Crop and Claw - A Dragon RPG series

It's no comic, book, or film, so I don't know if it's particularly postworthy here. But it is an adventure-RPG that which stars dragons and there's probably people who want dragon content in general. I'm sure mods will gut it if it's not fit.

We're a small crew making creature-centric games, because the niche desperately needs more stuff. Dragons especially. Most notably here is Crop and Claw which is all about a dragon world.

Crop and Claw 1 is our first game released in 2024. It was a science project to pump out a test game in six months, fashioned after classic NES RPGs a la Dragon Quest 1. It can be a culture shock if you're not used to those kinds of games, but it offers a full adventure if you're willing to stick through it. It's not required to play Crop and Claw 2, and will likely get a remake to inherit all the new features of Crop and Claw 2 and link the games together later. You can also play it on retro gaming handhelds through Portmaster.

Serial of Wend is a between-quel of Crop and Claw 1 and 2, introducing standard party characters in 2. It's also not required reading for CnC2 (assuming I write the game itself properly), but it gives extra background and gives a little more to the world.

Crop and Claw 2 is the significantly more developed sequel, using my custom RPG framework, Gorbash. It's a significantly more involved game, with more complex mechanics and interactions. While CnC1 lets you play as a single dragon, CnC2 lets you play with just the story characters, and allows you to add up to six custom characters, letting you mix and match their species and job. Plenty of replayability when it's all out.

You can find all links on https://cropandclaw.com for the two games, as well as Serial of Wend Acts 1-3, with Act 4 and an edit pass in the works.

Edit: since folks seem to really like this, and creature games in general as a niche, I figure I'd give some spotlight to other devs in this realm that I'm around.

Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe is a Bubble Bobble inspired platformer where you are, in fact, dragons.

Chirax's Fortress is a Yoshi's Island inspired platformer where you are a hydra. Upcoming Virtual Boy dungeon crawler spinoff is in the works under the title of Chirax's Dungeon.

Dragon March has you as a robotic dragon and is amusingly, like the game Snake except way more interesting.

I've got a circle of devs in general that need all the attention they can get under the collective "Hydra Place". Haven't gotten the site all fancied up, but you can follow devs in the circle on Bluesky at this starter pack: https://bsky.app/starter-pack/pyral.dinoleaf.com/3musi3onfce27

Mild scuffing from 13-ish years of being played, like a game console is supposed to be used. The main thing needed is a new circle pad cover as the old one had eventually come off. Running latest 3DS firmware with CFW. For all your perfectly clean homebrew desires. Comes in box with all original manuals and such. As a small bonus, throwing in an old sleeve case from Club Nintendo, although it's not much.

PSP-1000 55$ + Shipping

Must've been from 2004 or so. Aged as you'd expect. Comes with a new Ostent battery as the old one drained very quickly. Has Ark-4 and a 2GB Sony memory card. Charger and case is all there. Haven't run anything in the UMD in maybe 15-20 years, so can't speak for if that works.

Dragon JRPG Crop and Claw 2 demo release (now on Portmaster)

In 2024, we released Crop and Claw, a JRPG written in six months, give or take, and later released for free on Portmaster because the guys at Portmaster are pretty cool (you should still buy it on Steam). After a lot of work, the main framework for the sequel and ultimately for the whole trilogy was made semi-stable. So there's now a public demo on Steam and itch.

It ranges from an hour or two, depending how slow you go. As someone a little steeped in Portmaster's circles, I like to say this is one of the more ambitious games that's developed specifically with Portmaster support and handhelds in mind. You can also make custom characters, though it's even less balanced right now. Everything is rigged to be utilitarian as a demo. The sheer amount of environments means I can't test and guarantee everything works, especially on Panfrost Rocknix, but it should be fine in most places. Android's Nitro mode (for dual screen devices like AYN Thor and RG DS) is still mostly experimental and not quite finished.

I also like to constantly remind devs that if they want to make their games pop, supporting retro handhelds via exporting to both Android and ARM Linux (GLES3.2) is always a good idea. Especially the latter because making games run on lower spec machines will be in more demand as our tech dystopia gets worse. You can get the demo directly on Portmaster if your handheld/firmware is supported by it. I did a few videos on summarizing these handhelds and porting your Godot games to Portmaster, if you'd like to try it out yourself.

