Making the Most of Instant Book Tutoring

Instant Book tutoring is fine when you need help with a last-minute assignment or a final review before an important quiz, test, or exam. However, certain types of tutoring are not ideally suited for Instant Book, such as preparing for a standardized test. This type of tutoring requires time for assessment of a student’s skills and preparation of lesson materials to address the student’s specific needs.

Do you want a tutor who enters into a lesson unprepared and ill-equipped to help you? Do you want to lose valuable lesson time while the tutor has to search for relevant material? A good tutor comes to each lesson organized and prepared in order to maximize the time for which you are paying.

To do this, though, the tutor needs help from you. Tutoring is a partnership and requires cooperation from both parties. When students give tutors enough advance notice, that allows us time to determine what your specific needs are and present a structured lesson plan that ensures you have the best tutoring experience possible.

When that doesn’t occur, students often leave the lesson disappointed, dissatisfied, and disillusioned. Because their needs have been unfulfiled, students are then more likely to leave negative feedback which can adversely affect the tutor’s standing. As a result, no one benefits.

Unfortunately, there are a few bad actors who deliberately do this to try to get a free lesson, either by invoking Wyzant’s Good Fit Guarantee, or by banking on the tutor offering a refund to avoid receiving a negative rating or review. Please note that Wyzant monitors this type of activity and will act accordingly, up to and including deactivating your account.

I do not say all of this to discourage students from utilizing Instant Book tutoring. It has many benefits to both students and tutors. There are some tutors who are able to meet impromptu with students and still deliver outstanding results. However, tutors don’t work on-call and have obligations outside of tutoring. Let’s all work together to ensure a positive outcome.

Important Note about Wyzant's Instant Book Tutoring

I am unsure if students are aware of this, but when you look at a tutor's Wyzant profile, there are two different sections listing their availability. At the top, you will see "Instant Book." Not all tutors have this feature enabled on their profile. For those that do, you can schedule an immediate lesson with them, anywhere from 30 minutes to 72 hours in advance.

If you scroll down a little farther, you will see "Schedule." This lists the tutor's general hours of availability. Even though a tutor might not have any Instant Book hours listed, it does not mean that they are unavailable for tutoring. I am not sure that Wyzant has made this explicitly clear, either intentionally or unintentionally.

I have had many students tell me that they do not see any available hours on my profile, and I have to inform them that I do not have any Instant Book hours available, but I am available for tutoring. If you ever have any doubts, you can always message a tutor to ask about their specific availability. I hope you find this information helpful!

Just a few minutes ago, this go**amn commercial was on 3 consecutive stations at the same time. All of the over-the-air stations like Court TV, MeTV, etc. play this ad every other commercial break. It has to stop!

Years ago, after so much angst from viewers about how often the movie was aired, it was stipulated that "It's A Wonderful Life" could only be played once per year during the holidays. A similar campaign needs to be waged against this crap!

I tend to be distrusting of them, because I know for certain that some apartments offer incentives to leave positive reviews, and others actually submit fake reviews by family and friends of the leasing office.

I do not offer free tutoring, and I understand that might not be for everyone. What I have observed in my decade as a tutor is that a lot of people do not struggle with the ASVAB or any standardized test because they are “bad at math” or “don’t know a lot of words." They struggle to pass because they have never been shown test strategies that are easy and quick to assimilate.

This includes:

* Managing your time wisely on each section

* Knowing which sections actually impact your score the most

* Using process of elimination to get rid of wrong answers quickly

* Answering math problems faster without solving them or relying on a calculator

These strategies are what I teach to students.

If you are just looking to get familiar with the test, then there is plenty of free information available online, and that is a great place to start. However, if you are serious about raising your score quickly and significantly, then that is where I can help. No matter what your goal is, I wish you good luck!
