I Wish Someone Had Told Me These 10 Things Before Visiting Punta Cana

A lot of people come to Punta Cana thinking the resort is the whole trip. Resorts are great, but many visitors make the same mistakes before they even get settled.

Here are a few I see all the time:

  1. Booking the cheapest excursion without checking reviews.

  2. Buying souvenirs at the airport or resort lobby when prices are usually much higher.

  3. Waiting until the last minute to plan popular activities.

  4. Scheduling excursions every single day instead of leaving time to relax.

  5. Not asking what is actually included in a tour.

  6. Forgetting reef-safe sunscreen and mosquito repellent.

  7. Assuming every beach vendor or operator offers the same quality.

  8. Not bringing small bills for tips.

  9. Overpacking and leaving no space for coffee, rum, chocolate, larimar, or other souvenirs.

  10. Never leaving the resort and missing the local side of the Dominican Republic.

Punta Cana can be an amazing trip if you plan it right. My advice is simple: compare options, read recent reviews, and choose experiences that match your travel style instead of booking whatever is most advertised.

Insider’s Tip: Don’t choose excursions based only on price. Transportation, group size, safety, guide quality, and what’s included can completely change the experience.

What would you add to the list?

The Ultimate Punta Cana Travel Guide (2026) – Excursions, Prices, Safety Tips & AMA

Hi everyone!

I live in Punta Cana and over the years I've helped many visitors plan their vacations, so I thought I'd put together one post with the questions I see most often.

Here are a few quick tips:

• Don't book the first excursion you're offered on the beach. Compare your options first.

• If you're buying souvenirs, airport and resort gift shops are usually the most expensive places. Local stores often have better prices and a much larger selection.

• Most excursions include hotel transportation, so always ask before paying for a taxi.

• If it's your first visit, Saona Island is one of the most recommended experiences. If you're looking for something unique, ScubaDoo is another favorite because no scuba certification is required.

• Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and small bills for tips.

If you're planning a trip and have questions about resorts, transportation, excursions, shopping, restaurants, or anything else, leave a comment below. I'll do my best to give honest advice and help you avoid common tourist mistakes.

I check Reddit regularly, so I'll keep answering questions as they come in.
