My partner and I are seriously considering moving from the UK to the Netherlands, and I’m trying to get a realistic sense of what we’re getting into and what the best route is.
A bit about us:
I’m a UK citizen working in administration / office admin type roles My partner is Belgian and works in IT support with some programming experience, no children & we’re currently based in the UK.
We’re planning the move to be closer to his family, because when we eventually start our own family we want to have a proper support system and community around us rather than being isolated.
What I’m trying to understand:
Visa / residency route Since my partner is Belgian (EU citizen), I assume he can move freely. What does that mean for me as a UK citizen post-Brexit? Is it typically via partner registration, family reunification, or something else?
Jobs / employability How realistic is it for me to find admin/office work as an English speaker (with limited Dutch initially)? For my partner: is IT support / junior programming still in demand there, or is competition tough?
Cost of living vs salaries Is it actually livable on admin + IT support salaries there? Any surprises people didn’t expect after moving?
General reality check Anything you wish you knew before moving? Any mistakes to avoid early on?
We’re still in early planning stages, so I’m just trying to figure out whether this is a realistic move or if we’re underestimating anything.
