Hot Shots Golf. Finally!

I'm a huge fan of the Hot Shots Golf series on the PS2. The new releases just don't click for me. Like a lot of people, I've struggled with emulation on Androis for HSG 3 and Fore!. It would slow down to the point of being unplayable. There have been many posts of how changing settings can make it "playable", but not great.

We finally have a solution. I installed ARMSX2, and without changing ANY settings (I'll play around with it later", I was able to get Fore! running really well on my Odin 2 at 3x resolution. I'd say 8.5 or 9 out of 10 (couple stutters and music slowdown that doesn't take away from gameplay). Mostly 60fps, with dips.

I'm a convert. I can imagine getting it near perfect with a few tweaks. For those of you looking for a solution, this is it.

PC Gaming on Android

Am I right to say that PC gaming on Android is still in the "it may work, after a lot of tweaking, or it may not work" is a fair assessment? Using GameNative, I've tried 3 games on my Odin 2. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - was able to get to 4 FPS after 2 hours of tweaking. Prince of Persia - Sands of Time - couldn't get past the graphics falling apart in a small window. F.E.A.R. Platinum Edition - couldn't get controls working. These three games combined took about 6-8 hours of my time and were all fails. That's after going through online settings, tutorials, etc.

I bought 10 games off GoG, thinking I would have a decent library (cognizant of not going after games that were too taxing. I've been left with a frustrating hit to my bank account and (so far) no playable games.

Edit: got Arkham Asylum running 1280x720 (16:9), 60 FPS. Required no tweaking at all (besides selecting "use known config")

Odin 2 vs Odin 3 Analog Sticks

Thought this would be interested to compare. I have an Odin 2, waiting for the 3. The controls are vastly different and (presumably) has a big impact on the experience.

PS3 Emulation on Odin 3?

Has anyone had good results? My goal is to get NHL 14 up and running, understanding that it is one of the more demanding titles. From what I'm trackkng, the processor/GPU is more than capable, the limitation is in the emulation

Build quality comparison

So I recently purchased an Anbernic RG476H for d-pad centric retro. The R1 button had an annoying rattle so I exchanged it. The replacement has a great L1 button, however the L1 has an annoying rattle, and the R2 trigger rubs.

It’s frustrating enough that I’m considering looking elsewhere. The RG476H is otherwise a fine device, if not for the issues.

The Retroid Nova is an obvious option. In your experience, how does the overall build quality of Retroid compare to Anbernic?

Storage: Internal vs. MicroSD

For those of you with higher-end SBCs, like the Retro Pocket 6 or Odin 3, do you mainly use your internal storage for ROMs and texture packs? Or a MicroSD. And why?

Texture packs, RAM ceiling?

From what I understand, the limiting factor for high-resolution textures is GPU VRAM, not system RAM.

Does this mean that the Odin 2/3 with 8GB RAM can maximize texture pack usage on the PS2 and GameCube?

Odin 3 Portal...?

Has there been any chatter (industry insider, press releases, etc.) discussing the next model in the Odin line? There was the 6" Odin, then 6" Odin 2, then 7" Odin 2 Portal, and finally the 6" Odin 3. Do we know if they will make an Odin 3 Portal, and if so, will it likely be 7"

I prefer the form factor of a 6" over a 7". If the next console is a 7", I'll pull the trigger right away on the 3. But if they either make a 6" Portal, or just jump to a 6" Odin 4, I may just wait.

Retroid Pocket Nova Colorway

I'm primarily a home user, so portability is not a concern with me. My preference is ergonomics, so I'll always buy a grip. Went with the black grip and leveraged chatgpt to provide some mockups of different color novas in the case. After many permutations, I landed on the black system with crystal buttons.

I think it's banging. Buttons pop, and the black console blends seamlessly with the grip.

Thoughts?

Retroid Pocket Nova Colors... quality?

I have never owned a Retroid console. Actually, I've never had one in my hands. When it comes to the difference between solid and transparent colour's on systems I have tried (i.e. Miyoo Mini Plus), I noticed a difference in the materials. For the Miyoo, I liked the feel of the transparent plastic better

When it comes to Retroid, is there a difference in feel or quality of the solid vs transparent cases? I like both the crystal and the black, and I wouldn't let 5 bucks be the deciding factor.

Help me decide on my end-game 4:3 console

Ok, so I'm looking for my endgame 4:3 retro device. I technically have one (RG476H), however I just got it so I'm still in the return window. I'll try to put up some unbiased comparison points, discussing things that are important to me.

