A Taste of the Dominican Republic with a Purpose 🇩🇴

Hello everyone,
Last year, our family had to relocate unexpectedly to my home country Dominican Republic (Punta Cana). Since then, I’ve been rebuilding while supporting my 15 year old daughter Aileen and my 17 year old daughter, Aimee, who has just achieved something incredible.
Aimee is graduating with honors this May and has been awarded the prestigious QuestBridge Scholarship, a life changing opportunity earned through years of hard work, discipline, and excellence.
While her tuition is covered, I’m currently working to cover the costs of her travel, relocation, and essential items for her transition into college, which is almost impossible on Dominican Republic’s salaries.
So I’m doing what I do best.
I’m offering authentic homemade Dominican lunches, dinners, and poolside BBQ experiences for visitors who want a real, local culinary experience.
You can dine in my home for a warm, intimate setting, or I can bring the experience to your resort or hotel if you are not on an all-inclusive plan.
Every booking directly supports Aimee’s next chapter.
If you’re visiting and want to enjoy real Dominican flavors while being part of something meaningful, I would love to host you.
Message me for menu options and availability.
Thank you 💛

So many bad reviews

We are headed to Punta Cana in a few weeks. I’m reading a lot of negative reviews about the food hygiene and people getting E. coli and other nasty bugs. Am I being paranoid or should I find another destination where I won’t poop my brains out all week.

Also, I’ve been once before a few years ago. No issues that time and I even accidentally brushed my teeth with the sink water the first day…

Looking for all-inclusive recommendations in Punta Cana (early July, chill vibes, sargassum concerns)

My boyfriend and I are planning a week in Punta Cana in early July and would love some resort recommendations. We're pretty low-key, the whole plan is to spend our days on the beach and in the sea, drink, and do absolutely nothing. Not looking for a party scene at all.

A few things that matter most to us:

- Direct beach access with calm, swimmable water (sandy, not rocky)

- Chill atmosphere, couples-friendly, relaxed, not a Spring Break vibe, no kids

- Sargassum management : this is our biggest concern honestly. Does the resort do daily cleanup? Barriers in the water? How bad was it when you went?

Food poisoning, you've been warned.

Wanted to share my experience this past winter on my first trip to Punta Cana. After looking forward to a well deserved vacation with my wife and 2 young daughters, ages 4 and 6. We decided to stay at Catalonia Bávaro in Punta Cana. Unfortunately my 6 year old and myself came down with food poisoning at this resort. I found it pretty odd how this resort had an on-site Doctor at the resort with full medical clinic. I can go on and on about my experience but I feel like others need to know if I could help out any unsuspecting families with younger kids.

Punta cana bachelorette trip

Hello everyone,

Just curious what you recommend doing if a group of girls wants to go on a bachelorette trip in Punta Cana? Should we stay at the Airbnb or a hotel? We do plan to go on excursions, but we are just confused. What is the correct way of feeling safe, but also able to do a lot?

Please leave any recommendations for names of hotels, Airbnbs, & excursions.

Riu Republica

Is there any way you can get sex at the resort without bringing prostitutes inside? Like paying housekeeping for sex or pay extra at massage for full service?
Anyone had any experience?

Punta Cana Airport transfers

Hello all,

In March 2026 we went to Bahia Principe Luxury Ambar and loved the experience, except for the transfer from airport to resort. Getting through customs was easy, as was getting out of the airport. However trying to get someone to get us our shuttle was a nightmare. We had an Amstar private shuttle booked and it took over an hour and a half to get an Amstar worker to even acknowledge us. There were probably 20 Amstar reps working the shuttles. They were overwhelmed with people trying to leave and just kept trying to push people further and further down the line, until there was no one to help us. Not a single worker wanted to help, wouldn’t even acknowledge you except to tell you to keep moving. We just stuck around one Amstar worker in hopes that he would eventually acknowledge us and get us a transfer, and it worked but it took forever.

To their credit, there was construction going on which made it hard for the shuttles to get to the area. We were thinking of coming back in December 2026, will the construction be done by then? Has anyone else had this experience at the Punta Cana airport? How is it normally?

Uber from airport to resort

Hey,

We have upcoming trip from la romana airport to secrets. We were looking for the transportation option but the resort is charging 150 something for 2 people.

We arrive at la romana airport and departing from Punta cana airport so round trip is not something that we can do.

Has any one been to Punta cana or la romana and booked Uber?

Is it safe to book Uber or any other suggestion?

Vegetarian travelers at a resort

Hi!

I'm going on vacation to Bahia principe Resort in punta Cana soon.

I've never traveled before so I just wanted some recommendations, specifically because me and my partner don't eat meat.

I've heard about not drinking water unless it's bottled. And don't eat lettuce or some fruits? I'm curious about what precautions to take or if it may be mandatory as a vegetarian to get some stomach medicine before my trip because we are usually prone to eating fruits and veggies wherever we go because options are often slim.

