Can I choose a character thats already exerted to make sure they cant ready on their turn? Or only a character im able to exert from a ready position?

Does this Pocahontas gain 1 lore when she quests and then an additional amount of lore from another exerted character, totaling 1+X? Or is it a choice between her single lore or the exerted character?