Featured in photo from left to right:

  • Steam Deck
  • Anbernic RG34XX-SP
  • TrimUI Brick Hammer
  • BatlXP G350 (yes, ArkOS supported)
  • Anbernic RG DS

And no. No AI was used in the making of Crop and Claw 2.

Reaper MIDI latency inconsistency with external sound modules? [Linux, SC88-Pro]

Mostly going to copypaste a lot of this from my post on the forum because I've had an issue with Reaper where after having written songs and even recording them fine, I end up unable to record them again because their playback is, bluntly, just awful. No one's really even acknowledged the post so I guess I'm on the cutting edge of getting screwed. I was initially pretty patient but I'm now running up to a deadline and still cannot fix this issue no matter what preferences I change.

I'm a beginner with music and Reaper's been covering most my needs for composing for a game I'm working on. With my current workspace, I've got a SC88-Pro wired up with overpriced UMO USB MIDI cables. I'm running on Debian Linux (KDE) and the latest Reaper's version worked fine in every other capacity. When playing MIDIs through Fluidsynth for testing, especially your typical Dooms or RPG Maker MIDIs, the playback tends to come about correctly, so my cables aren't likely the issue as is common with affordable 10$ twiggy MIDI cables, and my SC88-Pro is working perfectly fine on its own. I'm not running into voice limits and in one of the most jarring issues, I've only got eight notes playing, a far cry from the hardware's 64 tone limit.

However, working with music, I've got some weird inconsistency with how playback goes in Reaper that's made it basically impossible to correctly compose and playback whatever I'm working on unless the stars align. In short, sometimes when I boot Reaper up, I notice some jarring stutters with the MIDI playback. But only sometimes. I can restart my entire system, or wake it from sleep, and there's no obvious pattern that causes it or fixes it. It feels as if it stutters a lot at a measure's end, or when playing fast notes, 16th notes, the like. I could compose an entire piece while it works fine, then open it later and the playback is all wrong. Then if Lady Luck smiles my direction, will play normally again some other day. This let me at least record one song I made correctly then record it again after it started doing this. I'd export the MIDI in Fluidsynth for correct playback, but I had problems doing so where it screwed up the channels and that's another problem I'm going to have to fix another time. Even when exported as a multi-track MIDI, it just creates a single track, one instrument file that plays at correct timing but wrong instrumentation.

Here's a song that works correctly, or at least sounds just about correct. I was able to record this on the second day of making it iirc.:

https://dinoleaf.com/pro_file_hostin...in_correct.ogg

And here's the same song, opened at a later date with no changes, when Reaper seems to be chugging, where the band's had a little too much to drink and isn't bringing their best:

https://dinoleaf.com/pro_file_hostin...tain_drunk.ogg

That ocarina octave jump isn't the only thing screwing up. You can feel that there's hitching when feeling out the tempo and notes. But the ocarina's the most obvious way to tell the issue's happening. It's not even rapidly turning on and off. They're eighth notes at 140 BPM.

Since it only seemed to happen in Reaper, and only sometimes, I can only guess there's something weirdly niche here, but I haven't the experience to narrow it down nor search the right terms to find a solution online or in forum archives. Any idea how I can forcibly get this consistent? I'd probably be composing more consistently if this wasn't an issue. I don't really have a better DAW either as all the FOSS ones have a lot of problems for what I want to do and any other paid one's relatively predatory, and Reaper's so far the only DAW that's clicking for me when it comes to composing (still wish it had built-in soundfont and sample handling though, but that's also less important since I'm just using hardware currently and want this game's OST to stick to one module for a consistent sound.)

I try to be pretty patient but this is an issue that's plagued me and is showing no signs of being worked around. I'm not particularly experienced with this type of thing but I feel like we solved the concept of MIDI latency back in the 80s, 90s, and I don't know why I'm having this issue on a relative supercomputer in the 2020s.

[USA][H] Consoles, OG XBOX, PS2 Slim, Gameboy Pocket, DK Game&Watch[W] Paypal G&S

Shipping with USPS. All are priced before shipping. Trying to clean out more space and some of the old consoles sitting around are the biggest offenders.

Gallery: https://imgbb.com/album/DfNB8z

XBOX Original - 100$

Comes with a (very short) power cable, RCA AV cables, the enormous gamepad, an XBOX-to-USB wire, and has Rocky5 firmware.

PlayStation 2 Slim - Silver - 80$

Comes with power cables, RCA AV cables, and a FreeMCBoot memory card.

