CG Deck Official Announcement Trailer Video | The Modular x86 Handheld PC

I have been working on building, developing, and prototyping my own modular handheld x86 PC called the CG Deck. After approximately the past 7 and a half months of going from initial concept to functional engineering prototype, I am finally able to officially present the soon coming release of what I have been working tirelessly on over the course of this year! I will also be ramping up and posting more videos of the CG Deck in use, and other related content over the coming days. If you are interested in the project, like the video, leave a comment and subscribe to the channel! I appreciate all of your support so incredibly much, and thank you to everyone that has been following along so far! It means the world to me!

For those who have not seen this project before, the CG Deck is an x86 based modular handheld PC which has the capability of running dual boot operating systems like Windows & Linux. Designed and built to be a device that you actually own down the the firmware. Quick swap out control modules to mix and match control schemes for your specific task. Design and make your own modules, design your own backplates, upgrade or mod the internals, and even make repairs or fixes when or if you need. The CG Deck is more attuned to a platform rather than a traditional device, giving you full capability to repair, upgrade, mod, personalize, etc.

I wanted to create my dream device, something that evolved with me as time passes. Whether I am playing Steam games, or doing retro emulation, doing CAD work in Blender or other 3D software, coding, art & design work, listening to music, home media console use, video editing, hardware tinkering or whatever it is, I wanted to be able to simply be able to do it on a single portable handheld.

Also as a little bit of an update, I am still working on the behind the scenes documentary going over the entire process from the original idea and conceptual drawing, through design iterations, CAD, creating the bill of materials, material sourcing, navigating partnerships with brands and manufacturers, prototyping, assembly, DFM rework, testing & certifications, planning mass production, figuring out the logistics of warehousing and fulfillment, and every step in between all the way though officially releasing and launching the CG Deck and bringing it to market! Because there is so much that has gone into everything (and I am still in the middle of the process doing it all :) ), I will probably post the videos as an episodic series with smaller pieces of content going up between. I will have more information about those videos over the coming weeks, and it will be posted on my personal channel.

After tons of work, we are officially gearing up for an official launch on Kickstarter to help support a full production run of the CG Deck and various modules to bring it to market! The CG Deck will be available both as a DIY Assembly Kit and a Pre-Built ready to use device! I will be sending out more information to everyone on our waitlist over the next couple of days with some new updates & announcements including early bird backer pricing, package/pledge options, and more!

Recommendations for GC/PS2 Emulation

What is the best option and the best value option for a handheld that can emulate PS2 and GameCube well?

Using the GameSir Pocket Taco horizontally using a 3D-printed doodad

u/Cosmic_Cavalier created a nice little 3D-printed accessory for the GameSir Pocket Taco, so I printed it on my old Ender 3 and glued some magnets to it.

It works great! I think with a few small improvements it could be a good companion to the Taco that makes it way more versatile without ruining its pocketability.

Next Step In Emulation

Well, I think I've come full circle in my emulation journey. No longer am I confined to just emulating games. I now emulate my room as a child. We in the matrix now, lmao.

But jokes aside decided to dust off my Meta Quest 3 headset and found this neat little game called Retro Game Dev Vr. It's made to teach you how to develop for old systems, but it has a built-in emulator.

I'm not sure how much i would play games like this, but it's still pretty cool.

DIY: Mcon fullsize grip with no clips

Made a custom grip that uses the fold out grips as support and a pull out middle section with dovetail for assembly. Based on the new steam controller. I am still working on dialing in the design but so far its almost perfect. Feels just as good as my full-size controllers. You can kind of see how the fold out grip slides in the recess in the body from the CAD image.

[AMA] I spent my summer building an open-source RETRO BOY COLOR. It's fully working now!

Hey everyone! This is a solo passion project I made during summer break. I designed the hardware, PCB, and it's 100% open-source.

