Installing emulators is now stupid fast: Game Twin App Update

Hey everyone, sharing the latest update for Game Twin.

For anyone new to the app, it was built to maximize multitasking around games, specifically for multi-screen devices. Think of it like a save state for everything around your games (guides, achievements, manuals, images, YouTube links, etc.).

Here is what’s new in v0.8:

Reduce the emulator setup headache

Integrated a curated apps catalog sourced from RJNY’s great Obtainium Emulation Pack, so you can install all recommended emulators, frontends, and utilities without hunting them down across the web.

  • Direct Installs: Download and install apps directly inside the app. No external tools required unless you actually want to use them.
  • Bulk Options: Bulk download everything in one click, install them individually, or export an Obtainium import file for automatic updates.
  • Quick Setup Guide Search: Added quick search buttons for online and YouTube guides. On dual-screen devices, these open right on the second screen while configuring the emulator on the main one.

New launcher-style home screen

Added a new home screen layout specifically built for people who want a clean bottom screen layout optimized for heavy multitasking around games.

  • Smart Tracking: Automatically detects your last-played game from ES-DE, Cocoon, and RetroArch, alongside your Retro and Steam Achievements.

A few other cool features

Proper ASCII Guide Reader: Modern text readers completely break old-school GameFAQs text guides when you change the text size. The new reader preserves ASCII art formatting at any size.

Zero Storage Waste: Automatically detects existing scraped artwork and manuals already on your device, reusing them instead of duplicating files and wasting space.

It’s still in beta, but it feels a lot more polished now. It’s free, no ads and no account needed.

Let me know what you think if you give it a spin!

Best regards,

Mert

I had no idea this was even a thing in Celeste!

I was in an office call and was smashing keys on Celeste today. I didn't know that I could also play the original Pico 8 version inside the mainstream version lol 😆

Here's how to unlock it...

(Device: Anbernic RG 34XX SP)

(Game: Celeste via PortMaster port)

Does the Miyoo Mini+ still deserve to be the go to recommendation for a handheld of its class?

I recently got myself a Miyoo Mini+, in large part out of curiosity after hearing rave reviews about it. And after owning it for a few weeks I can say I do get it, at least in a vacuum. People weren't kidding when they said OnionOS is a godsend, it's super comfortable, and doesn't really sport any major flaws for PS1 and below. So I'm happy with it.

However I can't help but wonder if there aren't better devices for achieving similar things and around the same price range? The MM+ isn't that cheap, it's just about the lowest spec device still being sold, and it doesn't really feel like it actually excels at anything. For the most part it's impressive how little the specs matter, but you're still missing out on Portmaster, N64, Dreamcast, and Saturn.

To me it almost feels like it's not the greatness of the MM+ that makes it so popular, but rather it's the flaws of its competitors for that makes it still relevant for "PS1 and below".

Or what do you guys think?

brand new RG CubeXX - super slow even on 8 bit consoles, should I return it?

Hello.

I bought it from their official ebay store. Works fine, but it is very slow - I mostly play NES and TurboGrafx games and average FPS is around 15, no matter which graphics settings do I apply. I have watched youtube videos and I know it should be much more snappier. Also, when exiting game, the text "exiting" stays there for 3-4 seconds, even for NES games.

I know that I can install knulli and so on, but I'm just curious, if this is a hardware issue, I guess I should return it as is?

What is the smallest device that can do PS2 comfortably?

I am open to out-of-production devices as well. I am looking for a tiny PS2 machine. I just love the idea of having something in my pocket that can play PS2.

I know the RG-476H exists but I promise it cannot do PS2. It struggles.

EDIT: Thanks guys, purchased a brand new RP Mini V2 off AliExpress

NextUI - GBA stuttering problem

Hi, my TrimUI Brick GBA keeps stuttering and having choppy audio on NextUI. I'm using the gpSP core with the official gba_bios.bin (recognized as Original BIOS). I have already tried enabling Frameskip (Auto/Threshold), turning off all Shaders, and ensuring Dynamic Recompiler is on, but nothing helps. Turing off WiFi does not help too. Any suggestions? 🙁

Just……be careful when cleaning your handhelds

Was cleaning with IPA 99%, somehow it seeped into the top screen and after a week of drying this is what remains.

