Urgent help needed for my sister, SJS survivor looking for medical assistance in Durban or North KZN

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out here because our family genuinely doesn't know where else to turn right now.

My sister is a Stevens-Johnson syndrome survivor. She fought incredibly hard for her life, and by the grace of God, with the help of some amazing doctors, nurses, practitioners and our family, she survived. A huge part of that journey was at Life Ballito Hospital, where she received incredible care.

Unfortunately, the treatment and everything that came with it depleted her medical aid, and with the financial strain our family has been under, she can no longer afford the medical cover she previously had.

Today, she started experiencing what appears to be some kind of reaction again. She is extremely scared and understandably panicking, and honestly, so are we. Given what she has already been through with SJS, we don't want to assume it's nothing or wait until it becomes something serious.

She posted about what she's experiencing today, and I think it explains the situation much better than I ever could:

We are urgently trying to find somewhere she can be assessed and treated through the public healthcare system, or anyone in Durban who may be able to point us towards the right hospital, dermatologist, practitioner or facility that can help.

If anyone has experience with SJS, works in healthcare, knows of a public hospital with the appropriate services, or simply knows someone we should speak to, please comment or DM me.

We're just desperately trying to find the right medical help for her before this potentially becomes something much worse.

If you can share this, even within your own WhatsApp groups or with someone in the medical field, we'd be incredibly grateful.

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read this

Can South Africa help me find my next opportunity?

Hi everyone,

I don't usually ask strangers for help, but I've reached the point where pride has to take a back seat because finding work has become urgent.

I'm currently unemployed and, if I'm being honest, I'm starting to run out of options.

Life threw me a few curveballs over the last year, and overnight my priorities changed. These days I'm trying to keep the lights on, make sure there's food on the table, and convince my younger sibling that I actually have this whole "adulting" thing under control. (Spoiler: I don't...Lol im truly winging it at this point)

The frustrating part is... I'm actually really good at what I do.

I've spent years working remotely with UK and US companies in Customer Success and Operations, helping businesses look after customers, streamline processes, solve problems, and keep things running behind the scenes. I'm the kind of person who genuinely enjoys fixing messy systems and making other people's lives easier. I have gathered at least 5 years of experience in different industries, and im looking for an opportunity ASAP

I've been applying every single day, tweaking my CV, interviewing, learning new tools, and refusing to give up. I've still got my full remote setup ready to go, and if someone gave me the opportunity tomorrow, I'd be online before they'd finished sending the welcome email LOL

So I'm taking one more shot.

If you know of an opportunity in Customer Success, Sales, Operations, Virtual Assistance, Client Management, or literally anything where someone needs a reliable person who can jump in and make things happen, I'd be incredibly grateful if you pointed me in the right direction :)

I've worn quite a few hats over the years, from high-ticket sales calls and face-to-face sales, to customer success, short-term rental operations, client onboarding, and keeping businesses moving behind the scenes. Anything my fellow my brothers and sisters

People from South Ah always have a way of looking out for each other :)

Resume Refresh Help

Hey everyone 👋

This might be a bit of a dumb question lol, but where are you all finding those really clean, ATS-friendly resume templates?

I've decided to completely tear mine down and rebuild it from scratch. I've got a solid background in Customer Success across a few different industries, along with a lot of short-term rental experience working with clients in the UK and the US. I'm from sunny South Africabtw, and I figured if I'm going to refresh my CV, I may as well do it properly.

I've seen some resumes on here that look extremely sharp and modern, but still ATS-friendly, and I'm not sure where people are getting them from.

Any recommendations for templates, websites, or even examples that you've had success with would be massively appreciated (free, of course)

I feel a bit daft even asking, but I'd rather learn from people who've already been through it than go blind sided. 😅

Still knocking on doors... because one of them has to open eventually. 😄

A little while ago, I shared my story here, and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who reached out. The messages, advice and encouragement genuinely meant more than you know.

I promised myself that no matter how rough things got, I'd do something every single day to move the needle. Another application. Another conversation. Another connection. Another chance.

