Anyone still using kerosene + gear oil for chain maintenance instead of chain cleaner & lube?
I've seen a lot of riders recommend using dedicated chain cleaner and chain lube, but I've also noticed many experienced riders still swear by the old-school kerosene + gear oil method.
Here's the process I'm planning to follow:
Clean the chain thoroughly with kerosene using a chain brush.
Wipe the chain completely dry.
Apply SAE 90 gear oil sparingly to the inside of the chain while rotating the wheel.
Wipe off the excess oil to avoid attracting dust.
My bike is a Honda CB350 RS, used mainly for city commuting with occasional highway rides.
For those who've used this method long-term:
Has it worked well for your chain and sprockets?
Any downsides compared to branded chain lubes?
Which gear oil grade do you recommend (SAE 90, 80W-90, etc.)?
How many kilometers do you usually go between cleaning and lubrication?
I'd love to hear real-world experiences before I switch.
