Is it better to split chapters that are around 4,000 to 6,000 words long?

Hello Royal Road readers, I wanted to ask you something. Do stories that usually have around 4,000 to 5,500 words per chapter tend to be less attractive, or do you prefer shorter chapters? I’m asking because the chapters in my story are approximately that length, and I’m considering reducing them. Also, sometimes a single chapter has at least 2 or 3 events (for example, one event with the protagonist, another involving the enemies, and another with secondary but important characters). But if it’s better to separate them, I’m considering that possibility if it could bring some advantage.

Do you think I should consider my story dead?

Dark fantasy / grimdark +18

105k words

27 chapters

4 followers (most of them are people trying to offer services)

Zero reviews

Zero comments (except for people offering services)

Zero interaction that tells me someone is actually following it

A lot of views, but I think that’s normal. Besides, I was told most of them are probably bots.

Do you think I should consider my story as something that just didn’t work for this platform? Or maybe it simply doesn’t hook people?

I wanted to hear your opinions.

When searching for new series in Latest Updates, do you usually read the newly published chapter even if you don’t know the synopsis or the first chapter?

Hello,

I have a question for readers out of curiosity.

When searching for new series in Latest Updates, if you find a series that catches your attention, does anyone sometimes — not always — read the published chapter even if you haven’t read the story or even the synopsis?

I mean, just to check the chapter and see how the story is progressing at that point, look at the prose, see what it’s like, and then afterwards go to the story itself to really get into it.

It’s just a question out of curiosity, nothing more.

I Managed to Reach 100,000 Words

Hello,

I wanted to express how excited I am because I managed to surpass 100,000 words. Maybe that’s not a lot for some people, but for me it means a lot, and even though I still have a long way to go, I’m happy to have achieved it. It feels like a personal milestone. I don’t know if anyone else felt the same way the first time they managed to reach 100,000 words. ^^

How Do You Share Maps and Illustrations?

Hello

How do you usually share maps or illustrations? I mean, only in case you’d like to use them. Do you upload them as images? Can you also share links, for example from Drive or image-hosting sites?

Though I’m mainly referring to maps.

Thoughts on multi-POV stories and slow-burn pacing?

I wanted to know your thoughts on stories with multiple plotlines. I'm talking about narratives that feature segments focused on the protagonist, followed by segments for other important characters, then the enemies, and so on—multiple subplots that, while being different threads, are all connected to the main arc.

I’ve been writing a web novel published on RR (Royal Road) and other platforms where I use multiple perspectives alongside the protagonist's main journey. While I believe everything is vital for the plot and character development, I feel it has made the pacing steady but not "fast," turning it into a "slow burn" that requires patience. I sometimes worry this could be a double-edged sword because it might not grab the attention of readers looking for short-term action.

So, I’m asking both writers and readers:

To writers: Do you use this same structure in your novels?

To readers: Would you pick up a story with multiple plotlines even if it becomes a slow-burn buildup?

What's your "sweet spot" for word count?

Hi everyone!

I wanted to pick your brains: at what point (word count or page count) do you usually decide to dive into a story? Do you generally prefer short or long reads?

I’m about to hit the 100k word mark and I’m trying to gauge if that’s considered "a lot," "not enough," or just right for a reader on RR. Thanks!

Did your story end up much longer than you expected?

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re doing well. I just wanted to get your opinion on the length of your stories and how much they ended up growing compared to what you originally projected.

I’ll explain my case so my point is clearer.

I have my whole story in draft form, meaning I have groups of events or semi-developed chapters that are not fully polished or deeply detailed yet. In that sense, the entire story is already planned out.

However, once I started expanding the execution and adding more detail, the story grew a lot more than I expected. Officially, I’m currently at almost 100,000 words, and I feel like I’m only about 65–70% through Volume 1. This doesn’t even include the other four volumes I still have planned to finish the full story.

In short, I knew my story would get longer once I started polishing it, but I didn’t expect it to grow this much. Unfortunately, my story is a slow burn and has several plotlines running in parallel to the main one, so maybe that’s why the pacing moves forward, but not very quickly.

I try not to leave loose ends, and I also want events to have proper weight, which I think makes everything expand even more.

Once it’s finished, I’ll probably see if I can condense it a bit.

Anyway, I wanted to ask: has this happened to you too? Have your stories ended up much longer than you originally expected? And how many words do you think your story will have by the time it’s finished?

Hi, everyone. I have a question for those of you who write: how do you organize and develop your stories?

I’m asking out of curiosity, to see how other people handle that process and maybe find an interesting idea I could adopt for my own tools.

In my case, my story is quite broad: it has a lot of politics, houses, entities, multiple narrative threads, and so on. Because of that, I organize it in a Google spreadsheet, kind of like Excel for those who may not be familiar with it. There, for example, I have one sheet for worldbuilding, another for houses, another for character descriptions, another for context, and others for the different stories.

I use all of that as support, and once I’m ready to create the chapter format, I move it over to Word.

That’s how I do it. I’d like to know your methods. Maybe I can find an interesting way to organize myself better. I’d appreciate it.

