Thrift store finding
I love the moment when you realize there is an interesting pencil in $1 bag at the thrift store. Made in Canada in the 50 or 60s. Sharpened by knife a long time ago.

I know there is a lot of free resources online, but I think I want the structure and the community to really devote time consistently and learn.
Thank you!
I find pencil extenders of recognized brands are really expensive. You would need to use the extender for quite a long time to make it worth it if you are using pencils around 2USD/pencil like Mars Lumograph, FB 9000, etc. which is what I use for drawintg.
On the other hand, Amazon, Aliexpress, etc sell cheaper extenders that seem worth the money if they work well. But do they? Can any body recommend any cheap pencil extender? I know, "cheap" is very relative, but please throw some links of extenders that work for you :)
My friend bought me a Carl Angel Royal 3 in Japan. I can't wait to start using it when it arrives.

It was only $23 USD. Made in Japan. The Classic is made in China (which I'm not sure it matters).
I didn't realize this model had also powerful teeth and people seem to hate the marks they leave. Isn't that the trade off for a good grip and consistent outcomes? Aren't the teeth marks just esthetics in an item that slowly disappears as you create, hence the pencil charisma? Shouldn't we just show the marks with pride because we own a good sharpener made in Japan out of mostly strong metal?
It is my first crank sharpener so I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. And yes I am getting protective because the internet is bullying my baby for its ugly teeth LOL
How does the point of the Royal 3 compares to that of the Royal and the Classic?
I hope I enjoy my Royal 3 for decades, and that it bites many pencils during my life and after. Because I heard it is going to outlive me. To make it better it was only available in pink!
I wonder who will deserve to inherit my mighty Royal 3.
My senior neighbour gave me this today since she knows I'm into pencils. I am assuming they are just cheap pencils with cute messages sold years ago at Purdy's chocolates in Vancouver, Canada. I'm surprised they are 2B and not HB as cheap or marketing pencils commonly are.
Does anybody know anything about these pencils?
Hi,
There is a BOSTON KS 8 Slot Mechanical Pencil Sharpener for sale online. I heard they are good sharpeners, are they? It looks quite clean and shiny from the pictures. $25 USD. What do you guys think? What decade do you think it was manufactured?
I have been wanting a crank sharpener for a while, and I am trying to decide whether to buy an old one built to outlive you or a brand new one such as a KH-20.
Thanks!
I found this copying pencil in a thrift store. I did not realize it was a copying pencil until after buying it so I really have no use for it but it seems old, and it is made in Canada. Quite toxic, I read.
It is more purple than in the picture. How old do you think it is? It is shinny so it was hard to take a good picture but you should be able to read what it says by zooming in!
Thank you!
Hi,
I found two of these unsharpened pencils at a thrift store in Canada.
How old do you think it is? Was it made in different countries? I have seen posts on this pencil community with pictures of similar pencils made in the US, but not made in Canada. Thank you!
Does anybody use a lead holder to use the broken leads of charcoal pencils? If so, is is a 3.2 mm lead holder enough? Or which one do you use?
Thanks!
I found this pencil at a thrift store in Canada. Apparently it is from the WW II era when Britain was cut off from its primary pencil suppliers in Germany. Built with British wood.

What is the quality of the lead? Has anybody used one? I use pencils for drawing, not writing.

Anybody has more info?

What lead holder size should I buy for when I accidentally snip my charcoal lead when sharpening?
I would like to reuse all those bits, but they are quite thick. The lead does not have to be all the way inside the holder because the bits are relative small I guess.
I could use it for powder I guess, but I'd rather use them for drawing.
I use General's charcoal pencils.
Thank you!
What is your opinion on these pencils for drawing? What year were they made more or less? Somebody is selling them online in my neighbourhood and they look new. I am thiking of buying them. I heard vintage pencils are better than moder ones some times. I don't write with pencils, I only draw, and I am a beginner.
Thank you!
Hi,
I have a Pentel ZE 22 and I can't find the refills locally. Would refills from other brands work, such as the STAEDTLER Mars 528 50, work?
Thank you!

I found a bag of Laurentien colored pencils at the thrift store. Some of them have the white label (like all the Laurentien pencils I had see before) and some other don't and have the word Studio. Are the later legit?
Hi all,
I am a beginner, and my neighbour gave a box of 64 Prismacolor Scholar pencil from when she was a child (I guess from the 90s or so). Picture attached.
I am so new that I can't tell whether they are good quality or not. What are your thoughts? How do they compare with Prismacolor Premier and student grade brands such as Faber Castell Black edition, Kalour, etc?
I am just curious. I could afford the Premier or Polychromos pencils but I live in a very small place so I want to limit my art supplies to what I use a lot. If I bought a better quality set of pencils, then the Scholar pencils would have to go LOL
Thanks!