So mates, here I am again.

Don't worry, I won't make you sit through the director's cut of my life story this time. 😂

I'm still dreaming of getting back into remote work. Honestly, I just want to get the ball rolling again. I miss the pace, the people, the organised chaos, and being part of a team that's building something exciting.

Life has been on Legendary Mode this year. It's landed a few proper punches, but quitting isn't really an option🤞. There are younger faces behind me who count on me to keep food on the table, but they also expect me to be the family's unofficial Mood Lifter😅 . Somehow, even on the hard days, I still manage to keep the jokes coming.

I'm based on the sunny side of South Africa, and I know some people might think, "This oke is taking a wild swing at remote work." I promise I'm not. 😄

I've spent over four years working remotely across Customer Success, Operations, Client Onboarding, Virtual Assistance and Short-Term Rental management, working with clients and teams across the UK, the US and beyond. Im talking fast-moving startups, troubleshooting and solving problems? That's my comfort zone.😎

Every week I'm reaching out to new people, taking advice from complete strangers, building connections and doing everything I can to create opportunities. Pride packed its bags a long time ago, and honestly, that's okay.

So if anyone knows of a remote opportunity, a startup that needs someone who can wear multiple hats, a recruiter worth connecting with, or even just a community I should be part of, I'd genuinely love to hear from you.

And if you've made it this far and you're thinking, "Ah, what a load of nonsense..." honestly, my brother or sister, I wouldn't blame you one bit. Everyone's been let down one way or another these days, so I completely get it.

Anyway... that's enough from me. Time to go knock on a few more doors.

Thanks for reading, and I hope something good finds you this week.

Cheers, everyone. ❤️

I figured I'd shoot my shot... worst case, I make a few strangers smile.

Looking for: Remote Customer Success / Operations / Onboarding opportunities
Experience level: Entry to Mid Level (4+ years remote experience)
Location: Sunny South Africa (UTC+2)
Timezone availability: Comfortable working UK, EU and US time zones
Remote status: Fully remote
Salary: Anything at this point, to be fully transaparent :)

Partly because asking strangers for help feels mad awkward, I must say.

Mostly because I've always been the bloke trying to solve everyone else's problems.

But here we are....

This week has been one of those weeks, unfortunately.

I've fired off more job applications than I care to admit, LinkedIn probably thinks we're in some kind of committed relationship, and my CV has had more updates than anything on this earth LOL

So I thought I'd try something different.

One of the things I love most about remote work is that physical location almost stops mattering. I'm based in South Africa, yet over the years I've helped guests check into cottages in the English countryside, supported customers across the US, worked with teams spread over multiple time zones, and somehow made it all feel like a normal Wednesday lol.

It's a strange little world...

But I gotta admit, I genuinely love it.

I'm one of those weird people who thrives in organised chaos.

Fast-moving startup? That's what im into.

So scenarios like, someone starts a meeting with, "We've had a tiny issue..." only for it to turn out the whole system is on fire kinda of thing? Lol

Perfect.

Over the years I've worked across Customer Success, Operations, Client Onboarding, Virtual Assistance and Short-Term Rental management. I've managed UK property portfolios, helped e-commerce businesses grow, supported customers from all over the world, and even been called into high-pressure situations where keeping people calm was just as important as fixing the actual problem.

Apparently my superpower is staying calm while everyone else is looking for the panic button ;)

People usually ask the obvious question.

"So... what happened?"

Life happened.

I lost almost everything trying to save my mum.

I'd make the same decision again tomorrow without a second thought.

Since then, I've found myself carrying responsibilities I never expected to have this young. There are younger faces looking up to me to help keep food on the table, but they also expect me to be chief entertainer, storyteller, quite literally the full time mood lifter lol.

So I make them laugh.

Then every now and then I sneak off somewhere quiet, collect myself, wipe my face, and get back to figuring out how we're going to make tomorrow work.

This has been the hardest chapter of my life.

Financially and emotionally, in just about every way imaginable.

But quitting has never really been my style, so I'm putting this out into the world :)

Maybe nothing comes from it, maybe someone reading this knows someone who's hiring.

