I want to play toplane

I have played every lane at some point, but never "mastered" a lane. I have been playing since xin Zhao came out, I peaked at emerald 2, but I want to take a step back to normals for the next few months and really learn top lane. It seems every champ I have tried to play, I get absolutely destroyed by champs I have heard are easy to counter ie: Nasus. :freeze wave. Garen : small trades. Darius :small trades illaoi :if she ults, bounce and dont fight till after. Ect.

If you could recommend me a champ or two to kind of OTP to really learn the mechanics of top? I dont care about doing bad for 20-30 games to learn a champ as ill be playing norms and thats the point of norms.

I seem to be struggling alot in the mid to late game *even with a lead*

As the title states, struggling to find what I need to be doing mid to late game, other than ward and look for hook angle/stuns in team fights. I do hover gold/plat so I wouldn't be surprised it if it's a 100% me issue.

Don't want to post my op.gg because I do have a lot of bad games that I know are my fault, and don't need people telling me to stop playing.

Looking for help in picking carries to main.

Who would ya'll say is some of the better champs to "Main" in the current meta.

Smolder is sitting at a 60% ban rate in my game lobbies in mid/high plat. So I mostly play Jhin and jinx

My goal is to try and get high emerald.

I dont like ezreals playstyle so please dont recommend him! TIA!!
