Rome has its own Pompeii and tourists miss it

Just outside of Rome there is a whole different Rome that most visitors do not get to see, and this place is Ostia Antica, an old Roman port city with streets, apartments, taverns, baths, temples and mosaics.

You can still see the houses where people used to live, the taverns where workers had their meals, the warehouses where merchants kept their goods, the baths where people would meet and talk and the streets where carts used to drive on the stones.

You can even go inside a bar and see the counter where they used to serve food.

I highly recommend to visit Ostia Antica if you would like to experience something unique nearby Rome.

You are the r/ItalyTravelAdvice. Question for all the community

As r/ItalyTravelAdvice continues to grow, I’d really like this community to feel built with you, not just for you 🇮🇹

So I wanted to ask:

What direction would you like to see this subreddit go in over the next months?

What kind of posts, resources, discussions, or features would make this community genuinely valuable for you?

Some ideas:

• More hidden gems & underrated places

• Better train/logistics advice

• Food & restaurant recommendations

• Scam/tourist trap alerts

• Itinerary feedback threads

• AMA’s with locals or expats

• Meetups in Italy

• Verified local recommendations

• Weekly themed discussions

But I’d honestly love to hear your ideas too.

What would make you want to participate here more often instead of just reading posts?

YOU ARE THE COMMUNITY 🫶

Rome's interactive map of bars with prices

Hey everyone,

Because of the increasing drink prices, I created an application where users can filter by prices, drink types and see the menu as well.

All of this data is crowd sourced from students. And continuing to update the prices. As of now there are close to 50+ bars to choose from. Most of the data is accurate because this is verified by students that they usually visit.

You can check out the app at https://seeker.social

NO ADS

App available on both Android and iOS https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.seekersocial.app or https://apps.apple.com/it/app/seeker-bar-e-locali-economici/id6749886146

This app was created for entertainment purposes based on the data uploaded by users

Note: adding about 80 more bars in the next few days

Richiesta saldo rate chiusura contratto Fastweb per “KO tecnico”

Salve a tutti.

Travel in Italy is expensive or not?

Hi all!

I know that somebody will immediately say that it depends on whether you decide to stay in a five-star hotel or a hostel (we all know that…), but what I mean is if overall you find Italy a very expensive country to travel to, or not.

Thanks

SCAM ALERT - Colosseum, Rome 🇮🇹

If someone approaches around the Colosseum (and other touristic areas) giving you a bracelet as a gift, is not their intention, as straight after you receive their “gift” they will just ask you money and will take back their “gift” if you don’t give them what they want. They are usually African male.

When you get approched by them, simply reject and walk away.

Probably some of you were already aware about this scam, but I care and I think is important to inform also people that never experienced this back home.

Italy is overall a safe place, but these experiences can ruin your mood during the vacation.

Why is Rick Steves so influential for travel suggestions about Italy?

I’m Italian and I didn’t know him. I have just heard that from an American couple…what is so special about him?

Is there a way to solve overtourism?

Sometimes I feel like travel is going to be way less enjoyable for the next generation.

Popular destinations are getting ridiculously expensive, while the cheaper places are becoming so overcrowded that the experience just isn’t the same anymore. Everywhere you look, countries are increasing visa fees, adding tourist taxes, or charging foreigners more.

And honestly, every time I discover a beautiful place, part of me hopes mass tourism won’t find it… while also realizing I’m part of the same problem.

It feels like travel is slowly turning into either a luxury for the rich or a constant battle against crowds.

Do you think there’s actually a way to fix this, or is this just the future of travel now?

I have been living in Rome for a while now. One of the best things about Rome is how many great day trips you can take within one to two hours, or within about one hundred kilometers of the city. There are also a lot of places that go beyond the usual tourist spots people visit when they come to Rome.

• Civita di Bagnoregio. A hilltop village known as the “dying town.” Very touristy now, but still worth seeing at least once.

• Giardino di Ninfa. Probably the most romantic garden in Italy. It really feels like something out of a fantasy movie.

• Bomarzo. A monster park full of giant stone creatures and surreal sculptures.

• Isola del Liri. A town with a waterfall right in the historic center, which is quite unique in Italy.

• Calcata. A village built on volcanic rock with a very alternative, artsy vibe.

• Castello di Santa Severa. A castle literally on the beach.

• Sperlonga. A whitewashed seaside town that feels more like Greece than Lazio.

