I just got my UCAT score - now what?

That time of the year has come. I wanted to drop some aftermath tips to help anyone out, or if someone is just looking for something to connect with:

  • You might leave it feeling like you didn't do as well as you could
    • Most people do feel this way but that doesn't mean you tanked it. Remember to breathe these feelings out

  • When you see your score it could go one of three ways
    • You did great!
      • If this happens then GO YOU. GO CELEBRATE! JUMP AROUND AND BE HAPPY! TELL SOMEONE YOU TRUST!
      • Remember to take this as motivation to keep the hard work going at school!
      • Try not to let this turn into pressure to remain perfect, this just opens more options for you!
    • You did okay… but it is bordering getting or not getting an offer
      • If this happens, let it out. Cry, worry, contemplate, whatever you need to do.
      • This definitely doesn't mean your out of the game, it just means you need to be a little more strategic
      • Work hard at your ATAR especially your exams as it can act as a huge lever. I was personally in this position and the pressure of getting a good ATAR for the sake of it helped me more than I could have ever known
    • You didn't do well
      • If this happens, let it happen. Scream, cry, lament over what could have been, but just know, nothing was wasted. Skills you gain from UCAT prep are invaluable, such as time management, reading text quickly, quick outside of the box thinking, these will help you for the rest of the school year as well !!
      • The only thing this closes off are some medicine and dentistry courses next year, there are many other wonderful options open, such as other dentistry courses, physiotherapy, optometry and of course the postgraduate options. They may not be your ideal choice, but gameplans have to be tweaked sometimes
      • Many good doctors actually don't get into medical school the first try, one UCAT result does not entail your worth
      • It is important that you don't let your ATAR slip as this could open other doors, and even perhaps the chance for a gap year which is worth considering

Regardless of what outcome you get, the UCAT does not remain a verdict on your future. It may change the way you approach the next 2 or 3 years, but you still have a very long life to live and you can definitely be successful

"what atar will i get" - some words of hope

i am seeing a lot of these types of posts recently. i know it has been said many times, but we really can not tell you from your sac scores. every school will have different moderations and you still have halfway to go, so anything could happen.

but then again i cant blame y'all for wanting to know, but the truth is you just cant really know, nobody can predict the future. I know its stressful and i know you want to know how "cooked" you are so you can adjust your effort, but in the end its about showing up consistently.

Try and do the best you can for your sacs. yes some sacs might be sloppier, some weeks preparation will feel very difficult, but to show up to your sacs and do the best you feel like you can, that is the best thing you can do for your atar. like really anybody can do well or at least do better than you feel you may be doing right now. i guarantee youve learnt a lot from these past one and a half terms and so its time to put all the newly acquired knowledge to practice! i believe in you guys!! focus on improvement, not perfection. its "how can i maximise the amount of marks i am achieving today" instead of "OMG IM GONNA FAIL I DONT KNOW ANYTHING PROPERLY.' Clearly, the former is gonna help you a lot more

but dont suppress your emotions either. you're allowed to feel stressed and scared before sacs, before getting back results, but we definitely want to capitalise on a growth mindset, especially if you want to do well :)

stressing about something you just can't know is not going to help too much. during exam period, just focusing on one exam at a time, leaving behind the exams i had done and forgetting the ones i had coming, that honestly really helped me increase my performance, and when i was busy worrying about whether i would get goal atar or not, i realised it really did tank my performance.

one step at a time guys, youve made it this far and you have so much potential to grow. good luck to all of you, true warriors!!
