Grade 11 grades were bad because of a family loss. How much can Grade 12 improve my chances?

I’m an Ontario Grade 11 student applying to business/commerce programs. I did pretty well in Grade 10, with around a 92% average, but my Grade 11 grades dropped quite a bit to around 70.

The main reason was that my grandfather and aunt passed away during Grade 11, and it affected me pretty badly mentally and emotionally. My motivation and overall mood were really low, and my grades suffered because of it.

Going into Grade 12, I feel like I’m in a much better place and I’m confident that I can get 90%+ in my Grade 12 courses. I’m wondering how universities will look at this kind of situation.

Do universities mainly focus on my Grade 12 marks when making admission decisions, or will my Grade 11 grades still hurt my chances significantly? Would the improvement from 92% in Grade 10 → poor Grade 11 → hopefully 90%+ in Grade 12 help show that Grade 11 was more of an outlier?

I’m mainly looking at BCom/Business programs. Any advice from people who have been in a similar situation would be appreciated.

UAlberta BCom Marketing chances 87% average, applying late

I'm an Ontario Grade 12 student (OSSD) applying to UAlberta BCom Marketing for Fall 2027. I'm planning to apply late (after June 1) since I want them to use my Grade 12 marks instead of Grade 11.

My Grade 11 average: ~87%
My estimated Grade 12 Top 6 average: 85-87%

My Grade 12 courses:

· English (ENG4U): ~80%
· Advanced Functions (MHF4U): ~80%
· Data Management (MDM4U): ~85%
· International Business (BBB4M): ~85%
· Drama (ADA4M): ~90%
· Gym (PSK4U): ~90%

Questions:

  1. With an 85–87% average, do I have a good shot at UAlberta BCom Marketing with a late application?
  2. If I get accepted in July/August, how likely am I to get on-campus housing?
  3. Anyone here get in with a similar average or late application?

Any advice helps. Thanks
