Looking for a light case with just enough screen protection

I've watched tons of reviews on this and still can't really find what I'm looking for. I want a light case that preserves the slim and lightweight nature of this phone to the degree possible, but still provide a small lip around the screen to protect against drops.

I have the official Apple clear case and it's decent, but I'm wondering if there's something even thinner and lighter. Exposed buttons and camera protection would be a nice bonus, but not required. Most of the reviews I'm seeing about the thinnest cases say that there's not enough of a lip around the screen to protect it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

cron email

There are a bunch of useful built-in cron scripts like zfs and smart monitoring, for example. I can't find any way to get emails when they fail like you can with a normal command line cron implementation. Typically the mail goes to the local root account by default, and if you configure local root to forward to an external address you can get notified if something is wrong.

Now of course there is monit, but the built-in health checks are all in the Cron section. Trying to avoid writing a big custom script if anyone has any ideas.

Processing Vulkan shaders

Anyone get this no matter how many times you start a game? I've got a 9070XT. Not sure if SteamOS will download precompiled shaders for this card like it does for the Steam Deck, but even if I let it get to 100% it still prompts me the next time I start the game and spins up my CPU fans something fierce.

Need help wrangling this stuff

I carry this in my two front pockets. iPhone 14 Pro in one pocket, and the rest in the other.

The pocket with my keys, AirPods, and Mcon is crowded and makes it difficult to pull out any single item.

Are there any products or ideas out there that would help to carry all this more efficiently? Thanks.

LIST:

  • iphone 14 pro
  • airpods
  • keys
  • mcon

Gyro ratcheting with Grip Sense check-in

With previous controllers I was using gyro with flick stick, but when I heard about Grip Sense I decided to try ratcheting so that I could have my right thumb free for more inputs instead of being stuck on the right stick or trackpad.

I'm using Grip Sense on only the right side of the controller configured for hold to enable gyro. I use a very low Grip Sensor Range so that I don't have to move my hand too far to disable gyro.

To make ratcheting easier I'm using a pretty high sensitivity, with the vertical mixer reduced by about 50%. Because the sensitivity is so high I'm using a pretty high setting for Gyro Speed Deadzone and Gyro Precision Speed.

The big one I think is Enable Momentum. I don't necessary want the motion to keep going when I release the grip, but this setting must be enabled to use Vertical Momentum Friction, which I've maxed out. My understanding of this is what when I'm ratcheting, I only really want to move horizontally and not vertically so I can turn around quickly and reset my grip. Let me know if I'm not understanding this setting correctly.

For 3DOF to 2D Conversion Style I'm using Player Space, but even after using gyro for a while I still don't really understand if this is the best option for me. I do find myself having to re-center the gyro vertically after looking up or down because my hands wind up a weird position. Not sure which setting might help with this if any.

Anyways, here's some screenshots of my settings. Lemme know if you have any tips, thanks.

Can this stream from Steam Deck? Can you use the controllers as standalone without the headset?

Got a couple of questions that aren't super easy to find in the marketing materials:

  • Can I stream games from the Steam Deck to the headset? The use case would be during travel. Or is this even necessary if the built in Snapdragon hardware in the Frame is comparable to the Deck?
  • Can the controllers be used as standalone conventional non-VR controllers connected to the Deck or other Steam systems? My use case here is to have a nice set of split controllers for when gaming on a treadmill. The market for split controllers is pretty small with most of them focused on Nintendo Switch.

Want to make my system quieter

I want to my my system as quiet as possible. When it's on I can hear the low whooshing sound of the case fans, and when I run a game things start to spool up and it's annoying. I'd also like to leave the system on when I'm not gaming for some AI workloads for some rare but bursty GPU usage.

Specs:

  • Intel® Core™ i9-12900K Processor
  • GIGABYTE Z390 Gaming SLI
  • MSI GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING X TRIO 24G Graphics Card
  • be Quiet Dark Base 701 w/ 3 pre-installed Silent Wings 4 140mm
  • Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler
  • PC Power and Cooling Silencer 1050W PSU

In the current configuration I've got the case fans plugged into the Dark Base 701 fan bus controller:

>Dark Base 701 Black features a combined PWM and ARGB hub for up to 8 PWM fans and 2 additional ARGB devices. This PCB is located behind the motherboard tray and connects to the front I/O panel’s fan and ARGB controllers. The pre-installed fans are connected to the fan hub by default

Best I can tell this doesn't interface with the motherboard at all, so I can't use software to control fan curves for the case fans. Sounds like I should stop using the case fan controller and use the 4 4-pin PWM headers on my motherboard:

  • 1 x water cooling CPU fan header
  • 2 x system fan headers
  • 1 x system fan/water cooling pump header

My initial thought is to replace all the stock case fans with Noctua NF-A14 PWM fans. And from there I have to decide how many to get and where to put them. The case supports the following:

  • Top (mm)3x 140 / 3x 120
  • Front (mm)3x 140 / 3x 120
  • Rear (mm)1x 140 / 1x 120
  • Bottom (mm)1x 140 / 1x 120

Looking for suggestions, thanks.