A. Retroid Nova

B. Anbernic RG476H

  1. Screen

I actually see this as somewhat of a draw. OLED is obviously king (for a number of reasons), however the 476 panel is incredible for an LCD and also 120hz. How it gets into draw territory is it's size. At 4.7 inches, it has 9.1% more real-estate than the Retroid. I'm torn, however I could see me preferring the deep blacks to the bigger viewing area, but I can't say for sure. I love the size of a 4.7" panel.

Edit: I really like the all-glass panel of the 476, however it wouldn't bother me at all to lose that. I would, however, like to see the screen of the Nova be glass, so I can wipe it off without having to worry about scratching it, or using a screen protector to shield plastic. Does anyone know if the Nova screen has a plastic laminate that requires a screen protector?

  1. Power

Clearly the Retroid is more powerful. I'm wondering how much of a plus this is for my use case. On the one hand, the 476 has been able to play a number of GameCube games at 2x resolution (ideal for the screen) and 60fps. I actually got it for PS1 and below. On the other hand, I'm already poking into PS2, GameCube, and Dreamcast territory. I'm definitely pushing it, so while more power is not crucial, it certainly wouldn't be scoffed at.

  1. Form factor

They are both pretty much the same, with the exception of the optional ergonomic back for the Retroid, which puts it ahead (not sure close the tpu case for the 476 gets it). However, the overall feel comes down to...

  1. Buttons

This is where I'm in a bit of a knowledge blackout. I have never used a Retroid device, so I don't know what the face buttons and sticks feel like. I know I don't like clicky buttons, however from what I hear, the Nova buttons will be similar to the Pocket 6, so clicky (read: wife annoying) should not be a problem. From what I can gather, the dpad on the 476 will be taller, providing more travel (my preference...? Haven't tried the Retroid dpad). Where the 476 seemily wins is the sticks, which internally have more travel than the short-throw Retroid sticks, closer resembling that of a controller.

  1. Price

The difference here is not enough to sway me as I'm not looking to hold onto techdweeb numbers of consoles. Just a nice one and a beater (like the cubexx or miyoo mini).

  1. Other

I'm sure there are things I'm missing. Hopefully you guys will weigh in with other considerations (I.e. GammaOS for the 476 is sweet. I have no idea what os options there are for the Nova). User experience is key for me, which is why I prefer the 476H to the 476M.

Let me know what you guys recommend!

RG476H Grip

I wish there was an official grip for this from Anbernic, as the 3D printed ones on Etsy are usually pretty rough.

That said, of the options available, which do you guys recommend?

Cleaner wake-up on Android Devices?

Just got a RG476H and installed Gamma OS. I turned the screen lock off, so when I wake it from sleep it goes directly into Daijisho, working like a console. However, it has the Andriod overlay on the top (time, wifi, battery, etc.), showing up on top of the Daijisho headers (Libary, Category, Apps, Settings, it's own battery display, etc.). I have to hit the menu button twice (once back to the Android system, and again to get back to Daijisho) to get rid of the extra layer of info. Is there a way to set it so that this doesn't happen?

Retro Spare Parts

For console longevity/piece of mind/etc., do you normally have spare parts on hand for your portables? I'm thinking mainly batteries, and button membranes aa they wear over time. I'm stuck between buying a 2nd, cheaper device and buying spare membranes for my main device. I don't want to avoid playing as to not wear out buttons. Thoughts?

Android Emulator for Arcade Games

Hey guys! I'm just learning about emulators for the various home consoles. It seems like most systems have one or two emulators that people gravitate to. When it comes to arcade ROMs, is there a preference, or a "one-size-fits-all" solution?

GammaOS and Daijisho/RetroArch

About to receive my first retro handheld (RG476h) and have landed on installing GammaOS with Daijisho as the primary launcher. From Gamma's GitHub page, it states:

  • RetroArch pre-configured for core 8/16/32-bit systems (e.g. GB, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES, Genesis, PSX; BIOS not included)

So it sounds like I'd be ready to rock on those systems. If I wanted to run Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2, etc., what would you suggest that integrates with the setup above?

Thanks!

Gamma OS vs. ES-DE

So, the fact that I don't know if my question even makes sense means that I def need help with this one.

Just getting into Android reteo devices (my RG476H is literally on the way).

From what I'm tracking, when getting a new android console, best(?) practice is to:

- update the system firmware
- remove all the "crappy" emulators that come with it and install new ones. Like Retroarch

- install a launcher(?) like ES-DE.

Is it right to assume that GammaOS would replace whatever OS comes with the device, and then you install ES-DE on top of that? I'm sure once I run through my first setup of an android console it will make sense, just wondering where I need to / should start.

Thanks!

RG476H Joystick Placement

I don't have the device yet (looks amazing). Just wondering about placement of the sticks... I plan on mainly playing dpad games (what this system is ideal for). Do you find the sticks get in the way? If so, is there a stick delete that works? I'll practically never need them.