I have two OEM PS2 controllers, but they're both those awful -H ones that are soldered and wear out. The input's scrambled and inconsistent. If someone wants them cheap for parts and repairing, I can probably include those for 10$ for both, but they're as-is. Otherwise, this doesn't come with controllers.

Gameboy Pocket + Case - 50$

Slightly worn from being an ancient device. Comes with a Pokemon Gold case.

Game & Watch Donkey Kong - 70$

The screen seems to be weakening, but it does work otherwise. Maybe a screen replacement can clean it up. Battery cover included. Slightly scratchy on the surface.

Dumb Portmaster gamedev asks: Are you still using ArkOS?

I'm building a dragon JRPG in Godot 4.6, a sequel to Crop and Claw (which is free on Portmaster), and there's a few things of note with this. As of 4.6, the build system for Godot was updated to use a newer Linux kernel as the minimum requirement, one which is too new for ArkOS to run out of the box. Portmaster's recently gotten a 4.6.3 runtime (shoutout to Dorito guy) and it was compiled in such a way that it won't be compatible with ArkOS. This isn't a showstopper for CnC2, as I did compile an older non-LTO build of 4.6.1 on a Pi400 with an older kernel, and it runs on my G350 with fair performance.

The question I'm fishing out here is how much ArkOS is still being used out there in the wild. It's technically considered obsolete, with dArkOS its Shadow the Edgehog successor, and other CFW like Elec and Rocknix being options. I imagine anyone who bothers going on Reddit to post about this stuff is more likely to be a power user that bothers to flash and update firmware, so this is probably going to be bias towards having left ArkOS behind, but it is something I'm curious about because Crop and Claw 2's free public demo will be releasing very soon (within weeks) to Steam, itch, and obviously Portmaster, and I'd like to support as many environments that Portmaster currently can run from, at least before ArkOS becomes so old it's officially hard-dropped and abandoned.

[USA-GA][H] Roland Sound Canvas 55/88-VL + Boutique JD-08 [W] Paypal G&S

As part of gamedev, I do music and prefer using physical modules because VSTs are screwed by being stuck on Windows/OSX or being subscription-based. A few years back I got a SC-55 and JD-08 but never really got to composing with them. Then more recently got a SC88-VL as I began experimenting more recently. Nowadays though I compose with a SC88-Pro and have settled into a comfortable workflow with it. So I may as well finally get to giving these modules new homes so they stop collecting dust and getting no love.

I don't post much here and tend to remember less of the operations of r/HardwareSwap but have done a bit in r/GameSales so as far as I know, I'm not a bot scammer.

All units work. See videos below. Open to bulk offers.

Roland SC55 (1991)

Price: $120 + shipping

It's the Doom one. **Not** a Mark-II unit. Video showcase using Adventure from RPG Maker 2003. Comes with power but you'll need your own MIDI cables and AUX or RCA cables/capture otherwise.

Video showcase:

Roland SC88-VL (1996)

Price: $200 + shipping

SC88 which adds a bunch more samples from the SC-55, including a mapper for SC-55 as well. VL version doesn't have lower button menus to control sample editing stuff and needs to be done digitally or through SysEx I believe. Video showcase using Far-East from RPG Maker 2003. Comes with power but you'll need your own MIDI cables and AUX or RCA cables/capture otherwise.

Video showcase:

Roland Boutique JD-08 (2022)

Price: $340 + shipping

The mini sound module version of the old JD-800 from a few years back. Barely used. It's a bit too advanced for me. Box has a scratch but unit is perfectly fine. Video showcase using Sad from RPG Maker 2003, but they're not really meant to run in this so it sounds a bit goofy. Clearly not using it as intended. Uses USB-C for power and interfacing, but can also use MIDI.

[USA][H] OG XBox Console [W] Paypal G&S

Original XBox... zero? I have no idea what kids call this nowadays. Comes with a single gamepad, a whatever-to-USB converter, RCA cables and a (very very short) power cord. Also comes with Splinter Cell CIB, that's right Tom Clancy himself is back to raise teenage turtles as Splinter. XBox has Rocky5 firmware installed so you can also watch your AVI downloads of AVGN episodes from Youtube on XBMC.

Asking 110$ + shipping. I would wish to gut the shipping for a whole console, but the original XBox is huge like XBox huge.

Images at https://imgbb.com/album/Sw4SdL

I've a few other things to put up but the XBox is taking the most space and I don't want to ever have temptation to play the original Blinx again, as tempting as it is.
