How to use Wyzant as a student

For anyone using Wyzant to connect with a tutor, please keep these things in mind:

  1. You cannot book a lesson with a tutor unless you have active payment info on file with Wyzant. Tutors are not allowed to book a lesson or exchange contact info with you if you do not.

  2. The "suggested time for first lesson" does not constitute a booking. You must confirm the date and time of the proposed lesson with the tutor.

  3. Instant Book tutoring hours are not the only available hours that a tutor has. Some tutors do not opt into Instant Tutoring, at all, so inquire about their exact availability.

  4. Make certain that you enter the correct subject when requesting a lesson with a tutor, especially an Instant Book lesson. Most tutors specialize in certain subjects and are not a jack-of-all trades.

  5. It's a good idea to log into your scheduled session a few minutes early to test your equipment and address any potential glitches. This way, you don't waste valuable instruction time.

  6. Make certain that you are familiar with, and consent to, a tutor's cancellation policy. If the tutor has posted this policy and shared it with you, then trying to dispute a cancellation fee is futile.

  7. If you do not regularly check your Wyzant messages, share some other contact info with your tutor, e.g., email or phone number. Wyzant messages have been known to crash or lose messages.

  8. Most tutors work with more than one student, so please be considerate of others. Most tutors only have a few hours weekly to devote to each student, and no-shows are a huge inconvenience.

Wyzant is a very good tutoring platform that connects students with a diverse array of tutors. While no platform is perfect, let's all work together to make it the best that it can be!

To decline or not to decline, that is the question

I know opinions on this vary, but I am curious about how others feel about new students seeking to "cram" right before a test. I'm not referring to someone with whom you have established a working relationship, but a brand new student who asks to meet several times a few days before a test.

What's included with vacation prize packages

On yesterday's episode, someone had an opportunity to win a 15-day trip, and the prize package included 33 meals. By my math, that's a little more than 2 meals per day. Is it normal for all 3 meals not to be included for each day of a trip?

Have they added a new character to these awful Progressive ads?

This is the same lady who appeared in the ad with Flo, and she didn't know what a vacation was. This one is infinitely worse.

Our city is choosing a dog park over a homeless shelter

This is an actual social media post by one of our local councilmen:

"Good morning Im a dog lover and a great city is one that creates spaces for every member of the family including our four-legged friends.

Dog parks do more than give pets a place to play. They bring neighbors together, encourage healthy and active lifestyles, promote responsible pet ownership, and create opportunities for families to connect. They also help attract new residents and visitors while supporting local businesses like pet stores, groomers, and veterinarians...we should continue investing in amenities that improve quality of life for everyone. A modern dog park with walking trails, agility equipment, shaded seating, water stations, and space for community events could become another destination our residents are proud to enjoy.

Healthy pets. Healthy people. Stronger neighborhoods. That’s how we continue moving Newport News forward."

For nearly 20 years, our city has lacked a year-round homeless shelter for unhoused individuals, but at least one of our elected officials thinks that this is a more pressing issue. Meanwhile, there have been several people and pets attacked in recent years by off-leash dogs.

Cue the Sam Cooke record, because "a change is gonna come." It's time to remove people like this from office.

Dogs are inexplicably being used to market home improvement services

There is a local home improvement company that is running an ad that shows two separate clips of a dog staring at the new bath bench installed in a new bath/shower addition. What does a dog have to do with this, at all? That has to be one of the dumbest ads I've seen in a long time.

The Tutoring Expert

If you are preparing for a standardized test, consider this information from The Tutoring Expert, Inc.:

For most students, meeting every day with a tutor for test prep is not recommended. The standard and highly effective approach is meeting 1 to 2 times per week for 1 to 1.5 hours per session. This allows time for independent practice, which is vital for long-term retention.

The brain needs time to process and assimilate new material. Back-to-back, high-intensity cramming often leads to diminishing returns and mental fatigue. Staring at exam material for hours daily can cause severe test anxiety and burnout before test day.

Relying on a tutor to walk you through every problem can hinder your ability to become an independent learner. "Crash courses" right before a test date work best for students who already have a strong grasp of the content but need a rapid, focused review.

To optimize your preparation, consider the following best practices:

  • Start with an official practice test to identify your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Meet with a tutor 1-2 times weekly to learn strategies and review mistakes.
  • Spend the off-days actively drilling problems.

How do you filter potential students?

Are there certain red flags that prompt you to decline a tutoring request? Is there a particular price floor that you find helpful to weed out students who are not really serious about tutoring? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The networks are helping to perpetuate this dog nuttery

ABC News just spent as much, if not more time, talking about a dog being pulled from the Venezuelan earthquake rubble as they did talking about the 18-day old infant who was rescued. I think the latter is more newsworthy than the former.

Did you find the iPrep course helpful?

On the iPrep website, it says that the $49.95 course includes 60 practice tests. Are these 60 full length practice tests contain both the math and reading sections?

The website also says that the subscription provides you with access to the material for 30 days. Are you able to print out the tests during this period? Thank you!

Unrestrained dogs present a personal safety risk to tenants

Is this normal behavior? My neighbors left their door ajar while the dogs were inside unrestrained. When I opened my door, I heard at least one of the dogs bark right near the door's threshold. I had to walk past the door, and thankfully, the dogs didn't barrel outside.

These dogs have displayed signs of territorial aggression ever since these people moved here. They bark, growl, and snarl every time someone approaches their door, and my door is adjacent to theirs. They also react whenever someone is in the hall or coming off the lift.

There's no specific language in the lease about this, but I wonder if this would be considered a violation. It certainly seems unsafe. In addition to this, they also occasionally allow the dogs to run down the hallway unleashed.

Greedy apartment managers are enabling dog nutters

Lately, I have been noticing that apartment complexes have been listing a 100-lb weight limit for pets. When did this start happening? The largest I used to see was 75 lb. The lowest was 25 lb. I don't think any animal that weights 100 lb should be in a communal living space.
