Shrek's revenge: part I
Yup, I've started a new run AGAIN. This time it's because my last run (HeartGold) somehow glitched and went BLIND, and I just rage-quit.
Now, to explain the title...
Around a year ago I have played my first ever nuzlocke - a nuzlocke of Pokemon Sapphire, which I have posted about on Reddit.
The run ended with a series of blunders and big losses that ended with my defeat at the (probably) cold feet of Elite Four Glacia. The titular Shrek was my starter, Mudkip, who died all the way to Roxanne, because I was stupid and didn't realize I was in crit range, which was, of course, when I got crit.
I wasn't ready to immediately try again.
But now I am, and Shrek and I will get our revenge. Maybe.
Rules:
- I can only catch the first encounter per route
- if a mon dies, it's buried in the depths of the PC (aka permaboxed)
- level caps
- dupes clause, shiny clause
After saving prof. Birch from a level 2 Poochyena (couldn't he just.... kick it?), I steal Shrek the Mudkip from his bag. He calls me to his lab to return it, but I bribe him into letting me keep him by threatening to let the Pokemon reasearch community know how much he sucks at his job. Like, seriously, you call yourself a Pokemon professor, yet you need rescuing from a level 2 dog.
After defeating Birch's daughter and stealing his balls, I embark on my journey for revenge.
Since my nickname theme for this run was animated characters, the Zigzagoon I catch on Route 101 gets named Remy (later on I realized this Zigzagoon is a girl, and Remy Ratatouille is not, but oh well), while the Poochyena from Route 103 is named Death, and also has a similar gender problem as Remy. We sure are genderswapping characters today!
Route 102 gives me a Wurmple named Jiminy Cricket, who evolves into a Beautifly before the first gym, Route 104 gives me a Wingull I name Private, and in Petalburg Forest I find a spiritual succesor to Toad the Breloom, one of the MVP's from my previous Sapphire run. Since this Shroomish is a girl though, I name her Fiona.
Roxanne is the first Gym Leader in my path and the one who took Shrek's life the last time (but not first blood, I somehow already had two deaths before her). Her Geodude just dies to a Water Gun, but in comes her Nosepass, who does have kind of a lot of bulk for this point in the game, so she takes quite a few Water Guns and Mud Slaps to bring her down, especially with the healing from her Oran Berry and Roxanne's potion. However, I actually pay attention this time and make sure to never be in crit range, although Roxanne didn't get any crits this time anyway.
After the Gym, Shrek embraces the mud and evolves int o a Marshtomp, and I have a chance to get two encounters on Route 116 and in Rusturf Tunnel. I repel through Route 116 so I can dupe Whismur in the tunnel and get something else on 116. But then I accidentally kill the Whismur in the tunnel. So much for that plan ig.
Route 116 gives me Mulan the Nincada anyway, so no big deal. Afterwards I sail to Dewford with Mr. Briney to deliver a letter to Steven (and get lost in Granite Cave doing so because I refuse to use a moveslot on Flash). I attempt to catch a Zubat while in the cave, but I also accidentally kill that too, so no bat. I was a bit scared of Brawly as he can set up a bunch with Bulk Up, and I don't have a Taillow to sweep him with like last time. However, Jiminy Cricket makes quick work of his Machop with Gust. Makuhita comes in, and I decide to hit Stun Spore just in case, as he just bulks up. But then I just OHKO with a crit Gust, sooo that was anticlimactic. Oh well, I'm not gonna complain about an easy win.
It's time to head to Slateport and subsequently to Mauville. On the way I catch Joy the Plusle (Route 110) and Ray the Volbeat (Route 117). Joy joins the team and Ray joins the box. I also decide to retire Jiminy despite his elite Brawly performance, simply because Mulan the now Ninjask is a much better Bug/Flying type. Shedinja does also appear in an empty Pokeball, but since Wonder Guard is very OP, I'll only use him If I really have to. Death and Fiona both also evolve, but I accidentally overlevel Fiona, so I can't sweep Watson with Breloom this time.
I can, however, sweep him with Shrek. Yeah, Wattson was never gonna be a problem with Marshtomp on the team.
That's the run so far. I'm not too scared of Flannery, but we'll see...