Not dreadful in gameplay at least but it is there…let it be a learning experience.

Console is new 3ds XL, game is Super Mario Bros. 2

This game was way too hard to play - Fire (Game and Watch)

Game of the Week #33, but I forgot to put it in the post title.

Fire is a 1981 action game released for the Game and Watch line of handhelds. The main gameplay loop consists of moving a pair of firefighters holding a safety net, saving people who jump out of a burning building.

I faced a lot of difficulty playing Fire this week, although the difficulty stemmed not from the game, but in trying to play it. When I first decided on Fire for this week, I already had a copy of the ROM on my SD card, so I went to ES-DE and hit play. However, the game wouldn't load at all. Thinking it might be the emulator, I switched to an alternative RetroArch emulator, Handheld Electronic which also didn't work. After some more fruitless troubleshooting, I attermpted a standalone emulator, Mame4Droid. After downloading the apk and installing the app, I opened the app, only to not find the Game and Watch system in the catalogue at all. At this point, I felt like I had tried everything, until I found a Reddit post showing off a Game and Watch emulator for the 3DS, Yokol, Laying on my bed, I found the Github link, not expecting much, but I found something amazing it was a full-fledged Game and Watch emulator, available on Android! Thinking it was a breakthrough, I installed the app, only to be hit by a pop up that I needed a .ykp file. A what? Back on my PC, I went back to the Githyb, which explained it all. Yokoi ran games off a special .ykp file type, made by running a Python script on a Mame romset, Unwilling to do all that, I searched for a premade one online, which was thankfully available on archive org, Later, I found out that archive file had been uploaded by the creator of the emulator. Having struck gold, I went back to my Odin 3. and downloaded the .ykp and ran it on Yokoi, Finally, I could play Fire.

Now, if you want to play Fire, you really don't have to do all that. If you're going to play Fire on Android, here's the link to the emulator's Github repo:

https://github.com/RetroValou/Yokoi_Game_-_Watch_emulator_3ds, and the archive.org link is easy to find if you just search up the name of the emulator online. If you're on Linux or don't want to download another app, play Game & Watch Gallery (GB) or Game & Watch Gallery 4 (GBA) Both games have Fire, just on their respective systems. I only went this far because I wanted a more authentic experience. I would also note that the Android app for Yokoi, the emulator is designed with dual-screen devices in mind, i.e., the RG DS or AYN Thor. Thus, although the emulator works on single screen devices, it's easier to use on dual-screen devices.

As for the game, it's pretty good, although a touch boring.

Device: AYN Thor

My Impressions of the Anbernic RG Rotate (Metal Version). The DAP/Handheld Hybrid I Wanted. (With Text!)

(Reposted with text)

I just got my RG Rotate (Metal version) this morning! Purchased it on AliExpress about 3 hours after orders opened. Thought I’d give my impressions, skipping all the usual stuff you can get from major reviews and trying to hit the points that were missed or ignored.

Why I Swapped the Trimui Brick Hammer

I originally bought the Trimui Brick Hammer to serve as my EDC handheld, hoping it could double as a Digital Audio Player (DAP). While the Brick’s ability to quickly pick up and play is unmatched, it was absolutely worthless as a music player. Bluetooth support is almost non-existent, USB audio lacks volume control when using NextUI, and loading files over the network was a massive pain.

When Anbernic advertised the RG Rotate, it seemed like EXACTLY what I wanted: Android-powered, a faster processor, and an even smaller form factor. I sold my Brick Hammer immediately and bought the Rotate on AliExpress on opening day.

First Impressions & Form Factor

The first thing I noticed is how nice it feels in the hands when closed. It’s incredibly easy to palm and navigate one-handed. Operating the device feels just like using a phone, so if you’re used to Android, doom scrolling feels right at home.

Out of the box, it comes with 11 GB used out of 32 GB (9 GB for the OS, 1 GB for pre-installed emulators and apps). I’m not even going to bother with an SD card; 20 GB of free space is more than enough for my core rotation of music and retro games. Android feels snappy, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth all just work—unlike on the Brick.

