It was a hard-fought match, but in the end I won gg

Sometimes when I do Mario's BLJ, he gets stuck on the stairs and picks up a lot of speed until he goes through the door, but other times he just jumps backward normally and doesn't gain speed. What's the trick to making it happen consistently and quickly? I'm doing it right; I'm pressing A repeatedly while doing the BLJ. Any tips?

I was replaying Mario 64 again yesterday "casually" with 16 stars and I got the idea to do the BLJ in this elevator out of curiosity. I discovered that there were lava particles outside the boundaries under the map and I wondered why they were there? Does anyone understand why?
