Wanting to minor in 2d in college, is it worth making a portfolio? Is that a thing

I’ll be a high school senior next year and while I have an idea for what field I wanna go in to I would love to minor in something like studio or 2d. I am completely self taught and have drawn causally off and on since middle school. Looking at my skill level and being super honest is it worth putting together a small portfolio, I mostly do art for online friends so all of it is more “unprofessional” I feel. Is a small portfolio worth it at my skill level or just signing up for classes and scrapping the minor idea ? Would love some honest advice! (Or maybe ideas of what to work on for the portfolio if the answer is yes)

Guys how do I make this not stuff or bootyy

(* not Stiff )Not rendered at all yet but idk how to make it less stiff, also every reference I look up has the sharpest jawline of all time so idk how to do the side profile of a 15 yo . How do I make just the clothing and head more relaxed. And also give any form of expression in the eyes from the side , the only thing I think is decent is the hair outline but idk help‼️

Rendering

This feels so unfinished but I have no idea how to more render the lily pads, water ect

I guess my main thing would be adding more depth to the water and helping to make the Lilly pads seem more 3d/lush, I’ll add this to the main text
I’m happy with the simple style since this is supposed to be just a fast piece for a friend but I’m not happy with the over all dimension of the piece ig.

Lighting

I’m participating in art fight and trying to do a nice dramatic lighting so that the subject is like shrouded in darkness with dramatic l light comming off him from the glowing part. But I cant find any good tutorials and have no idea how to keep the colors of the character visible and the background is supposed to be like space but it’s so dark so the character doesn’t stand out from the background when I try lighting/shading it . I’m so lost and would love any tips . The lighting on the Orb is just like a shitty blur effect from procreate like the whole thing is out of my league. I need .

Tips on finding what medium to use

I saw this painting in a shop with by brother, and although too expensive I wanted to make him something in a similar style for his birthday. I’m not used to painting/traditional art so have no idea what materials to use for the background, houses ect. And what canvas to buy or if I need to prime it ! Any tips would help thanks ! (

Art is NOT mine but there is a small watermark in the photo)

(I cannot find a subreddit for the life of me that I can post this where it technically doesn’t break a rule so please any suggestions)

Tips for learning key vocabulary

Just curious, I have no trouble researching and learning different grammar rules for the language, but when it comes to applying it I don’t actually know any words. Is there any app recommendations or sites that are helpful for building a vocabulary?