It is based on ESP32S3N16R8 and runs RETRO GO. It supports retro games for multiple platforms. What's most important is that it perfectly integrates with the original GAME BOY COLOR casing. So I called it RETRO BOY COLOR.

It also features a high-brightness 2.8-inch ST7789 IPS display and a 1000mAh battery, with a modular design that facilitates easy repair and replacement, while keeping hardware costs low.

It's fully working now! I'm planning to launch this project (including open-source files) on Kickstarter. If you have any suggestions, feel free to ask me directly. Thanks for the support!

Is it possible to install emulators for consoles like the Switch, PS4, or something similar?

It runs on Android, so I was wondering if it might be possible to install those emulators on the E6Max?

I would be very grateful if you could let me know.

4:3 Clamshell: Which controller layout would you pick?

Hi,

After showing you a mini flip concept a few days ago, I noticed that many of you wanted Dpad and buttons on top.

I know that this is about personnal preferences, but I did sense a sort of concensus.

So I am truly wondering:

  1. Which layout is best for what?
  2. What percentage would that represent on our community?

I remember the retroid poll about the Stick/Dpad on top, but it was prematurely closed (12h) imo and didn't represent things well.

Unfortunately I can't add both an image and a poll in this post, it would be nice if the mods can add this features.

Personnally: I'll go for the 4th one.

Armbian Ubuntu Resolute on Anbernic RG-Vita Pro

It runs quite smoothly on Gnome, Plasma, and Plasma-Mobile.

This model doesn't seem to be very popular, but I think there are ways to repurpose it as a Cyberdeck.
Since it has USB-C and DisplayPort, smart glasses like Xreal will work right out of the box.

I just sent out the PR.

Device recommendation for breastfeeding wife

My wife and I are currently expecting our 2nd child and she is planning to breastfeed them when they arrive. For our first child she found that she needed something to do whilst feeding in the middle of the night to make sure she didn't fall asleep whilst feeding, but also something that wasn't too mentally strenuous.

I'm considering getting her a handheld device to play things like Pokémon on, so I would like some recommendations.

I've had a look at the mega threads, and I like the look of things like the Miyoo Mini Plus, Trimui Brick and the various Anbernic vertical consoles, but I'd like to just check them against our specific requirements:

- Comfortable to play one handed for about half an hour at a time, so size and weight should be considered.

- Will be played in the middle of the night in a dark room, so a screen that can have brightness turned way down would be preferable

Are there any handhelds that are well suited for vertical bullet hell games?

Or are the screens generally too small for games like Touhou or Mushihimesama that require carefully weaving through a hitbox that is only a few pixels wide through ribbons of projectiles in slow motion? Those games were designed to be played on home computers or on a normal sized screen at the arcade.

sd card questions (sorry if thid has been issued before

i saw some sd cards with A1,A2. V10, to V30. just wondering what are the differences? i could probably google that but i want to know directly from community what are the differences between them in terms of gaming and emulation. from retro to heavy switch or pc games. and considering the price hike of the sd card nowadays, what is enough storage by not breaking the bank

Looking for a pocketable indie machine

I have a Switch 2 and I love it, but I want to start building my collection of games on GoG that I can actually own lol, and so I’d like a pocketable device smaller than my Switch that I can carry around.

I don’t play many graphically intensive AAA games, and I’m mostly looking for something that can easily handle modern indies like Neva, Gris, Ori, Tunic, Hades etc along with some older JRPGs (FF, Trails etc).

I really like the vertical form factor of the Anbernic RG477V, but I’m not sure if it would be powerful enough? The RP Nova looks incredibly enticing, and even though I know the RP6 would probably be better for my use case in terms of screen dimensions, I’m a sucker for that clear purple Nova colour scheme haha.

I looked at the Thor but I don’t see myself playing DS games much so it doesn’t feel particularly useful to have a second screen.

Not a requirement, but the handheld being able to run a custom OS other than Android would be nice!
