Over 70% of companies using generative AI in creative work in Japan don’t actively disclose it, survey finds

Japanese creative company Amana published the results of a survey on AI and creativity on June 30, as reported by GameBiz. Based on a sample of 400 creative and marketing professionals working in the corporate world, the survey found that while a majority of companies are already using generative AI in creative work, most are not public about it.

According to the survey, 59% of respondents said their company uses generative AI, while 61.75% said AI was already influencing internal creative decision-making. As the study puts it, this suggests that gen AI is affecting not only how production processes work, but the creative activities companies engage in themselves.

However, despite the high adoption rate, the data showed that 71.4% of companies using AI do not actively disclose to fact. The biggest challenges cited related to AI use were copyright and intellectual property concerns (32.5%), followed by the lack of clear evaluation standards (24.0%) and inconsistent quality of output (21.5%). Additionally, 43.5% of respondents said their organization either did not have AI usage guidelines in place or were unsure whether such guidelines existed.

Based on these findings, the study concludes that corporate AI adoption in creative work has “moved beyond the experimental stage and into practical day-to-day use.” While this survey covered the broader creative industry in Japan, the topic is also relevant to games. A survey published by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) in September last year found that 51% of Japanese game companies were using AI in some capacity, with the top two most common uses being creative (generation of visual assets and images, followed by story and text generation).

Since then, some companies like Capcom have adjusted their policies surrounding AI to encompass only “routine tasks” rather than creative work, but adoption seems to be growing at a rather fast pace. Given the backlash from consumers that arises pretty much each time a company announces or is caught using gen AI, it’s not surprising that some aren’t disclosing it in the first place, though hopefully storefront disclosure requirements like Steam’s are helping improve transparency.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ to Skip Social Media Influencer Screenings

Universal has decided to skip having word-of-mouth (a.k.a. influencer) screenings for Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey.

Instead, after the film’s global premiere screening in London on July 6, the film will begin screening for film critics.

The move bucks the trend of studios getting ahead of professional reviews by inviting fan-site bloggers and influencers to see major releases in advance and then letting them post (often highly enthusiastic) mini reviews on social media.

MK Tolak Gugatan Syarat Usia Calon Kades, Tetap Minimal 25 Tahun

Sebelumnya, Putri Naylarizki Lasamano dan Muthi'ah Alamri mempersoalkan Pasal 33 Huruf e UU Nomor 3 Tahun 2024 tentang Perubahan Kedua Atas UU Nomor 6 Tahun 2014 tentang Desa.

RAM manufacturers have been sued for allegedly fixing prices and supply, leading to increased costs

The class action lawsuit claims Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have been squeezing supply

The three largest RAM manufacturers in the world are being sued for allegedly fixing the supply and prices of memory.

The sharply rising cost of memory is widely attributed to demand for AI datacentres, with major vendors signing long-term deals with AI firms.

Now, as reported by Law360, a class action lawsuit – filed by a proposed class of individual and business consumers – accuses Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron of playing a large part in what’s being dubbed ‘RAMageddon’ by the media.

The complaint alleges that the three companies – which make almost all of the world’s supply of DRAM – have been working together to fix component prices while reducing supply.

It accuses the trio of reducing its supply of DDR3 and DDR4 RAM, leading to a sharp increase in price for consumers who use it, and focusing most of its production on HBM – a high-cost, high bandwidth form of 3D-stacked DRAM mainly used by AI datacentres instead of consumers.

“The DRAM oligopolists have simultaneously cut production, coordinated a pivot to HBM and exit from DDR3 and DDR4, and otherwise decreased and locked up conventional DRAM supply while prices charged up with mind-blowing scale and rapidity,” it claims.

It argues that as DRAM shortages led to prices rising, “still Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron continued to squeeze conventional DRAM supply, simultaneously and publicly directing their resources toward less-profitable-per-die HBM – or in some cases, simply junking conventional DRAM supply channels altogether”.

It also says the plan is working, as “consumer purchasers of conventional DRAM and devices incorporating it have paid supracompetitive prices and have otherwise suffered the impacts of a distorted market crippled by the behavior of DRAM oligopolists”.

It says that in a competitive market, “prices climbing at that rate pull supply toward them”, because at least one of the three should have seen the rising prices and decided to focus its output on that product, making its competitors either do the same or lose customers. “That did not happen,” it says.

