. Not sure why Tata does this... Cost: 19,50 L OTR.

Was considering Maruti e-Vitara Alpha, the one credible in-budget alternative not yet driven, but from all the reviews that I watched and read, does not seem to hold a candle to Currv.

Creta EV - too many varients is a huge piss off confusing as well, plus very costly in comparison. The budget version gets basics right, but not fun bells and whistles

Buying decision is final, but not the product as Car Lease is indeed very attractive proposition.

Calculation showing tax benefits of company lease vs personal loan buy, does not include savings on driver salary as I am not employing one and not planning on doing a \"jhol\"...

I want to know real Currv.ev / or EV owners feedback and suggestions, and was there any other car that I missed?

All those naysayers who say dont buy a TATA, please do know that I have gone through the fair share of misery myself, and in the same breath, I know and have spoken to people who have had similar experiences with Hyundai, Maruti, Renault and Skoda as well.
