Is paper-trading worth it?

I have seen people say to practice paper-trading online, but others say it's no different than taking a small sum ($50) and just investing that. Paper-trading just delays your time in the market. Is this true? If I am nervous and starting with $500 should I practice paper-trading first or just jump in?

Anyone here ever play versions that aren't Hold'em competitively?

What are the best versions that either require less players, or diff strats. Any of them still competitive on the pro scene? Any versions that historically less-skilled players play and a Hold'em player can leverage that skill differential?