The suit argues that the three companies have control over the DRAM supply and can’t be realistically challenged by anyone else, because the cost of building one DRAM fabrication plant can be tens of billions of dollars, and can take years to complete.

It also claims that even if a new company did try to challenge the trio, the process used to reliably manufacture chips “comprise decades of accumulated trade secrets”, and US export controls “bar the only other procedures, in China, from acquiring current-generation equipment”.

“The practical consequence is that when the three firms restrict supply, no outsider can expand output to undercut them,” it claims.

The lawsuit also notes that the companies were found guilty of price-fixing DRAM in the past. Back in 2005, Samsung agreed to plead guilty and pay a $300 million fine for participating in what the US Department of Justice referred to at the time as “an international conspiracy to fix prices in the DRAM market”.

Hynix also pleaded guilty at the time and was fined $185 million, while Micron reportedly avoided a fine by reporting the incident and working with prosecutors.

The suit notes that the three companies were also investigated by the Chinese government when prices spiked again between 2016 and 2018. “The conduct alleged here is the third such cycle in the same market, among the same firms,” it claims.

As the price of memory and storage continues to rise, practically every company using these components has been increasing the price of their products accordingly. Last week Microsoft raised the prices of its Xbox consoles by between $100 and $150, while Apple also raised prices across its hardware products on the same day.

Before that Valve confirmed its Steam Machine would retail for over $1,000, saying its “original goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable”.

Sony and Nintendo have also increased the price of their hardware in recent months, and analysts suggest further increases could be on the horizon if the situation continues (as it appears it will).

PlayStation Console Sales Fell to Their Lowest May Total in 26 Years Following PS5 Price Rise

May was a catastrophic month for PlayStation and Xbox sales in the U.S., driven by price rises that have clearly had a significant impact on consumer interest in buying a new console.

Sony raised the price of PS5 consoles in April, bringing the cost of a standard PS5 to $649.99, the PS5 Digital Edition to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro to $899.99. Those price rises appear to have dented PS5 sales in the U.S. in May, when, according to new Circana data, PS5 spending fell 43% year-on-year, and unit sales plummeted 58%.

Xbox didn’t do much better. Surprisingly, Xbox Series hardware spending actually grew 7% versus a year ago, but unit sales fell by 12%. That’s the result of Xbox Series costing more in May versus the previous May (Microsoft increased the Xbox console price by $20-$70 in the U.S. last October).

Mat Piscatella, Senior Director, Video Games at Circana said PlayStation hardware unit sales fell to their lowest May total since May 2000, which seems pretty terrible for Sony. Meanwhile, Xbox hardware unit sales were the lowest ever recorded for a May month. Bad all round.

Hammering home the point that getting into console gaming has become more expensive, Circana said the average price paid for a new unit of video game hardware reached $502 in May, up 14% compared to a year ago ($440). May 2026 PS5 average pricing increased by 33% versus a year ago to $672, with Xbox Series up 22%, to $524. Traditionally, consoles get cheaper over the course of a generation, not more expensive.

Microsoft announced another Xbox Series price rise this week, although it doesn’t come into effect until August. I can’t imagine those September Xbox sales are going to be particularly healthy, if what's happened in May is anything to go by.

The price rises are the direct result of the "RAMpocalypse," which is an ongoing global memory shortage and price crisis driven by semiconductor manufacturers reallocating their DRAM and NAND production capacity to high-margin hardware for AI data centers.

“Last October, we increased Xbox console price by $20-$70 in the U.S.” Microsoft said when it announced Xbox price rises this week. “We hoped another price increase would not be necessary, and we have spent the last several months working with suppliers on options. Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027.

"The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles. Unlike phones, computers, speakers, and other consumer devices, consoles are typically not sold at a profit, but instead for less than they cost to make.”

When Sony hiked the price of PS5, it blamed it on “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” It’s a similar story for pretty much every hardware manufacturer around. Just look at Valve’s Steam Machine.

When will this console price pain end? No time soon, reports indicate. Microsoft expects another doubling of console storage and memory prices by the fall of 2027. Fingers crossed for 2028, then!

Apple Lobi Gedung Putih Beli Chip dari China, Meski Masuk Daftar Hitam Pentagon

WASHINGTON.
