Which Linux distro/desktop has the best text rendering for RGWB OLED displays?

I have an ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W OLED monitor with an RGWB subpixel layout.

I'm completely new to Linux, so I'm not very familiar with how Linux handles font/subpixel rendering. I'm considering switching from Windows 11 and would like to know which distro/desktop would be the best choice for this monitor.

On Windows 11, I found that disabling ClearType and using grayscale rendering gives me the cleanest text. However, the text is slightly softer/fuzzier than normal RGB subpixel rendering.

I'm wondering if any Linux distro or desktop environment has better support for unusual OLED subpixel layouts such as RGWB.

Specifically:

  • Does any Linux distro support RGWB subpixel rendering?
  • Is there a better option than grayscale rendering?
  • Does KDE Plasma, GNOME, or another desktop environment handle this better?
  • Are there any patches, experimental font renderers, or configurations that can improve text sharpness on RGWB OLED?
  • If you have an RGWB OLED monitor, what Linux setup gives you the sharpest text?

I'm mainly interested in desktop/UI text rendering, not gaming.

My monitor is 1440p at 125% scaling.

Windows 11 HDR Calibration question

I have an ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W and I'm trying to understand something about HDR calibration
Which value is correct?

If i calibrate the monitor with the win 11 calibration app the maximum brightness test clips at 630 nits, regardless of which HDR mode I use.

However, after installing the official ASUS WHQL monitor driver, Windows shows:

Settings → System → Display → Advanced display → Peak brightness

  • HDR Gaming: 1405 nits
  • HDR Cinema: 1405 nits
  • Console HDR: 1405 nits
  • True Black 500: 617 nits

I've tested this with Adjustable HDR OFF and ON.

So I'm confused about what these numbers actually represent.

Which one is the correct?

  1. Should I run Windows HDR Calibration and use the ~630-nit result in any mode**?**
  2. Or should I leave the ASUS WHQL driver/1405-nit metadata alone and not use Windows HDR Calibration?
  3. Is TB500 at 630 nits correct?
  4. What value should I use when configuring the HDR peak brightness slider in games?

Thanks!

Windows 11 HDR causes YouTube videos to drastically overblow when hovering mouse over seek bar

System Specs:

  • OS: Windows 11 (HDR Enabled)
  • Browser: Happens on all browsers (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
  • Monitor: PG27AQWP-W
  • GPU: RTX 5080 Game Ready drivers v610.88

The Issue:

I have a very specific HDR bug on YouTube. When I am watching an HDR video, the image is completely overblown (blown-out whites) while playing normally.

However, if I hover my mouse over the seek bar preview, the image instantly fixes itself and looks perfectly with proper HDR shading. The moment I move my mouse away, it reverts back to the overblown state.

(I have attached a video as well)

Questions:

  1. Does anyone else experience this exact hover-over-seek-bar glitch?
  2. Is there a fix to force the browser to consistently use the correct color profile without having to hover over the bar?

What I have tried so far:

  • Toggling "Use hardware acceleration" on/off in Chrome/Edge but video seems muted.
  • Reinstalling GPU drivers with DDU.

Thanks in advance!

Tandem Oled text clarity ''FIX''

So I bought a 4th Gen Tandem ASUS OLED PG27AQWP-W monitor about 3 months ago and from the beginning something felt off with text clarity.

I went down the rabbit hole and found out this seems to be a common discussion with OLED panels and non-standard subpixel layouts. I previously used an LG CX TV and never noticed it there (probably because of viewing distance).

I tried a lot of suggestions online (MacType, PureType, different scaling settings, sharpening, etc.) and after a lot of experimenting, what ended up fixing the text “fuzziness / fringing” for me was switching to grayscale rendering.

My current setup:

Windows 11

  • 150% scaling
  • Windows text size: 100%
  • OSD VividPixel: 50
  • OSD Clear Pixel Edge: ON
  • ClearType text: OFF
  • Google Chrome launched with --disable-lcd-text

Change the following values in Registry Editor (Decimal) and restart the PC:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

  • FontSmoothing = 2
  • FontSmoothingGamma = 2200
  • FontSmoothingOrientation = 1
  • FontSmoothingType = 1

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics\DISPLAY1

  • ClearTypeLevel = 0
  • EnhancedContrastLevel = 50
  • GammaLevel = 2200
  • GrayscaleEnhancedContrastLevel = 100
  • PixelStructure = 0
  • TextContrastLevel = 0

This removed the text fuzziness / fringing for me.

Hopefully this helps someone else with the same issue on RGWB / Tandem OLED panels and maybe other OLED panels with non-standard subpixel layouts.

Need help: PG27AQWP-W (RGWB WOLED) text clarity issues on Windows 11

Anyone using the ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W (RGWB WOLED) for desktop use?

I’m trying to improve text clarity on Windows 11 and wanted to compare settings with other owners.
I know this is a gaming monitor (and it’s fantastic), but I also spend time browsing/working.

Current setup:

  • 1440p
  • 150% scaling
  • Windows text size: 100%
  • VividPixel: 50
  • Clear Pixel Edge: ON
  • ClearType text: OFF
  • Chrome launched with --disable-lcd-text
  • PureType with RGWB profile
  • Tried MacType and greyscale font antialiasing as well with no luck

The issue is that text either looks too soft/blurry or too sharp with noticeable white glow/haloing depending on the settings.

Can anyone suggest settings or tweaks that helped on this monitor specifically?

Would appreciate recommendations from people using this monitor or any other Tandem RGWB subpixel layout OLED panel.
