Any advice on Maury Mountain?

We are working our way west again from some great rockhounding out east and stopped by Maury for the first time. Not too much advice out there for how to head away from the parking area. Some say go down the hill a few hundred yards. Some say head north east down the hill. There is another, more touch dirt road that has some fresh dug pits on the left when you drive down (gem trails lists it) it's the circled area in the picture. Any tips on finding some tumbler sized surface hunting? Any tips on digging old pits? We found some shards in tailing piles so far. How far down to dig? Dig 1-2 feet or dig deep In dim pits (3-4 feet)? There alot of different layers in different pits. Any stuff to stay away from digging in or dig above or below? Thanks so much!!
