NYC → Westchester for the Schools: Was It Actually Worth It?

Hi! I’d love to hear some honest experiences from families who moved from NYC to Westchester mainly for the public schools.

Our daughter is 5 and starting kindergarten in NYC this September. We didn’t get into any of the schools close to our home, and after going through the lottery/admissions process, my husband and I have started seriously considering moving to Westchester — maybe next year or sometime in the near future.

The truth is, the only reason we would leave NYC is for our daughter’s education.
I love city life. I’ve spent essentially my whole life in the city, I don’t drive, and I’ve never lived in the suburbs. I love being able to walk everywhere, the diversity, restaurants, activities, and just having everything around us.

So I think my biggest question is: Is the difference in the quality of public education between NYC and Westchester really as significant as people make it sound?

For those who actually made the move for schools, do you feel like your child is getting a noticeably better educational experience — not just higher test scores or a “better” district on paper, but better teachers, resources, class sizes, enrichment, individual attention, and overall school experience?

We’re also a POC family, so diversity and feeling comfortable in the community matter to us as well. I’d especially love to hear from POC families about which towns have felt genuinely diverse and welcoming.

I’d really appreciate both positive and negative experiences. I’m trying to understand whether moving to Westchester for the schools is actually worth the lifestyle trade-off, especially for someone who really loves living in NYC.

Can I skip the last leg of my itinerary without issues?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone has firsthand experience with this.

I have a **one-way Korean Air ticket** from **JFK → ICN → KIX (Osaka)** on a single reservation.

Our plans have changed, and instead of continuing to Osaka, we’re thinking of **ending our trip in Seoul (ICN)** and simply not taking the final ICN → KIX flight.

Here are the details:
One-way ticket only (no return on this reservation)
The ICN → KIX flight is the **last segment**
No checked baggage (carry-on only)
I’m a Korean citizen
My husband and daughter are U.S. citizens and are eligible to enter Korea

Our return flight to the U.S. is on **a completely separate Asiana reservation**

I’m **not concerned about getting a refund** for the ICN → KIX segment. I’m just wondering if there are any consequences for simply not boarding the last flight.
Has anyone actually done this with Korean Air?
Specifically:
Were you able to enter Korea without any issues?
Did Korean Air charge any no-show fee afterward?
Did you experience any problems with your SkyPass account or future travel?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone with actual experience. Thanks!

Parent involvement with 4.5 year old

Working mom here with a 4.5-year-old and I’m curious how involved other parents are during bedtime.
Our routine starts around 7:00 pm. We do a 10–15 minute bath, then lotion and pajamas. My daughter can technically put on her own pajamas, but it’s difficult in the bathroom so I usually help. Then I dry her hair while she brushes her teeth (or vice versa depending on the night), we read 2–3 books, and I stay with her until she falls asleep. Most nights she’s asleep around 8:30.
What I’m struggling with isn’t the routine itself, but how exhausted and frustrated I feel during it. She’s a very active kid who talks, wiggles, and moves constantly, and after a full workday I find myself getting annoyed over little things. For example, tonight I wanted to dry her hair before brushing teeth, she wanted to brush first, ignored me, and I got much angrier than the situation probably deserved.
This is basically my only dedicated 1:1 time with her during weekdays, so I want it to feel positive and connected instead of stressful.
For those with kids around this age:
How much are you still helping with bedtime?
Do you stay until they fall asleep?
How long does bedtime take?
Have you found ways to make the routine smoother without turning it into a battle?
Would love to hear what is typical and what has worked for your family.
