Finally decided on my top 10 favorite records.. would any of these be in your top 10?

My top 10 in no particular order:

Anata - The Conductors Departure

Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity

Dodecahedron - Kwintessens

Martyr - Feeding the Abscess

Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis

Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken..

Fear Factory - Soul of a New Machine

Disgorge - Consume the Forsaken

Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris

Deathspell Omega - The Synarchy of Molten Bones

Listening to metal with 20 years, what a journey it has been. My top 10 get regular spins with me and they're all bangers in my opinion. Can play them all straight through with no skips and they're all very dear to me.

I think it's a pretty eclectic top 10? The majority of them I feel are an outisde the box approach to metal.

Any of my top 10 that would feature in your top 10? Any recommendations for me?

Thanks folks \m/

Early 90's tech death anomaly. Embrionic Death - Stream of Solidarity (1993). FFO Gorguts, Atheist, (early) Atrocity

I stumbled across this demo in my mid teenage years when I was just feasting on whatever weird tech/prog death I could find.

Even when I was giving Gorguts' Obscura regular spins, this demo seemed like a weird fucking thing. It's hard to put it into words - like some monstrous blend of Pestilence Spheres, Atrocity Hallucinations and some Atheist and hints of Obscura in there - and I haven't found a curiosity like it since.

It came out in 1993 which we all know was when death metal bands were tripping over themselves to prog it up. Embrionic Death really threw caution to the wind and went all out with the discordance. I feel like it's more of a musical curiosity for prog death afficionados like myself than actually being something I'd want to listen to regularly.

However, it's definitely one of a kind and anyone who loves all that weird death metal that came out in the early 90's really should be aware of it and give it a spin.

As for Embrionic Death they clearly put the mushrooms away after this EP and now are just a bog standard brutal death metal band.

Albums ahead of their time

Atrocity - Hallucinations gets my vote. Sounds very strange and discordant even for a death metal album, and then you realise that it was released in 1990. Luc Lemay of Gorguts was heavily influenced by this album and its follow up Todessehnsucht (1992) when he was writing The Erosion of Sanity. He was really taken aback by how weird the riffs were for the time - even by today's standards.

The lyrics reflect the grim and harsh soundscape - it's a concept album which follows the brutal and unforgiving life of a woman from her abuse ridden youth up until she succumbs to drug addiction as a young adult.

Atrocity eventually became a symphonic goth metal band surprisingly.

Martyr reissues on Relapse Records

Anyone else stoked for this? Listening on Spotify, I think they did a great job with the remastering.

I remember buying Feeding the Abscess when I was 15 - I was just after discovering Gorguts and other Canadian tech death - and being so blown away that I got a Feeding the Abscess hoody for Christmas. I wore it 'till it started to fall apart.

It's going to be great to rock some Martyr merch again. Will definitely grab the remasters as well.

Metal collabs you didn't know existed

Daniel Mongrain (Martyr) and Matt Heafy (Trivium).

Just been blasting the new Martyr remixes on Spotify - Feeding the Abscess is one of all time top 10 albums - and while perusing Google to find info about the remixes, I stumbled across this nugget:

'Trivium frontman Matt Heafy and guitar virtuoso Daniel Mongrain share a deep collaborative history. Most notably, Mongrain contributed mind-bending guitar work on the 2004 technical death metal album Fractured by Capharnaum, which featured Heafy on lead vocals.'

Also:

'Heafy has openly cited Daniel Mongrain as a massive influence on his rhythmic playing. The unconventional, Chuck Schuldiner/Mongrain-style down-picking pattern (down-down-down-up-down) is a trademark technique Heafy utilized on Trivium tracks like "A Crisis of Revelation'

Although I know Heafy has some fairly distinctive tastes when it comes to metal, I wasn't expecting this.

I feel like Fisher Stevens was in so many of my childhood movies growing up. Where is he now?

Fisher Stevens. Seen here in Short Circut (1986). Can't remember the last film I've seen him in. He seems so familiar. Any other childhood movies other people can remember him in?

Fuck yeah, finally arrived.

Been wanting to add this to the collection for a while! My favorite album from them and probably in my all time top 10.

Anyone else get some tasty merch lately?

I don't care if I sound like an old school troglodyte, or that I should 'lighten up and see the humour in it'. This is just stupid.
