Starting a men’s community group in Vancouver

A lot of men have friends.

Fewer have someone they can call when life gets ugly.

I’m starting a men’s community circle in Vancouver for honest conversations about friendship, loneliness, emotional risk, practical support, and the strange pressure to handle everything alone.

Our first afternoon has two connected discussions:

1:00–3:00pm: Men and Friendship - Why Is It Hard to Ask for Help?

We’ll talk about why men can spend years joking, working, gaming, drinking, or watching sports together without ever saying what is actually going on.

Why is offering practical help easier than admitting you need it? When does independence become isolation? What makes a friendship feel safe enough to lean on?

RSVP: https://www.meetup.com/vancouver-meetup-group/events/316263196/

3:00–5:00pm: Minding the Gap documentary discussion

Minding the Gap follows three young men connected by skateboarding as they move into adulthood carrying unstable homes, economic pressure, violence, damaged relationships, and experiences they were never taught how to name.

Skateboarding gives them friendship, escape, and somewhere to put their bodies when home does not feel safe. But the film gradually asks a harder question: what happens when boys survive pain without learning how to talk about it?

It connects directly to the earlier discussion. Male friendship can become a lifeline, but friendship alone does not automatically break cycles of silence, anger, shame, or inherited violence.

Watch the documentary beforehand. This is a discussion, not a screening.

RSVP: https://www.meetup.com/vancouver-meetup-group/events/316263346/

Sunday, September 6 at Vancouver Central Library.

The sessions have separate RSVPs, so you can attend either one or both. Most people come solo.