• Ostia Antica. Ancient Roman ruins that are far less crowded than Pompeii but still extremely impressive.

• Sabaudia. Long beaches, sand dunes, and a very wild coastal landscape.

• San Felice Circeo and Circeo National Park. Beaches, forests, hiking trails, and Roman ruins all in one area.

• Anzio. A seaside town with history, good food, and easy access from Rome.

• Lago di Bracciano. A volcanic lake surrounded by small towns and castles.

• Lago del Turano. Very peaceful and quiet, ideal for a slow day.

• Lago di Nemi. A small lake in the Castelli Romani area, known for strawberries and forest views.

• Tivoli. Home to Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

• Frascati. A wine town in the hills, perfect for a quick escape.

• Grottaferrata. A calm town with an old abbey, part of the Castelli Romani area.

• Ariccia. Famous for porchetta and beautiful historic architecture.

• Castel Gandolfo. The Pope’s summer residence overlooking Lake Albano.

• Parco dei Castelli Romani. Forests, volcanic lakes, hiking trails, and small towns all connected.

• Parco dei Monti Lucretili. A wilder natural park, great for hiking without crowds.

• Parco dei Simbruini. Mountains, forests, and cooler air, especially in summer.

• Cascate di Monte Gelato. Small waterfalls surrounded by nature.

• Farfa Abbey and Borgo di Farfa. A peaceful medieval village built around an abbey.

• Canale Monterano. An abandoned ghost town that feels almost cinematic and has been used in films like Ben-Hur.

I think Lazio is honestly underrated compared to Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast. There’s a mix of villages, lakes, mountains, beaches, castles, and hidden places all very close to Rome.

I’m curious to know what everyone’s favorite day trip from Rome is, because most visitors barely leave the city and miss all of this.

Noli: a real hidden gem in Liguria 🇮🇹

I just found out about Noli in Liguria and I am really surprised more people don't talk about it.

It's a medieval seaside town on the Ligurian coast. Noli used to be a maritime republic a time ago. It was apparently the one after Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi. The town is tiny. It has a lot of towers, old churches, narrow alleys and castle ruins looking out to the sea.

What surprised me most is that Noli still feels pretty real compared to famous Ligurian spots. You can see houses, a beautiful bay views of Bergeggi island and its not as crowded as places like Cinque Terre in peak season. Noli has a lot of character.

Some highlights that looked worth checking out:

• the Church of San Paragorio one of the Romanesque churches in Liguria

• Castello di Monte Ursino with great views over the coast

• the Sentiero del Pellegrino hike toward Varigotti, which has amazing sea views

• boat trips around Bergeggi island and its marine reserve

The food in Noli is really good. They have a lot of seafood, Ligurian focaccia, trofie al pesto, fried "cicciarelli" which are tiny local fish and local white wine, like Lumassina. Nolis food is definitely worth trying.

If you’re in Rome until May 17th, you’ll have a chance to watch some exciting games from the international ATP 1000 tennis tournament. I thought I’d share this with all the tennis fans out there. 🎾

Some of the best free beaches in Italy

I was reading an article from Corriere and The Guardian about some of the best spiagge libere (free beaches) in Italy. It really made me think about how hard it is to find these kinds of places now.

So much of Italys coastline is taken over by beach clubs and rows of umbrellas and you have to pay to get in.. There are still some areas where you can just go with a towel and enjoy the sea without spending a lot of money like 40 euros a day.

The article talked about some spots, including:

• Riviera del Conero

This is probably one of the most underrated coastal areas in Italy. It has cliffs and really blue water and there are little hidden beaches surrounded by pine trees. Portonovo looks amazing.

• Gargano

This place is not as crowded as some areas, like Amalfi or Salento. It has cliffs and wild beaches and the water is really clear. There are fishing platforms everywhere and it looks like a place where you might stay longer than you planned.

• Ponza

This is a summer island for people from Rome. It has a port and rocky coves and there are boats everywhere. The water is really beautiful it does not even look real.

• Pantelleria

This place is really different from the rest of Italy. It is more volcanic and rugged. It does not really feel like a beach place.. It is really unique with natural pools and lava rocks and hot springs.

• Elba Island

This island is more beautiful than people think. It has coves and really clear water and there are hiking trails that go down to beaches that are hard to reach by car.

• Maremma

This one was a surprise, to me. There are no beach clubs or glamorous people, just dunes and pine forests and long natural beaches. It feels really local.

I think these are the places that're worth visiting now before they get too crowded.