Or maybe someone reads this and thinks, "You know what... this bloke sounds like he'd fit in pretty well with our team."

If that's you, I'd genuinely love to have a conversation of some sort.

Whether it's Customer Success, Operations, Onboarding, Virtual Assistance, STR/Hospitality Operations, or honestly any role where reliability, communication and problem-solving matter...Im literally your guy

And if you've read all the way to the end but can't help, don't even stress, my brother or sister. I appreciate you stopping by more than you know. The world is heavy enough already, and everyone is carrying something.

One last thing, though

If you're reading this while fighting a battle nobody else can see, I won't tell you that everything happens for a reason.

Sometimes life is just brutally hard, but show up tomorrow anyway, my friend.

All it takes is one more attempt mate :)

Anyway...

Thanks for listening to a stranger on the internet.

And if you know of a remote opportunity, my inbox is always open.

Cheers, everyone. ❤️

Is hiring a UPS a thing in SA, or am I dreaming? 😂

Hey everyone.

Bit of a random one, but does anyone know if it's possible to hire a UPS or battery backup system instead of buying one outright? I'm in KZN if that makes any difference.

I've been getting quite a few remote work opportunities lately, and with our lovely load shedding and random outages, I'm worried about dropping out of interviews or client calls. 😅

Buying a decent UPS isn't really in the budget right now, so I was wondering if there are companies that rent them out on a weekly or monthly basis, or even somewhere that offers rent-to-own.

Has anyone done something like this before, or am I chasing a unicorn? 😂

Any recommendations or ideas would be hugcouldely appreciated. Cheers!

KZN folks, I need your advice (and maybe a little help) getting started in a new remote role

Title: KZN folks – how do you stay reliable working remote US hours from smaller towns?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get advice from fellow South Africans, especially those in KZN who work remotely.

I’ve recently secured a new remote role working US hours. It’s a client-facing position, so consistency and staying online is absolutely important.

I’m based in Richards Bay, having previously lived in Durban. After a very difficult year personally, I’ve been rebuilding from scratch while also taking care of my younger siblings. This opportunity is a big step for me getting back into stable, long-term work.

The main challenge I’m trying to prepare for is making sure I can stay fully reliable during working hours.

Richards Bay is quite limited when it comes to shared office spaces there’s essentially only one coworking setup I know of, and it’s usually fully booked. I also considered the library as an option, but since I’ll be working US hours and on client calls, it won’t really line up with operating times or the nature of the work.

Power cuts here are generally minimal, but I’d rather be over-prepared than risk dropping a call or affecting client trust.

So I’d love to hear from anyone in a similar setup:

What backup power solutions have worked best for you (UPS, inverter, etc.)?

Any affordable setups that are actually reliable for remote work?

Any underrated workspaces or alternatives in smaller KZN towns?

And just putting it out there — if anyone locally happens to have a UPS system they’re no longer using, I’d also be open to either renting it short-term or buying it if it’s within budget. Just trying to explore all practical options while I get set up properly.

Appreciate any advice, tips, or shared experience. It genuinely helps a lot.

Thanks KZN 🙏

Anyone Have a UPS or Backup Power Solution Available to Rent?

Hi everyone,

I'm starting a new remote role soon and am looking for a UPS, inverter, or portable power station that someone might be willing to rent out for a month or two. I'd also be open to purchasing it after my first paycheck.

It's been a difficult year after losing my mom and relocating to care for my younger family members, but things are finally moving in the right direction. I've managed to rebuild my work setup and secure some remote opportunities. My only concern is the occasional power outages where I live now.

If anyone has a unit they're not currently using, I'd appreciate a chat. Happy to discuss rental terms or a purchase arrangement.

Thanks for reading.

Back to square one and rebuilding, would appreciate any guidance

Life hit reset, KZN lad just sharing a story from the rebuild phase 🇿🇦

Hey everyone,

Not really sure what category this falls under, so I’ll just go with “life update from a slightly scrambled oke trying his best”

Last year knocked me harder than I expected after losing my mom, and since then, it’s honestly felt like a full reset button on life. I’ve just been slowly rebuilding things piece by piece — routine, structure, mindset, all of it.