Any advice id be thankful for, thanks everyone!

Real Estate Agent Recommendations for Punta Cana (for Canadian Buyers)

NOT looking for Self-Recommendations.

Looking for recommendations from fellow Canadians who have purchased property in Punta Cana and would recommend the Real Estate Agent they used for the transaction (and why you would recommend this agent).

We are considering a pre-construction condo (which I know is risky in itself), and are hoping to meet a trustworthy RE Agent who is familiar with international buyers and work with Novel and Gesproin.

Our Spanish is very basic (but we plan on taking lessons!), so someone who speaks English fluently is key.

Iberostar Selection Bavaro Suites Upgrade

Does anyone have experience upgrading from the Selection Bavaro suites to the Joia Bavaro suites? I am going there next month and realized we booked Selection instead of Joia, really just want access to the adults only section of the resort. Would be super helpful if anyone had insight on cost/how hard it is to get the upgrade!

All-inclusive vs. booking separately

This is the travel debate I have with myself every single time I plan a trip.

All-inclusive sounds like the obvious budget move but you’re paying for meals you might skip, drinks you might not finish, and a resort you’ll feel pressure to stay on because you already paid for everything there. I am all about getting my money’s worth. If I bought a ticket to an amusement park for $80 and only stayed three hours, that's almost $27 an hour when you look at the full picture. All-inclusive works the same way. If you’re not using everything included you’re just paying for the idea of it.

Booking separately requires a bit more thought. If you’re eating out every meal without a plan you’ll spend more. But you’re also eating at genuinely good restaurants instead of resort buffets. And when it comes to food, I like to do heavy research into what’s truly a hidden gem and has great reviews.

I think it depends on how much brain power you’re wanting to use and your pickiness level. If you’re open to any experience and looking for an easy, laid back trip without a lot of thought since everything is there for you, go all-inclusive. If you’re a bit more particular (like myself) booking separately is the way to go. It takes more thought but you know every single detail is something you’ll enjoy and you don’t feel like you’ve wasted your money.

At Iberostar Selections Bavaro Suites

What is the difference between the regular junior suites and the junior suites tropical view and ocean view? Obviously the last two have views but what is the difference from the regular? Additionally, are there reservation limits? I've seen that there are restaurant reservation limits at their other resorts.

Breathless- The entertainment is sad. If you are looking for entertainment, this is not your place.

Spent 5 days at Breathless, the review -

Food - French restaurant is great, salmon and duck were highlights.
Breakfast was at Spoon and it serves a diverse range of cuisine- Omlet station was amazing, Grill next to beach has great burgers and pizzas. Icecream was a disappointment. Silk city hibachi is my favourite- Get it reserved though.
Other restaurants were a miss.

Service - Room service is very slow- Even though I was in Xhale. The food is in the room in 45 minutes but you have to wait a long time for getting the fridge stocked or getting any other amenities.

Pool - Clean and well maintained pools close at 6 pm. No entertainment at all which is very boring. The DJ dont do anything and just same youtube videos. Absolutely a disaster.

Beach - Great work on removing the weeds from beach , we swam in the beach and the towels are easily available. Service is good with respect to drinks.

45 mins from airport - Shuttle pick up and drop - No issues at all.

If you want to lie down and eat good food - This is a good resort.
If you want to have fun and get entertainment- Breathless is not the Place.

Cheaper but nice all inclusive resorts

Looking for an all inclusive resort for two people that wouldn't go over about a $2500 budget for a flight and hotel package for 5-6 nights. I'm essentially looking for something that's not top tier luxury but still good food, beach, and service. I've stayed at two iberostar hotels in the past but many years ago so I don't remember much other than that I did like them. Are those still highly reccomended resorts? Is there anything new I should try?

first time

Hi everybody!!! In a few weeks I’ll be going to Punta Cana for my first time and technically my first time out of the country (been to Puerto Rico and loved it but it doesn’t count lol). My friends and I are staying at Bahia Principe Luxury Ambar and I was looking for some tips/recommendations!

How did you guys handle showering/getting drinks with ice? I’ve heard so many horror stories about people getting sick and vomiting from the water there. I’m a huge emetophobe and honestly this is my biggest fear LOL. I already know to brush my teeth with bottled water and keep my mouth closed in the shower, so is there anything else I should do?

Excursions — are there any that you HIGHLY recommend? We definitely want to go on a boat while we’re there but are open to anything.

Has anybody stayed at this exact resort? Anything you recommend restaurant wise or just in general?

Also besides cute outfits/swimsuits, what are some travel essentials you guys recommend packing that people don’t think about until they get there? 😂

Thanks so much in advance 😊

Quiet Nice Spots and Photographers

Hello

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Punta Cana next year around this time and will be staying at the Caribe Deluxe Princess. I am planning to propose while we are there and am trying to find nice picturesque spots that don't have a lot of foot traffic. Any recommendations?

I also need a photographer to capture the occasion if anyone has any suggestions

Thanks