The Display

The display looks bright and holds up great at all viewing angles. I’ll admit the Brick's screen feels a bit sharper due to its higher DPI. The Rotate's 3.5” 1:1 screen means you get roughly the same 4:3 image size as the 3.2” Brick. On the Rotate, a 4:3 image scales to 3.1”, so screen real estate isn't actually any better unless you utilize 8:7 with overscan for NES and SNES. However, because this is a 1:1 panel, 3:4 vertical games and square-aspect systems (like Neo Geo Pocket and GB/GBC) look much bigger.

The Bluetooth Audio Situation

Let’s talk about Bluetooth audio, which is inherently laggy. If you want true low-latency wireless audio, you typically need both the Android device and the headphones to support aptX LL (Low Latency), and even then you are looking at some delay (>50ms). The RG Rotate uses Bluetooth 5.0, so there is no native aptX LL support. If you have low-latency wireless headphones and want to experiment, you could try a Bluetooth 6.0 dongle, but the resulting latency can be a roll of the dice. If you want the absolute lowest wireless latency, you’ll have to get dedicated 2.4GHz gaming headphones with their own specific USB dongle, which can bring latency down to ~15ms.

For my setup, I used a pair of TWS earbuds with a dedicated game mode: the Moondrop Space Travel 2 Ultra. In gaming mode, they advertise a 55ms latency, and honestly, I don't think you can do much better than that over standard Bluetooth.

With the ST2, audio lag goes from an unbearable ~500ms in music mode to almost imperceptible in game mode. The lag is technically still there, but it's not enough to bother me while gaming.

Wired Audio (The Zero-Latency Route)

If you want absolutely 0 latency, you need a dongle. I highly recommend the classic Apple USB-C to 3.5mm dongle. It’s cheap, accessible, and sounds excellent. If $10 is still too rich for your blood, the JCALLY JM6 (non-Pro) can be found for under $10 on AliExpress. Avoid generic, unbranded USB dongles; stick with proven brands like Apple and JCALLY. Pair one of those with a Truthear Gate or 7Hz x Crinacle Zero:2, and you have a killer budget entry into the audiophile world. The sky is the limit here—if you want to fall down that rabbit hole, check out r/iems.

No analog stick? No problem. Bluetooth controllers pair easily with no noticeable latency, and the device handles my endgame audio setup beautifully!

I hope this helps anyone who has been sitting on the fence after watching YouTube reviews and worrying about audio lag.

Pros

  • Compact: Amazingly pocketable.
  • Great Value: Excellent performance-to-price ratio.
  • Android OS: Flexible app ecosystem.
  • 1:1 Display: Perfect for vertical arcade shooters.

Cons

  • D-pad: Not my favorite (personal preference, as I lean toward softer rubber membranes).
  • L2/R2: Pretty much useless during gameplay unless you swap them out for the taller variant buttons.

My Setup

  • Handheld: Anbernic RG Rotate (Arctic Silver)
  • TWS: Moondrop Space Travel 2 Ultra
  • Dongle: Apple USB-C to 3.5mm
  • Controller: GameSir G8 Plus
  • DAC: Chord Mojo
  • IEM: Sennheiser IE800
  • GAME: 1st screen: Dragon Blaze(Arcade), 3rd screen: Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven(PS2)

Edit: Added game info.

Handheld choice

I am looking at getting something that can play up to and including PS1 and N64, has a metal casing, and can be used as a DAP either via Bluetooth or with a good 3.5 mm output. As I’ve come to the conclusion that my main choices are the TrimUI Brick Hammer or the RG Rotate, what would be your recommendations ?

Also wondering if maybe the Clockwork uConsole with a CM4 would be a good choice?

I developed this prototype for playing retro games on your phone

I’ve been working on silicone pads with built-in buttons to play classic games. The r/EmulationOnAndroid community has helped me refine and finalize the product’s design.

I’m planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign, and if you like the project, it would be a huge help if you joined the waitlist at:

https://gameonpad.com/

Today I’ve started requesting manufacturing quotes, and I hope to make this a reality and, above all, that you like it.

Thank you very much!

Can’t decide between the black or Silver RG Rotate and need some input.

I like the look of the black rotate more but the durability of the silver I assume will be better.

I know both hinges are metal but the plastic body of the black model worries me as I just sent in my Flip 2 for cracking plastic.

Anyone made a choice with similar concerns? And why did you end up choosing the one you did?

(If they had a black metal one that’d be my choice)