I’m originally from KZN, spent time in Jozi and the Cape, and I’m currently back in KZN. It’s been a season of getting grounded again and figuring things out step by step.

Work-wise, I’ve had the chance to move through a mix of environments over the years, UK property operations, short-term rental systems, customer success roles with US teams, and coaching/consulting work where I spent a lot of time on calls with international clients and managing fast-moving, communication-heavy setups.

Nothing deep behind this post, just felt like sharing a bit of the journey since Reddit tends to be one of those places where you find random pockets of real people with real perspectives.

If anything, this is just me saying hello from the rebuild phase of life and seeing what conversations come out of it.

Appreciate you reading this far, hope everyone’s having a

Former Kenilworth oke trying to rebuild, reconnect, and get back on his feet

A former Kenilworth oke shooting his shot into the Cape Town universe :)

Well… this is probably the most unorthodox thing I’ve posted in a while, but life has a funny way of humbling you and then telling you to keep moving anyway.

So here goes... "fingers crossed"

Towards the end of last year, life took a very dark turn for me when I lost my mom after fighting unbelievably hard to keep her here. It completely flipped my world upside down. I started this year in a position I honestly never imagined I’d find myself in, mentally drained, financially stretched, and suddenly having to become “the adult in the room” overnight.

That being said… my mother didn’t raise a soft lad lol

So instead of folding, I packed my bags, moved back home to KZN, and have basically been doing whatever honest work I can get my hands on to keep things moving. Some days that’s applications, some days that’s helping people online, and some days that’s full-on hard labour just to make sure the lights stay on and the smaller hands around me still have food on their plates.

And shoutout to all the moms out there because wow… this thing is not for the faint-hearted.

But through a mixture of stubbornness, hard work, and the occasional miracle, I’ve slowly managed to rebuild my little setup again. Laptop sorted. Internet sorted. Headphones back on. Camera on. Hope slowly returning. And now I’m trying to get back to doing what I genuinely love doing, helping people, solving problems, speaking to humans from all over the world, and bringing good energy wherever I land.

Work-wise, I’ve been lucky enough to collect a pretty wild mix of experiences over the years. I’ve helped run UK-based short-term rental operations behind the scenes like an air traffic controller with too many tabs open, worked with clients from all over the world, sourced properties, onboarded customers, and somehow became the lead coach and consultant for one of Europe’s largest Airbnb arbitrage education programs, which basically meant spending my weeks jumping on calls with ambitious people from every corner of the globe trying to build something for themselves.

I’ve also spent a lot of time in customer success and business development roles with US-based companies, where being personable, adaptable, and calm under pressure became second nature. And somewhere along the line, I discovered I genuinely enjoy sales too, especially face-to-face environments where energy matters. Turns out a good conversation and decent confidence can take you surprisingly far in life :)

So I guess this post is simply me saying;
If any Cape Town lads happen to know of remote opportunities, interesting people to connect with, companies hiring, projects needing an extra set of hands, or even just some direction on where a young oke should be putting his energy right now, I’d genuinely appreciate it more than you know.

I’m very open to conversations. Even if it’s just a digital coffee chat and some guidance from people further ahead in life than me. I’m a pretty transparent and easy-going guy, and I’ll happily send through my resume or Loom intro video if anyone wants to put a face to the story.

And if you’ve read this whole thing thinking:
“jeez, this bloke is really freestyling on Reddit today.”
…you’re honestly not wrong lol

But desperate times call for brave posts, I suppose.

Also, for the moderators before I get my head bitten off, although I’m back in KZN now, I actually spent a good chunk of my life in Cape Town as a former Kenilworth resident, studied at University of the Western Cape, and later moved on to University of Cape Town for postgraduate studies, so the city will always feel like home to me in one way or another.

Anyway, hope the city is treating everyone well this weekend, and thanks for hearing a brother out.

Cheers,
Kwanele