Hi,

I’m leaving the link to my slow-burn psychological/political thriller story, set in an 18+ grimdark atmosphere:

https://www.inkitt.com/stories/1720178?utm\_source=shared\_ios

I’ll also leave a brief synopsis and a summary of the story’s plot in case anyone wants to dive deeper and see if it catches their interest.

SYNOPSIS:

In a corrupt feudal kingdom, a young woman infiltrated into the heart of power must survive after being turned into an object of the system, while she spies, manipulates alliances, and risks her humanity to help an organization persecuted from the shadows. But the deeper she ventures into the palace, the more she discovers that the true horror does not lie only in the monsters lurking beyond the world… but also in the elites who rule it.

It should be emphasized that this is not light fantasy, heroic fantasy, or LitRPG-style fantasy. Although there is a supernatural atmosphere marked by the presence of cosmic entities in the background, the conflicts unfold and are resolved in a realistic way. There is no healing magic, convenient powers, or supernatural solutions that erase the physical, psychological, or political consequences of the characters’ actions. Violence leaves wounds, decisions come at a cost, and survival depends more on cunning, endurance, and alliances than on any magical intervention.

DEEPER INTRODUCTION:

Reydem is a secret organization that operates from the shadows with a purpose the kingdom knows nothing about: extracting and protecting violet gold, a mineral capable of strengthening the layers that separate human reality from other planes inhabited by hostile entities. To them, this material is not a source of wealth, but the final barrier between Earth and a silent invasion.

However, the kingdom of Rousth patrols its cities and regions in search of threats to its stability. If the Empire were to discover Reydem’s hidden bases or the existence of violet gold, it would exploit the material for political, economic, and military purposes, without understanding — or without wanting to believe — the danger this would bring. The noble houses of Rousth live trapped within their own interests, too blind or too corrupt to accept the truth.

To divert the patrols’ attention, Reydem resorts to sabotage, distractions, and covert operations. But when the risk of discovery increases, one of its members is infiltrated into the heart of power under a brutal identity: a cloth servant. These women are not simple maids; they are figures trained, conditioned, and dehumanized to obey without breaking, treated as useful objects within the noble houses.

From that position, the protagonist gains access to political meetings, secrets, and conversations that other spies could never reach. But the price is devastating. She must endure humiliation, mistreatment, and veiled abuse while remaining silent, serving wine, listening to vital information, and pretending to be nothing more than part of the furniture. To the nobles, she is not a person: she is a decorative presence, an obedient doll over whom they can exert power.

The story focuses on that psychological tension: how much someone can endure when their mission demands that they remain still in the face of degradation, when every secret obtained comes at the cost of losing a part of themselves. This is not only a story of espionage, but a slow descent toward the limits of human endurance, in a world where saving reality may require surviving horrors no one will ever know about.

Hi, I wanted to share a drawing I made myself of my protagonist, along with some AI-remastered variants of her.

I was thinking of making my own illustrations by hand, so I did my best to draw her on my phone using the Penup app.

I wanted to ask: if I were to use one of these as a cover, which one would you recommend? Which one do you think grabs the most attention?

I’m open to receiving opinions, even harsh ones; for example, “none of them work.”

The story is about a woman who infiltrates a kingdom’s palace as a maid in order to leak information that could help her organization, which is being persecuted by them. I mention this so the purpose of the image is understood.

Good morning. In case anyone would be interested in reading an 18+ slow-burn grimdark/dark fantasy story, I’ll leave my story here.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/147629/path-of-darkness-and-light-grimdarkdark-fantasy18/chapter/3011571/chapter-0-the-object

I drew the cover myself. I’m not good at drawing, but I can manage a little. I’m still deciding whether to use the one I made or a slightly remastered version, based on the one I created.

I’ll leave the synopsis below.

SYNOPSIS:

I’ll also leave a few more details in case you prefer to filter by the story’s plot.

I’d appreciate your opinion on whether I should use the original image or the remastered one as the cover.

Hi everyone

I have a question out of curiosity. Do you think there are readers who might follow your story even if they don’t subscribe to it?

I mean, the most common thing is that if a reader is interested, they’ll subscribe. But sometimes, when I see the views on my chapters gradually increasing, it makes me wonder if some of them might be silent readers.

Obviously, not all of them are necessarily real readers. Maybe many are bots. But I’m curious about it. What do you think? Do you think it could be a mix of anonymous readers, casual clicks, and bots?

And regarding the ones who are actual readers, do some of them follow stories anonymously?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask a question. I had already asked something similar before, but this time I want to be more specific.

I have a grimdark story called “Path of Darkness and Light,” and I was checking how to find it through tags. For example, by searching either by the title or only by tags like Fantasy and Grimdark. However, when I search that way, it doesn’t appear in the list of found novels.

After that, I tried using even more specific filters: Grimdark, Original, not part of any series, and Adult. But when I searched again, it still didn’t show up.

So I wanted to ask if any of you know why this might be happening. Is this normal? Maybe I can’t find it because it’s my own story, or is there something I should check?

I would really appreciate your help. And if anyone could try searching for it just to tell me whether it appears for them or not, I’d be grateful.
